Prescription eyeglasses optimized for shooting rifles with scope?

I have only recently started wearing prescription eyeglasses most of the time for reading and computer work.  And I realize that glasses would help me see more clearly for driving, shooting, etc.  I need some new glasses.  With that in mind:

I understand that having eyeglasses optimized for the distance to front sight can help shooting.  The questions I have are:

1.  Is it helpful to have prescriptions optimized for shooting with a scope on rifle?

2.  if so, what distance would that be?  Or where in the scope is the reticle mounted?  Or do I optimize the eyeglass prescription in another way?

My scopes are mounted for turkey neck shooting.

Thanks in advance.

Scope shooting uses your standard long distance vision, since the focus is "out there".  Then, you just focus the reticle to your distance glasses.

Guntuckian

Yep, Vinnie is right.

But, iron sight shooting uses a hyper focal prescription, instead.  You want the focal distance to be 2 times the distance from your eye to your front post.  That way, the front post and the target will both be clear.

This is the method Ansel  Adams used to get those pictures of the wide vistas of Yosemite all in focus at once.

For a hyper focal focus, everything from half the focal distance to infinity will be acceptable in terms of its focus.

Several local Appleseeders have gone with the Revision Sawfly prescription inserts, me included.  These are safety glasses, the same as used by the military.  I bought mine off EBay, then had my optometrist write the Rx for the prescription inserts, and then had the inserts made and installed.

If your optometrist doesn't know about this kind of focus, shop around.  There is at least one "shooting eye doctor" who does know about this in most large urban areas.

You can also try your last pair of Rx eyeglasses.  They will often work, too, being now with a focal distance that is out past your arm lengths.  :-)

There are also diopter pinhole sights, too, that can be used.  They just block out the blurring.  But, they only work in very bright light conditions.  The hyper focal method works in all light conditions.

I was fortunate to find an eye doc that is the eye doc for many of our local biathlon team.

He had me bring in my primary rifles, (one with a scope, one without) to help him with my prescriptions.

He measured eye to scope and eye to front sight. Was able to fix me up with a single lens  that worked with the open sights and scope.

The scope I use has a focus ring.

Are the Sawflys heavy and how far from your face are the corrective lenses? I have to wear glasses with the nose pads on a the wires to get them a little farther from my face or the glasses fog up too much. Big cheeks ya know... Can't bring my eye doc my rifles as I use the VA and they kind of frown upon bringing firearms onto a federal military installation.

Thanks for the input everyone.  I will talk with the doc and see what she says.  If I don't like the answers, might switch docs.

Popeye,

The Sawflys are not heavy.  They sit extreamly close to your face.  So close that they have to be ground a special way.  As they are military issue you should be able to have the company grind the lenses for you.  They will grind single vision lenses for anyone but will not grind bi-focal lenses without going to one of the military doctors. :(

They will send the directions on how they need ground to you to give to your eye doctor.  You can contact them on their website.

They have anti-fog cleaner available.

I bought mine off EBay and the other pair at a mil-surplus store.

I'll check out their website. Probably will have to go out in town to get them made since I'm retired and the VA doesn't really go above and beyond for any of us vets, I don't see them doing a special grind.

Ask they may have direct access to Revisions as they are military issue.

I bought a set of "Standard" shooting glasses at my Dr's office. Yellow and the BiFocal is at the top. Work great for rifle scope, iron sight, and pistol! Just bought the lenses and had them fitted to an old frame I had.
