RUGER 10/22 Receivers *out of spec*

So when I took up the Appleseed Rifleman journey a few years back...I bought a 10/22 carbine, tech sights, Hogue overmolded stock, etc.  Basically a real nice Appleseed rig!

I could NEVER manage to qualify with that rifle.  Ever!  The rear tech sight I have is the elevation/windage adjustable type.  Windage was MAXED right, I mean...not even a BIT of wiggle room.

I am building a CMP rimfire sporter rifle, and also wanted to build my daughter an Appleseed 10/22 for her to practice/learn with.

I had another scoped 10/22, that I did qualify with the first time I used it.

This past Friday I had an idea.....I swapped the tech sights to the scoped build.... and a friend took to the range for me.  My buddy is a CMP Distinguished Rifleman...and I have all confidence in his ability to sight a rifle.  I sent him to the range (with what is now my daughters rifle) and he was able to sight it in.  Rear sight is not centered..., but I have a LOT of wiggle room with windage now.  That rifle printed a 20 shot (2 mags) 2MOA group!  Yeah...it will work.

FOR ANYONE Struggling on AQT with iron sights..., that has the rear windage "MAXED" on their tech sights...., consider swapping receivers for the tech sights.  Another option is to return to Ruger..., but for me that was not an option...too many aftermarket parts on it.  Ruger states they will inspect/correct...however any "non standard" parts will be replaced with stock Ruger parts.

SO....it is likely that the 4 mounting holes on my receiver were not centered....or the barrel receiver hole is not centered.

I will still use that out of spec receiver...with my new Volquartsen barrel that is coming.  The beauty of the VQ barrel is that the scope will mount to the barrel and not the receiver.  SO...not a concern.

Makes me think as well....how many other receivers are out of spec?  I mean one would not know really unless they are using tech sights (if it is indeed the 4 mounting holes not being centered) because of the stock RUGER iron sights that are where?  ON THE BARREL! LOL

Scope shooters may not even realize....those that are mounting scopes to the receiver...as SCOPES tend to have a LOT of windage built into them.

FWIW...interested if anyone else has had the same issues.

I've sent two 10/22s back to Ruger for the same/similar issues, out of about a dozen or so.

In one, a first-edition 50th anniversary model, the barrel was visibly canted (front sight was to the right) out of the box.  ???
In another, a takedown model, a set of tech sights was installed and (like yours) windage was all the way right, still not able to sight in at 25M.
Both times Ruger not only paid for the shipping, but they fixed the issue quickly, and sent a new magazine back with each one.

P.S. -  In the case of the takedown rifle, the tech-sights were sighted in for me (I didn't remove them) :)

So, a good word for Ruger's customer service, at least.

Ghostring,

You have had a great RUGER experience.  I called them about this 2 yrs or so ago.  They stated they would need the entire rifle...and that anything "not standard" would be replaced with "Standard" parts.

IF I could send Ruger just the receiver, that would be awesome!  It is also one of those 50th Anniversary receivers.  Carbine model.

Do you by chance have a point of contact at Ruger you could share with me?

I know with a scope it will work just fine.  But...it is still a "non conforming" part...and would like that to be rectified.

I sent my wife's 10/22 back for the same issue a couple years ago: rail-mounted tech sights ran out of windage. Ruger did want the whole rifle, and they replaced my modified bolt release (a few minutes with a file and the vise fixed that). They paid shipping and turned it around in reasonable time, so I have no complaints other than their initial QC sucked.

I think the problem was in the receiver's counterbore for the barrel, rather than the rail holes? There were others on this board who had the same problem, and confirmed that sending it in was the only way to fix it.

Chris,

I do not have a contact, sorry -- I Just called them up.  I did have to send in the whole rifle, though.
It was about 2 years back, or whenever the 50th special edition first showed up.

Yes, during the 50th anniversary year many, but not all 10/22s had the barrel hole in the receiver drilled crooked. You can easily tell by laying the barreled receiver on its side on a flat table, measuring the distance between the table and the lower edge of the muzzle, and doing it again on the other side.

Ruger has been passively good about fixing this problem; i.e., if you complain and send it to them, they'll fix it. But many 10/22 owners never install a receiver sight or even a scope but use the OEM sights, so they don't know the barrel is out of line with the receiver.

This is what happens when you try to meet both production volume and low unit cost goals at the same time. It's a variation of the "Good, fast, cheap - pick any two" principle.

Update:

Called Ruger Monday afternoon....complained about the "send the whole rifle" in.  Asked to speak with a Supervisor.  Complained again to Supervisor...same response, spoke with Manager.

Manager called me yesterday and left me a voice mail.  They want me to call this morning, with the SERNO of my receiver.

MAYBE they will accept just the receiver!?

I'll keep ya'll posted.

**Update**

After some "hemmin and hawwin", Ruger has provided me with an RMA# to ship just the receiver back.   They said over and over that this is not their standard practice.  She also told me that if indeed the receiver is out of spec..., I'll likely receive a new rifle.  Not a 50th anniversary edition..., but I could care less about that.  A receiver is all I need.  Rifle...WAY cool!  If they do that....I'll order some tech sights and a stock and build my other daughter her rifle.

Stoked!  Shipping it this afternoon.

Yes it's been a "known" problem for a while and is made obvious when the rear sight is receiver mounted instead of barrel mounted.  I'd bet if one counted the clicks on a zeroed it would end up being quite a ways off from mechanical center.

Well....I'm HAPPY!

Ruger just called and stated that the receiver I shipped is not repairable (Duhhh)....and agreed to ship me a Stainless 10/22 carbine in return.

They will also reimburse the FFL charge after I email them a pic of the receipt.

Way cool!

Now to order a Magpul X-22 stock and tech sights!  Will be my other daughters rifle...or an Appleseed loaner.
