Hi guys, when I did some H.P. matches I was told my G.I. sling was OK but I REALLY needed a leather one. so I bought one and have no idea how it's supposed to work. I went to my 1st appleseed even and they said the G.I. sling is fine. what is the consensus out there??

Thx

Super Trooper

I have both and overall I prefer the web sling.  I tried the leather in several different configurations and the Dan Gray no pulse setup was slightly better for sitting, but I liked the web for prone and it's easier to attach and adjust for standing.
The hardest distance to shoot is the six inches between your ears.  It gets easier when you get out of your own way.  Self doubt and negative self talk have no place on the firing line.
Once a shot is gone... good or bad, it is gone.   Focus on the next one. Make forty good first shots.

Konrad Powers is one of the most successful high power shooters in the country and he only uses a cotton G.I. sling. You can check out his website here.

By the way, NRA and CMP highpower shoot a course of fire nearly the same as our AQT.

I like the M1907 sling the best. Easy to get out of works great with a shooting jacket, and is easy to use the same set of holes for consistency when slinging up. All my USGI rifles have a M1907 sling and it works. Even works on my AR15A2! I've been using some of the same slings since the second Appleseed at Ramseur and have yet to damage one. Neatsfoot oil works wonders to soften the leather. Do a search for setting up a M1907 sling and there may be info on CMPs site.

Both the USGI web sling and the 1907 leather sling have their hard core supporters.
I have both and use the USGI web sling for most of my range trips.
My 1907 is not broken in, is very stiff, and is amazingly solid in use.  But not as 'natural' for me as it is a newer sling type with less trigger time for me.

Les Tam is a premium manufacturer of 1907 leather slings, does not advocate any oil treatments or softeners, the sling is perfect as sold and does not need to be conditioned.

A user who is proficient with the 1907 leather sling is very fast in and out of the sling, position changes that require sling length adjustments are done to known specific hole location and are thus perfectly repeatable.

A said above, for precision and repeatability, the 1907 is best. The web sling is excellent, especially if you have about two million draftees learning how to use it and care for it.

Howdy All,
I like and use them both. Web slings on Appleseeding rigs, 1907's on hunting and highpower.
As explained to me long ago by some old Appleseed Instructor... , the web sling is ultimately adjustable. The 1907 slings are ultimately comfortable.
All of my 1907 slings are from Turner Saddlery, you get what you pay for.
For treating my 1907 slings I use Hubberd's shoe grease, it softened them up properly on the first application.
Also use Hubberd's on Motorcycle Leathers, Boots, Wifeys purses and I think my brother uses it on the pads on his saxophones.

Happy Appleseeding,

I have both.  Use both.  Happy with both.

Field shooting like Appleseed teaches?  USGI all the way.  Easy, infinitely adjustable, and inexpensive.

High power competition shooting?  1907 (Eric Hollis Slings), rigged wire-tight while wearing a hardback shooting coat.  Not so easy, adjustable, or inexpensive.

Different tools for different jobs.

Thanks guys! and appreciate the link eaglescouter!

Well, I spent a bit of time playing with the 1907 and after 10 minutes thought " this is way too much work!"  especially since it's tight and new. However after I got it set up I do see the advantage of it, position is much more positive/consistant in the loop and the bottom stays attached to the weapon...I kinda like that.

I'll have to try them side by side and make a better assesment, hopefully there will be a 1907 smart person there to make sure I'm doing it right.

Oh while video was helpful the guy was kinda long winded...I foulf this old WW army one to be EXCELLENT of both sling use/set-up and skills...some sound VERY familiar!

So I just came across this thread, and might be old but my 2 cents, I owe you a nickle... hit me up at an AS and ask for it  :)
I swear by Turner Saddlery M1907 LEATHER slings. I do not prefer their "all weather sling" made in biothane, that is just my preference. I have found in the humidity down in the deep south the biothane just lock up and won't "give" where it should. That is just me. Yes they are expensive, but, once set up, you never fool with it again. I don't mind a little up front work that just gets the job done forever. (okay now i owe you a dime)
But, please don't get me wrong, I am not saying a bad word about a web cotton GI, and have bunches of them!!! Either one will get the job done, but, like everything else, ergonomics is what makes it count when needed. And really, it is a personal preference thing. What works for you is what you should go with in the end. (now it is 15 cents)
