M1 Carbine for Appleseed

Hi all,

I'm considering doing another Appleseed shoot this fall. I just picked up a snazzy 1944 Inland M1 Carbine at the last gun show, has anyone ever shot at an event with an M1 Carbine? I know the ammo is more expensive than .22, but it's also easier to find and maybe more fun to shoot O0

Has anyone ever seen an M1 Carbine on the firing line?

I've seen several of them.

They're not bad little rifles to shoot but they have the same issues all the other little rifles have. Short barrel and sight radius being chief concerns. The other "Appleseed-specific" issue is the sling mount. It's on the side so that tends to cant the rifle a bit but it's not a huge deal.

Everyone I've seen shooting them seems to have a blast. Bring it out. It's not the rifle that does the trick anyway. It's you!

Brought mine out LOTS of times.  Second only to my Garand in terms of personal enjoyment.

But keep in mind that they aren't the most accurate rifles in the world.  I have cleared a Redcoat with it, but never broken 200 on an AQT.  Mine is a relatively good one.

The side-saddle sling doesn't help.  There is a way to do a loop sling with the stock M1 Carbine sling, but it's tricky and takes too long.  In hasty, you are likely to get canting.  Some shooters rig up a more typical, downward-facing front swivel and use an M1 GI loop sling, which I would recommend.  In as-issued configuration, I find I can shoot it just as well or better in cross-legged seated position than in prone... but that's just me, it may fit you different.

If I try enough times, eventually I will get a Rifleman score with it, but... if you're chasing the patch, I'd suggest something more consistent.  If just for fun, rock on.

Thanks. I thought the side-swivel might mess things up a bit, it seems like you could put a sling swivel in the bottom of the barrel band maybe? My gun came without the barrel band screw, so there's nothing to mess up there by putting the swivel in place.

I'll play around with the gun a little to see if I can get enough accuracy out of it to take to Appleseed.
