Sling. How to handle Prone to Seated to Standing.

I've taken appleseed twice, and the last time, scored 205 on the last qual.

I ran it at my own range, and scored 225.  So we're improving.

One thing I'm having trouble  with is transitioning the sling between prone, and seated / standing.  Ideally, I should go to sitting from prone, remove the sling, lengthen it, and then shoot the seated course of fire.  For me, this takes minutes, which means I rush the shots and fail.

What is the most productive way to handle the sling between prone and sitting and standing?  And what do you use to mark your sling to know where the best positions are for each shooting position?

Charles McKinley

There should be adequate time to make the sling adjustments in the prep period.  I don't change my sling length between seated and prone.  I run the keeper on the web sling with the pointed side and tb of the sling on the outside so I can easily grab the tail of the sling and pop the keeper and tighten the sling if needed.

If you are talking about a "4 minute AQT" I suggest shooting standing with the loop sling and just transition to seated then prone.
Last evening, it occurred to me that when a defender of Liberty is called home, their load lands upon the shoulders of the defenders left behind. Just as the Founders did their duty for Liberty, every subsequent generation must continue their work lest Liberty perish. As there is no way for the remaining adults to take on the work of those that die, we must pass the ideals and duties on to the children. -PHenery

We don't do the 4-minute AQT here, but for marking my sling, I only buy green or tan slings, I mark a fixed point on one side of the sling, and then 3 marks for Standing, seated, and prone on the other side of the loop.

Everyone's body and equipment are different, so there may not be one perfect solution. You may consider finding a compromise length that works "good enough" in all positions. I've tried that on several rifles and always been able to find a spot that works. To me getting the sling adjusted perfectly for each stage was an extra distraction/concern I'd rather do without.

I use one length for all stages. I keep the sling on my arm between stages, and just fasten the swivel to the stud during prep.
This weekend I tried the Magpul RLS for the first time. It seemed to work well, and has the potential to be my new favorite sling.

I usually ( not always) use two slings. One adjusted for hasty in standing and the other adjusted for loop in seated and prone. I swap them out as needed. If I am shooting my 10/22 with a 6 position stock, I also shorten up my stock by 1 notch when in seated.
I don't always shoot AQT's, but when I do, I prefer iron sights.

After doing my first Rapidfire AQT, I set my sling up in loop for prone and use it that way for all stages. I move my hand back on the hand guard to tension. It's worked well for me.

We want people to use the sling, so we teach use of the sling; but truth be told once you get the hang of it it's not that difficult to clear stage 1 without a sling (hits count scoring, anyway.)

Emmett,
When I first started shooting with Appleseed I found marking my OD Green sling with a black sharpie to be very helpful. See my pictures below. Use the metal tab as your pattern to trace a curve on the sling at those places on the sling for standing, sitting and prone. I marked the sling ST for standing, S for sitting and P for prone. I made those marks on the outside of the sling where the clamped-on metal tab was when the sling was adjusted properly. Once marked it was easy during prep to loosen the cam lock, slip the tab from ST to S, tighten the cam lock back down, and get my arm into the loop.
Understand that from day to day you may need to make adjustments based on what kind of clothes you're wearing or if you've lost/gained weight.

Anyway, that's what I did to mark a sling.

Someday if you do get into a rapid fire AQT (big fun by the way) 509gman is spot on with using the prone loop sling for all positions.

Keep practicing and never give up.

I have found that athletic tape works very well, and mark at the "forearm ring" to account for clothing differences. The tape can be removed and replaced as needed.

What Gus said.... my daughter (DeadAnt) and I both marked our slings with sharpie once we found the lengths that worked.  Then with more practice, we found we didn't need the markings.

Another idea I saw at a shoot a while back: the shoot boss had marked a loaner rifle sling with marks every inch (labeled) so that different shooters could just note what lengths worked for them.

1. Mark sling with positions. Silver Sharpies exist for black slings. Normal sharpies work for green and tan. If you're running the leather sling, you should be enough of a hero to remember your frog positions already.
2. Set sling during prep times, or after a string if you have time for the next string.
3. In 4 min rapid fire AQT, use the prone setting as it will work for 3/5 of your shots.

I just use prone for all shooting in an AQT.  I tighten it up some for standing, if I think about it.  I'm fat enough that one setting generally covers all positions.

I use the loop sling for prone and seated and hasty for standing (I have used the loop sling for standing several times, but don't like it).  I also am lucky that I never have to adjust sling length between positions.  I do sometimes have to adjust it depending on clothing, but my keeper pretty much stays in the same position (you can tell by the rust).
