I ordered a cheap optic for my rifle, and I've been blown away by how it performed. You can get it on Optics Planet for about $60. It held zero during a 2-day Appleseed in hot weather. The lenses were coated, so even with the sun shining on me the glare was a mild nuisance in the corner instead of an obstruction. The stock mounts can attach to a 10/22 factory mounting rail. The HOB is low enough that you don't need a cheek riser. It also has a handy parallax adjustment in yards (25m is about halfway between 25 and 30 yds). I shot three passing AQTs this Sunday (at my last Appleseed my highest score was around 130). I would highly recommend this one as an option for anyone considering a low cost optic for a .22.

Hey CT

Here is my BSA Sweet 22 story. I agree. Highly recommended.

1022 BSA Sweet 22. 22-39 x 40AO. WX2 - 0178951 Bought 7/31/11 from Sportsman's guide for 46.45 plus shipping.
BSA is now a part of GAMO.

I used this for 2014 and 2015  Appleseed shoots.  My next door neighbor purchased last July, 2015 and had equally good fortune.

Mounted on 1022 Target. Impressive.

What country is it made in? As good as it sounds and I'd like to get another inexpensive scope, I boycott Communist China.

Hi FB

This is trying to be a state secret.

Nowhere to be found.
After examining the scope eyepiece stamp "Made in China."

Even though a great scope I hear you and do my best to boycott the CCP.
I know more now than I did in 2011.

Can you recommend a similar optic made in America?

The main benefit for me with the BSA Sweet 22 is that it is parallax adjustable.   There are not many sub $100 scope that have this feature.   This feature immediately increased my AQT scores by 10 points and now allows me to shoot repeatedly in the 240s.

And there's the rub. The only US-made scope of reasonable price is the Leupold and their cheapest parallax-adjustable scope lists at $500. Other good optics makers are based in Japan, Taiwan, and the Phillippines. Everything from Vortex is made in Commie China.

Nikon's lower-end scopes were made in the Phillippines and very good, but for stupid reasons they got out of the riflescope business.

I regularly search on fleabay and the classified section of Rimfire Central for vintage scopes of good quality. But then you're gambling on condition.

Not quite. The lower-cost scopes from Vortex (like every other manufacturer) are made in China. However, their higher-quality models are made elsewhere. The Viper line is made in the Philippines, and the Razor line is made either in Japan or the U.S., depending on the model.

With the amount of talent and abilities we collectively have at Appleseed, I wonder if it'd be possible to eventually start tooling up our own gear. Tailor designed for the marksmanship needs of our events. Made in the USA. I can see it now:

  • Appleseed 10/22 with long length of pull, front and rear sling mounts, m1 sling, smooth trigger, optimal iron sights, and quick detach scope mount
  • Appleseed low HOB optic with known MOA width reticule for range finding, 1/4 MOA adjustment, and parallax focus
  • Appleseed shooting jacket
  • Appleseed shooting pants with kneepad inserts, and toolbelt hip pockets for magazine or chamber flag retention

That's been discussed many times. My view is that we teach practical, real-world marksmanship skills as they are used in real life. Making it too artificial with specialized gear, as if it were NRA Smallbore, undermines that principle.

A very fair point

There are several American made rifle that fit your requirements.  The clothing and optics are available as well.  The catch is they cost $$$ for American production.  If you want people paid fair wages, environmental concerns considered and the liability issues for manufacturing in the USA you will have to be willing to pay for all those things.  There is rumblings from some of the optics companies about starting US assembly of their scopes.  Time will tell.

Just as the Founders did their duty for Liberty, every subsequent generation must continue their work lest Liberty perish. As there is no way for the remaining adults to take on the work of those that die, we must pass the ideals and duties on to the children. -PHenery
