Hey- I just picked up a Savage 64 fv sr (Made in Canada BTW) well priced , shoots great. The mag release is less than ideal however.
I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts/suggestions on mods for  improving the rifle?

The rifle is solid, the mag system weak.
I would gladly pay another 20 bucks for such a rifle with a more durable mag mount.
Unfortunately, savage took the low road, saved a few nickels per rifle.

For sure the mag system is not that great-I was wondering if I could make an extended release for the rifle, and perhaps polish the well a bit. The mags don't go into the rifle smoothly and positively latch up.

Sluggo,
I'd think you'd be able to do the same thing as you would on the Marlin LTR's...but I've never held one before, so YMMV

DIP makes doodads for Savage 64s, including an extended mag release and better bottom metal.

Ok, I am guilty of typing before putting brain in gear.
My mention on magazines and mounting is only good for the Mark IIs
No experience with M64s here.

Only seen a couple at AS, they ran well except for one circumstance.

Shooter had been having various trails and when he got low enough in prone his support forearm would get forced into the magazine, a sit protrudes quite a bit. He actually was pushing hard enogh against the magazine to alter it's alignment and caused numerous feeding issues, Once it was caught and he adjusted his support arm slightly he had no further issues.

Oops I got the model number mixed up, mine is a 64-TR-SR, not FV-SR.

I shot a couple of AQT's with it and found it to  work well, with the exception of the mag change, I did not find a problem with the mag hitting my forearm although I can see where that would be a possible problem as the mag positioning is fairly finicky.

Replace the mag release with an extended one. Replace the bolt/charging handle with an extended one. Diversified's work very well and I use them on my wife's Appleseed rifle.
The mag binding the bolt issue effect is common on a lot of rifles (rugers with the 25 round come to mind) your just going to have to adapt/modify your position.
