V-Ring Origin?

I'm not sure where to put this, but I have a question that has long bothered me.

What is the reason for the V-ring (on any pre x-ring target) being a "V"?

I understand it came about after the 1921 National Matches when "Dad" Farr made 71 straight bulleyes and the need was shown for something other than the shoot-until-you-put-one-out system, but why a V?

The "X" I understand.  I could see it being an "A" even.   Maybe "T" for "Tiebreaker".  But " V"?
A friend postulates that it may have meant "Victory".  Maybe, but I'm not convinced.

Ive searched, I've looked, I've asked. I'm now asking here. Thanks.

Naturally, within five minutes of asking here I learn the answer, and it leaves me feeling like an idiot.

It corresponds with the max points per shot...in Roman numerals. Decimal target...10 possible...Roman numeral X.   V target...5 possible...Roman numeral V.

How do you get NPOA with a gladius? ???

V is the Roman numeral for 5 just as X is the Roman numeral for 10. They're numbers not letters.

Great Question, and great responses!

Years ago in college, there was one student who would always ask such questions.  I quickly treasured his questions, because inevitably I would learn something new whenever he asked a question.  Later, in the martial arts, I learned this was called "beginners mind", a necessary state necessary to learn.  It is simply what we in Appleseed call a teachable attitude.  There is no such thing as a bad question if asked earnestly!

Thanks!

"Responsibility is a unique concept... You may share it with others, but your portion is not diminished. You may delegate it, but it is still with you... If responsibility is rightfully yours, no evasion, or ignorance or passing the blame can shift the burden to someone else. Unless you can point your finger at the man who is responsible when something goes wrong, then you have never had anyone really responsible.
