Is this part of a Remington 597 (.22LR) trigger group??

Took down my Remington 597 (.22LR) for a cleaning and this fell out onto the table:

At first I thought it was one of the hammer spacers, but I checked, and both are in there.  Plus, the hammer spacers are larger that this little piece.

I don't know if this is related, but when we were shooting it last time the safety would not go on (or maybe it would not go off,  don't remember  which)…  We tired a few things, including turning the rifle upside down and shaking it… then it worked fine after that.  Then, when I went to clean it the next day, that tiny piece fell out of the trigger group.

Rifle seems to function fine without it, but... well... (?)

Anyone familiar with all the parts of a Remington 597 (.22LR) trigger group to know if it actually belongs in there??

Thanks for any help…

Yuck...  Yes it is. (part of the trigger group) This is what Rimfirecentral has termed the "mouse toilet" and you do need it.

There are two bars that connect the trigger to the sear.  This holds on the pin connecting them, and the little spring that pulls them downward.  Without it, you can get a failure to reset.  (ask me how I know).

I'm not sure if you can get it back on with the trigger group in the housing or not.  Give it a shot, but you may need to knock out the pins holding the other trigger parts in to press this back on.

Thank you soooo much for that...
Very helpful! (unlike the horse beater up there)

:DH:

2CL, the manual does not have an exploded view of the trigger group.  I think many manufacturers do this so as to encourage owners to not disassemble it...

Exactly....

Even with an exploded view of the trigger group, which I have consulted, the part is not shown there:

#29 looks similar, but those hammer spacers are bigger than my mystery part.

The nice thing about a forum like this is that we are able to interact with others who have real life experiences.  I'd be interested to hear Caliper's story about how he discovered this part missing from his 597....

Yup, that's a happy 597 trigger!

Your other exploded view is a Jard 597 trigger, not a Remington factory 597 trigger...  Entirely different parts.  The Jard piece is one of the best upgrades out there though, love mine.

It's not such a weird story...  One of my 597's had problems (during an AQT, of course) where the trigger did not reset.  Of course, this was one of "my" 597's, not one of the loaners.  It had chambered the next round, but the hammer followed the bolt home.  I could manually rack the bolt and then it would work, but I kept ending up with live rounds on my mat and missing holes on my target...  So, being an engineer, I pulled things apart and found the trigger linkage not looking right.  Some reading on RFC and I had found a pic of how things should be and about a year later put the parts back together right.
