Does anyone know of a source for this? I would like to try a couple of sling design ideas I have using it, but need longer than what the slings are.
I also have a couple of other uses for it.
Thanks.

Try searching the forum.  This was discussed several years ago and someone had a good supplier.  Fall back is search for 1 1/4" cotton webbing and sift through them until you find the specs you need.
Last evening, it occurred to me that when a defender of Liberty is called home, their load lands upon the shoulders of the defenders left behind. Just as the Founders did their duty for Liberty, every subsequent generation must continue their work lest Liberty perish. I remembered that there was a thread and had searched for it to no avail.  At your suggestion,  I have it another go and was able to find the thread.  Looked at one of the suppliers and they had what appeared to be it. I ordered 10 yards, and it in fact is the stuff. Color is correct and all.
The place is Seattle Fabrics. It is called WC1.25-Olive 1-1/4" Cotton Belt Webbing.
Thanks

Burnett

OK, it turns out that it is NOT quite the same. It is a couple of hundredths of an inch thinner than the GI sling.
I will have to see if the keeper will hold on it.

Charles McKinley

If not put a piece of duct tape inside the keeper on the flat part.  Have used the s to tighten up a few worn keepers.

Can you post a link to the old thread?

Thanks

Well, now I cannot find it again. I am starting to think that I might be misrembering and maybe found Seattle Fabrics somewhere else.
How old are you supposed to be when your memory starts slipping?
I don't know; the source of the webbing I bought is Seattle Fabrics. A number of other places have metal hardware. Now I just need to figure out how to treat the ends of a cotton sling without having metal tips. Maybe a small amount of ShoeGoo.
My first sling is just going to be a blatent copy of the Magpul Rifleman Loop Sling; even going to use the plastic hardware from a disassembled donor sling.

Fold the end over and sew a zigzag pattern across to prevent it from fraying further, or put some hot glue on the end covering some of the webbing and trim with a razor.

If you uses a "whip stitch" or " over cast stitch" on the end you will keep it from fraying and still be able to get the web through the hardware.  Do not fold the webbing over just sew the end.

LOL. I am familiar with a whip stitch. I had surgery on my trigger finger knuckle once and it was whip stitched closed. I did not know that they used whip stitches on people.
Super Glue or hot glue might work. I think they would be brittle and break up a lot and need to be redone. I THINK you can thin Shoe Goo out with denatured alcohol and get it to soak in more. And it stays rubbery. Need to do some research/experimenting.

there is a product called The Welder that is almost identical to Shoe Goo, just thinner.  I have gotten it at Wally World before.  I have used it a lot on shoes since the late 90's and prefer it to Shoe Goo most of the time.  I am almost certain that alcohol isn't the right solvent.  I think it is Toluene (at least that is what is used in The Welder and they smell the same).

OK. I'll look for that. Is that the normal toluene or the kind with three nitros before it?  **)

I think so.  The last tube I got looked like this.

Same company, so perhaps it's the same product.

If I see any TNT this weekend, I'll holler at you.

I have used JB Weld to coat the ends of a sling that has lost it's metal end. Still working years later.
The American Constitution is remarkable for its simplicity; but can only suffice a people habitually correct in their actions, and would be utterly inadequate to the wants of a different nation.  Change the domestic habits of the Americans, their religious devotion, and their high respect for morality, and it will not be necessary to change a single letter in the Constitution in order to vary the whole form of their government. - Francis Grund 1837

I FINALLY got around to making the sling up. Although I have not shot with it, initial impressions are good. Works just like the Magpul one but does not slip like the nylon.
For now, the end is treated with super glue. The MP slider/keeper/whatever is TIGHT on the cotton material and I'm not sure if one could jam an end treated with something else through. The super glue was difficult enough, something thicker might be a No-Go.  I'm pretty sure that I'm going to have to trim the excess and so may try something else when I do.

Charles McKinley

Glad it worked out.  I didn't think anything thicker would work.  Just sewing it will keep it from fraying. :pics:

Which Magpul sling did you duplicate?

I replicated the Magpul Rifleman Loop Sling. The cotton sling material is almost exactly the same thickness as the nylon from Magpul. VERY tiny bit thinner but appears to be close enough.
I'll see about a pic.

Burnett

First, let me apologize for the quality of the pics. WOW! Really, really bad. Rifle is laying on a baby blue piece of cloth; or as I like to call it, Infantry Blue, and the sling is actually the same OD green as the slings from the Appleseed store.

Charles McKinley

Thank you,

So to use it you set the over all length at the back?  The front glide sets your loop sling length and you tighten it with your keeper?

So have you found the sweet spot where it is set for prone and standing without having the adjust, just put your arm in the loop and cinch the keeper?

Thanks again

Yeah. I guess. As I haven't shot with it yet, I think so.
I have found a rough setting for the front, loop sling part, and a rough setting for the rear, hasty sling part. I will need to tweak it when the time comes, but it seems to work for both. My order of operations for the lengths was the front part first and then the rear.
Until I can actually shoot with it, right now the downside I see with it is that it is in no way quick to attach or detach from a rifle, and you kind of accomplish attachment in a "let's see, this goes this way and, this, no this goes this way first and..." process.

Oh, and that's all IF I have it set up the way Magpul designed it. I might not. I do think it'll work as is though.

edit: and the idea of the last pic was to show how janky I managed to get the end trying to treat it with super glue.

try something with longer dry time.  I love The Welder (it's like Shoe Goo, but much thinner).

What I have on hand right now is JB Weld and that can be thinned (I don't know if it is supposed to be, but...) so I'll give that a try first. Thinking thinning it out enough that it'll soak in and when it is not liquid anymore but not set up, squish it down flat.
We'll see. If it doesn't work, there is quite a bit extra.
