Interesting type of barrel obstruction

So this past weekend I saw something I'd never seen before.  One of our shooters was trying to clear his 10/22 and couldn't get the round in the chamber to clear.  So we grabbed the range rod and put it down the barrel.  The rod got about 75% of the way down the barrel and then got jammed up on something, it couldn't reach all the way to the stuck round.  We pulled the rod out and tried again, same result.  Eventually we got the round out by pulling it through the ejection port with pliers.  But we were still uncertain if there was something still in the barrel.  So after some further attempts with the rod, we eventually grabbed a rock and used it as a hammer to beat the rod the rest of the way down the barrel.  and this is what popped out:

It's not a great picture, hopefully the other instructor got one more in focus.  It looked like a solid cylinder shaped piece of lead.  About the same size as a .22 case

Any ideas on what this was?  I appreciate the help

Oddly enough, we pushed the same thing out of the chamber of a new Remington 597 at Salem, OH on Sunday, but it was only about 1/3 as long.  We were puzzled, too.  Birdman is looking into it.

Looks like a couple of .22 bullets that have been stuck in a barrel and driven out with a cleaning rod. I have seen this happen before with a c96 Mauser.

Yeah, looks like he fired a round after a squib and the bullets welded together

The first picture above looked like the lead "slug" was hollow.  That's what we had at Salem.  Looked almost like a donut.

Indeed it was hollow.  Like a very, very long donut.  It also wasn't complete all the way around, like a donut with a bite taken out of it.  Dang it, now I want a donut. :wb:

When you were beating on the rod with the rock, the rod was driven through the bullet.
Thanks, Hawkeye.
