What are trimming dies and how do they function?

Interesting. Have you ever used them? I would be interested to know what people think of using the trim dies instead of a stand alone case trimmer.

Can't say that I have.  In fact, I had to look up exactly what it was that you were talking about, because I wasn't sure, myself.

The idea is sound, and if you were only going to be sizing at most a couple hundred cases, it would probably work well enough.

When I reload, I process not less than 1k brass, and hand trimming that many cases would take forever, with either a trim die, or the hand-crank case trimmers.

For volume runs, I cannot think of a better tool than the Giraud case trimmer.  Spendy, but trim 3k pieces of brass and you'll consider it money well spent.  The Giraud trims, chamfers and deburs all in the same cutting action; most trimmers require three separate actions to do the same.

ItsanSKS makes a good point regarding volume reloading and a device such a Giraud.

I do low volume reloadimg and switched to trimming dies several years ago. They save a little time. I have Redding trimming dies. My only criticism is that they could have a little more adjustment in them.
