Cabela's in Hoffman Estates, IL has had a jaw-dropping amount of 22 on hand for about a month now.  The last three times I was there they had multiple brands and tons of it.  Dare I say... pre-scare amounts on the shelves.

Are other parts of the country seeing a return of 22?

What is the price at Cabelas?

One shop has had cases of 22 the whole time but sold at market price per brick and if you wanted more you had to go through GunBroker for a case.

I'll check out Wheeling Cabelas on the way home from New Philly this weekend.

Thanks

Chuck

You would think that I would have looked at prices....   %). But I was looking at the brands...  Stacks of cci tactical, minimag, thunderbolt, fed match, win x, and more.

Next time I get back there I will check prices.

Online, Cabelas allows 500 Mini-Mag per order per day. $8.98/100.  If you live close and can pick up at a store you may be able to save on Shipping.

Winchester is still limited to 100 per order.

Ya gotta watch the stuff!  I've been seeing lots of U.S. manufactured stuff malfunctioning in every make of .22 auto loader at our events. In doing my own hands on testing of the stuff against the pre-shortage stuff, in completely clean, properly lubricated firearms, even old, as in 40 plus year old, American made standard velocity 40 grain solids performed flawlessly, when compared to current production American made 40 grain HIGH VELOCITY solids!  At a recent event, the current production stuff was short recoiling, in some rifles, liked to feed to the left of the chamber into an extractor clearance cutout on Marlin 795s, and about every other ammo induced malfunction you can imagine.  Even had the rim come off one Federal AutoMatch, the rest of the case stay in the chamber, and the next round feed into the remaining brass in the chamber! I've never seen that happen on a rimfire before!

In comparison, I had a limited amount of ancient Federal Standard Velocity which performed across the board without a hiccup. Likewise, some four year old CCI Mini-Mags. Even some old & current Remington Thunderbolt.  For overall accuracy and functioning, I used Wolf Match that I paid through the nose for at Camp Perry last summer. All of these performed flawlessly.  The cheapest stuff I saw at Camp Perry this summer was S&K "Magazine" in what appears to be a "bean" can. 500 rounds for $53, plus the 7% OH sales tax.  Guess what?  It, too, is flawless!

As to the original question, is it starting to shake loose?  Yes.  Is the quality what it was?  Not yet!  Are the prices ever going to get back to $20 a brick?  I wouldn't hold my breath!  I bought a case of Wolf Match at 'Perry. Why? Because it's cheaper by the case, and it was there, plus it shoots reliably and more accurately than anything else I've found.

And, no, I'm not a paid endorser!  Just a cheap, Dangerous Old Man!

Stay vigilant, my friends!

Picked up 2 boxes of the Fed. AutoMatch at Field and Stream/Dick's Sporting Gooods.  If ran fine in my daughter's 10/22.  $20+tax/325 rounds.

There were other customers looking at the 22 shells at the WV Cabela's so I didn't get prices.

AA man at the new Philly shoot was having a fail to fire almost every 10 rounds on a box of Winchester.  Went away when he changed ammo.

I agree with the above poster than quality control on the ammo is not what it used to be.  The previously spotty ammo seems worse.

We have been finishing up school shopping and had the chance to look for ammo while we were out.

What I found surprised me.

.22 ammo was everywhere. Dicks Sporting Goods (2 locations), Field & Stream, Cabela's (Wheeling), Rural King and Wal Mart all had it.

This was during the week first thing in the morning.

Someone asked about Cabela's prices -Remington Golden Bullets 1400 round bucket $90, Federal A.E. 400 round brick $25, Winchester 100 round pack $10, CCI Standard Velocity 50 round box $5. Limit 1200 rounds total or 1 bucket of Golden Bullets.

Slowly, it surfaces!

I was down in "the bunker", so named by the inspector before we bought the place because he said it's built like one  ;), but we've been here over two years and still haven't finished unpacking! ::) I've been hunting for my stash of pre- 2012 CCI Mini-Mag 40 grain Solids from a batch of 3,500 I bought before it all dried up. I finally found it, last Saturday!  Monday I found a partial box of CCI "Stingers",

In reference to my previous post, the current production domestic stuff seems to be a little weak. Soooo, my next project is going to be taking all of the different .22 L.R. ammo in my inventory out to the range and fire it over my chronograph!  That should prove, once and for all, if the domestic manufacturers have knuckled under to pressure from the wrong coast, to make the stuff "sub par!" >:D

go to slickguns.com and monitor the specials, they also have a search function

there is always ammo for sale somewhere, but shipping is often the killer

sometimes, you will see and ad for $30-35 per brick, limit 1, but then the same company will run another special on a different brand/bullet weight of .22LR, then offer free shipping over $99    The trick then is to go to the website  and find another $30-40 worth of stuff you need.  I know, hoop-jumping, but still better than 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years ago.

At the Volga, IA shoot, most people had managed to find 1000 rounds per shooter.  It mighty have been 3 different kinds of .22LR, but they had it.

It is getting better.

The Wolfhound

The situation has indeed improved.  I have managed to always have surplus ammo at shoots but have had fewer takers for that surplus over the last year. 2 years ago, I always had people ready to buy it.  It is not sitting on the shelf the way most other ammo can be found, but it is lingering in the stores a bit longer.  I think most folks are past the "reflex" buy and only buy if they need it.

Kennebago

Cabela's in Huntsville, AL has all the CCI Standard and Federal Automatch you could want, and a lot of match-grade stuff nobody is touching (SK, but there are Norma and RWS loads I am not familiar with too). Also, they have a steady supply of Golden Bullet buckets on endcap displays.

CCI Standard ends up at $5/50 rounds out the door, I think Automatch is $22 per 325-round box.

I was in Connecticut when the panics started, peaked, and then collapsed there - I can't believe how different it is now, although to be fair I've changed states twice since then. All of the local shops I've been in have plenty of rimfire in stock, and plenty of my bolt gun's preferred practice load to boot. I grin like a dope every time I pick up a few boxes - lots of improvement in the last 12-18 months.

Now if CCI Standard would just come all the way back down to $3.50/box like I used to pay back in the "aughties"...

Prescott

It has not improved much here in the Pacific NW.   I never see any .22 ammo at WalMart or a local chain called Bi-Mart.   The last few times I was in Cabelas, they only had one or two varieties and are still limiting purchases to 100 rounds or a bulk box.   The last purchase I made there was a box of Thunderbolts for $23.

A local company called Fisherman's Marine has been the best source of ammo for me.   They usually have a couple brands to choose from, but also have a limit of one brick per visit.

I realize it gives a warning about the thread being over 60 days but it's worth bringing up since this thread is still near the top anyway.

There are sites that use software APIs to fetch ammo prices. I've found .22LR CCI Mini-Mag and even Stingers using the search, almost daily. They do have a limit (sometimes), so check the first couple listings.

The site i use is http://ammoseek.com allows you to sort by price, cost per round, size.. all kinds of options. Enjoy!
