What a truely amazing Appleseed we conducted at Carrolll, Ohio this weekend.  There were so many special moments that I will share in follow up posts. I wanted to get a placeholder out here as soon as I got home so that our shooters had someplace to share their thoughts.

Much more to come.

Actual AAR:

Wow what a special Appleseed.  This was our first event at the Central Ohio Coon Hunters Assoc range in Carroll, Ohio.  First off, a big thank you to the club.  You guys rolled out the welcome matt and all the shooters appreciated your efforts.  Lunch was great both days and the weather was just perfect.  We had a sold out shoot of 24 shooters and Saturday morning dawned clear, cool with a nice breeze and low humidity.  It was just a perfect day.

All the shooters showed up on time (Huzzah) and they were eager to get going.  The welcome and safety brief was presented and rifles were brought to the line. The morning Red Coat showed promise with half the group with three shots in the 100 yd target and nine at 200.  We had five join Daniel Morgan's riflemen and we had one person clear it.  This was a promising start to what was a great bunch of shooters.

Instructions began with the steady hold factors and six steps. This took longer than normal as we had a large number of folks that needed slings setup and stock built up but it was worth the time as our results will show.  It is also important to note that we had several "Adaptive Appleseed" shooters working from a table on the line due to physical issues.

NPOA was introduced and before we knew it, it was lunch time.  This was in the clubhouse where the club had a great spread set out for us.  The first strike was delivered and we were back on the line.  IMC was presented along with steady hold in seated and standing.  The day ended with a practice AQT and the second strike.  As the range has a local rule that no rounds could go down range until 10 AM on Sunday, we saved the third strike for Sunday morning.

Sunday dawned every bit as nice as Saturday.  We took roll of the shooters and started the day with the third strike which included the DOMs.  This was done on purpose so we could use the lunch break for a special presentation by one of our Appleseed Riflemen at lunch. More on that later.

Once we got to the line, we completed several NPOA drills and went right into the AQTs.  From the very first AQT, we started making Riflemen and Riflewomen. After two AQTs, it was lunch time, again in the club house.

During lunch, we had the pleasure of a presentation by Joe Forte.  Joe is a past president of the club, an Appleseed Rifleman and a Revolutionary War Re-enactor.  Joe came in the uniform of a 3rd Pennsylvania Rifleman and gave a presentation on events between Lexington and Concord and Yorktown.  He has actual examples of a Brown Bess, a French Charleville musket, a period fowler and a Pennsylvania rifle for the shooters to examine.  After lunch during an afternoon break, he demonstrated the protocol for firing the Charleville musket and hit his target almost dead center.  He then coached one of our shooters through firing a shot from the musket. The shooter was just a bit low on his target.

AQTs continued through the afternoon and we had a great success.  Overall, there were 16 Rifleman scores shot and many others in the 190+ range.  We had five new Riflemen, one new Riflewoman and one re-qualifier.

Congrats to:

Rob:  231, 222, 233, 224, 215
Krista (Joe's daughter in law): 214, 222, 221
Steve: 216, 210, 221
Corey: 215
Roger: 215
Matt (Krista's husband and Joe's son): 222
Emil (one of our Adaptive AS's): 215
Mystery target: 220  (No name on the target)

The weekend came to a close with the Sunday Red Coat and improvement was evident.

Since I was calling the line most of the time, I didn't have time to shoot many photos. Here's what I have...

Spending some quality time discussing history:

Speaking of Redcoats, several of them didn't fare any too well against this team of sharpshooters...

Many thanks to the crew at the Central Ohio Coon Hunters Association. This was our first event, and we hope for many more.

If anyone else has photos, please feel free to post them here.

Wow, those are some *really* nice groups on those redcoats! Nice job.

My sincerest Thanks to the instructors and participants at this Appleseed weekend.  From my own observation it was conducted in the most professional and proper manner.  But, when dealing with Appleseed Instructors that's what you get, so it's no surprise!
Thanks again.

Joe,

And thank you for your re-enactor presentation on Sunday on the events that followed during the Rev War and for your demonstration of the Charleville musket for everybody.  And, I was impressed with your accuracy.  You plugged him.  But, I would expect nothing less from an Appleseed Rifleman.

Please extend our thanks to the Central Ohio Coon Hunters for hosting the event.  We hope to return next year.

Wow, what a great weekend of shooting. When I found out who the instructors would be for this weekend, I knew my wife would be in good hands. I helped only as her coach. She had some troubles on Saturday dealing with scope eye relief, but we easily solved that by using a larger stock (thank you, Ruger Modular Stock System, and Dad, for having the different size inserts). On Sunday, she started strong with good groups on the sighter targets and her confidence was high, for good reason. She shot a 203 on her first AQT. I needed to leave around lunchtime, but TexasT suggested I stick around with a camera, just in case. Sure enough, she earned her Rifleman patch with a 212 on her second AQT. But she wasn't done. She requalified twice more, with higher scores. Plus, I came away with an orange hat and am anxious to put it to use, serving as an IIT.

Thank you to Corvette, Cadence, TexasT, GoodOldFriend, SirBob. and last but not least, Lozen. You made this weekend a great success, for shooters in southern Ohio and for our family. Now Krista is asking to go shooting and there may be a 10/22 under the Christmas tree this year... ;D

Texas T

So glad to have you and your family as a part of the team. Thanks for stepping up and taking a hat.   O0 O0

What a great weekend, I was very sorry I could not complete the entire weekend.  IT was exciting to work with the entire cadre of instructors and patriotic shooters that were at the event.  I cannot imagine a nicer facility to have a shoot at and hope that it is a continued relationship.  Looking forward to seeing everyone back out there soon.  Congrats to the shooters that accomplished qualification as a rifleman and to those who cleared a red coat.
