AR-15: QD Socket Sling Swivels

Hey Appleseed folks, I have a quick question.

My AR-15 has a fixed rear sling swivel, but the front sling swivel is in a quick-detach port and spins fairly freely.

I know my M1 front swivel does not spin, and there is significant use of GI slings in Appleseed instruction.

My question is, will this spinning front swivel be usable for the techniques taught, or should I look into finding some way to keep it from turning in it's QD socket?

Thanks!

The spinning nature of the qd socket may provide a little frustration, but not in any significant amount.  It is a simple matter of ensuring that the sling is in the correct orientation prior to use.

That's good to know. I see that you sir, are a Master Instructor. Now, I do have a folding bipod mounted on my rifle that just so happens to prevent the spinning when not deployed.

I know bipods are a big no-go for shooting AQT. I imagine that any final determination would be up to the shoot boss at the seed I attend, but in your experience would you allow somone to leave it on a rifle as long as it wasn't being used to stabilize said rifle?

The primary concern with having a bipod mounted to the rifle is whether or not it will interfere with your getting a solid position.  The rear of the bipod does not make for a comfortable hand stop.

I actually prefer the front swivel to spin. If you get a twist in your sling, all you have to do is spin it back into the correct position. It doesn't effect my position at all. Also, if you can mount the QD port closer to the receiver, it can double as a hand stop and help build a more stable position.

They are seldom lost, but when foolishly forfeited or tamely resigned." ~Jonas Clarke
