Electronic replacement for what Appleseed teaches? Or an enhancement to it?

are we about to be obsoleted?

IIRC, Ronnie Barrett was also working on something like this.

Wixom, MI --(Ammoland.com)- Trijicon's new CCAS (Continuously Computed Aiming Solution) is designed to support a multitude of weapons systems ranging from vehicle mounted machine guns, infantry weapons to sniper rifles.
The CCAS greatly expands a warfighter's ability to quickly identify and engage targets by eliminating the cumbersome and time-consuming process of ranging, gathering and entering environmental data and generating a firing solution with a PDA.
The CCAS has ranging capability out to 2,000 meters and gathers environmental and weather data including temperature and atmospheric pressure. In just half a second after activation, the onboard computer generates a firing solution using the most advanced ballistic programs available and displays an aiming point on the green reticle. This includes computing leads for moving targets. If the warfighter can see the target through the high-quality, 6X optic, he can hit it.
Operators simply have to select their weapon and ammunition type from an extensive list of common weapon/ammunition combinations in U.S. military and NATO inventories, zero the system and CCAS does the rest. Set up, zeroing and operation are simple and intuitive. Power is supplied to the unit by four, commonly available CR123 batteries.
First-round hits on targets allow soldiers, sailors and marines to dominate the battle space and save lives. In the frantic, fast-paced world of the battlefield, coming up with a firing solution for distant, fleeting targets was the near exclusive domain of specially trained sniper teams or squad designated marksmen equipped with special weapons, laser rangefinders, ballistic computers and weather centers. The Trijicon CCAS integrates all these tools into one optic and puts long-range, first-round hits on moving targets within reach of the average infantryman armed with standard individual or crew served weapon systems.
The CCAS is a force multiplier, making the warfighter faster and more lethal.

Looks and sounds inexpensive.  Kidding, of course.  And it runs on batteries, I'm sure (sorry, didn't bother to completely read the article).  Does it squeeze the trigger, too?  No?  Hmm.  I guess people will still need to learn how to shoot rifles.  Scopes didn't make iron sights obsolete and I doubt this will make actual training and practice a thing of the past either.

It's a fancy little doodad and no mistake.

But can it tell the history?
Can it connect that history to the shooter?

Will it maintain a steady dialog with the shooter's elected officials?

Fearful but resolute.

Turbo will never be obsoleted!!   ^:)^

When my "grey-matter technology" fails, my rifle will be useless to me anyway.   :'(

But it will not be useless to my progeny in liberty and marksmanship!!!   O0

Tribuo mihi licentia vel tribuo mihi nex.
If Appleseed is not about making a difference in this country, starting at the local level, then we are nothing more than a distraction that will lead to the loss of our inheritance.

Kosciusko

just kicking things over    ;)

But ask yourself:  how many shooters will spend $2000 on it and refuse to spend $80 on an Appleseed ?  because one  is a sexy tech fix and the other requires effort and discomfort.

I don't see how technology toys and Appleseed are exclusive. I drive a car with an automatic transmission for convenience as my daily driver; I was in stop-and-go traffic a lot when I bought the car so it was a definite plus. I am perfectly capable of driving a manual transmission vehicle and did so for several years. I think the skill sets learned in the shooting portion of Appleseed are important for anyone who wants to shoot a rifle well, regardless of the technology available, because sometimes the automated system may not be available.

The historical context and camaraderie found at an Appleseed event cannot be replaced by technology, but I'm sure every single person on this forum feels that way!

AFTERMATH

Much better than that stupid track-tag-fire-thingy I saw before - Actually, this sounds almost exactly what I proposed would be much better.

You'd still need steady hold factors, npoa, 6-steps, etc....   So substitute for the fundamentals.
But it sure make perfect sense as a possibly invaluable tool on the field of battle...  If it works right.
I doubt though, that Trijicon would put it out there if it didn't.

But I can't even afford an ACOG so, I guess I'll just stick with my irons.

This.

Kosciusko, to your marksmanship concerns...  The sight just puts the crosshairs where they need to be for range, wind, etc.  Great technology, and extremely useful in the hands of a Rifleman if it works as advertised and the batteries aren't dead.  If this technology made our marksmanship instruction obsolete however, then by the same logic any student you have a zeroed loaner rifle to will shoot a Riflemans score on their first AQT?

I vote "enhancement".  Hope we'll see a few on the line after they find their group size is the same with the sight as it was before.

I am not the politically correct police, but the verbage used by Trijicon in the OP is certainly objectionable at any Appleseed, and I think should be on this forum as well.
A rifle is always a rifle, only its users intent can make it a weapon.
This is a public board and while calling everyones attention to new technology is admirable would a link in this case not have been better with a narrative by the OP taking the place of the above quote.
Haven't we got enough of a battle raging in this Country over our rights without giving the other side another point to use in an arguement.
Additionally, we do not know who might be looking into coming to an Appleseed and seeing this decides it is not for them. After all, if they have not been to one yet, can we really expect that they would look at this information in the same light we do? I think not.
The thread was no doubt started with pure intentions, but perhaps it can be modified.
YMMV

I put it up as a technical discussion

if the mods think it's a bad idea, they can delete the thread.  I'm not going to self-censor.

That's a press release from a company that sells most of its output to the military.  'Weapons' is what they need and buy.  I don't expect Trijicon is going to craft an alternative release for the politically correct civilian market, the number of folks who would want and could afford it isn't worth their effort.  Nonetheless, it's primarily an electronic gadget, and we know what happens to the price of those over time.

While very neat, (I'm a huge sucker for gadgets) this seems only an incremental improvement to what is already available and I'd guess its price to be $10-$15k.

Consider for way less than half that cost a Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x with a Velocity 1000 LV.5 reticle in the FFP and a Bushnell 1600 ARC rangefinder one can make first round hits from the unsupported prone to 600 yds routinely. This gives you the range with the push of a button and the scope has holdovers all the way to 1000yds and marks for 5,10,and 15mph wind. No clicking turrets or forgeting where you are. Seems the same to me.

One could also, for a bit more money than above, get a Horus-Kestral combo (both scope and weather station) with a higher end range finder and in supported prone I've gone 1000 yds with first round hits. Its not that difficult and with this you add real time temp, pressure, and wind speed and direction, plus moving target leads which would seem klunky with the Trijicon's interface. (Disclaimer; while I like the Horus system, the Leupolds, Nightforce, and US Optics are better scopes and come with Horus reticles and Vortex has a few that are so close that they work also)

Just food for thought,

I just looked at the spec sheet for the CCAS.  It weighs 4.5 pounds!   :slap:  I don't forsee too many people wanting that on a rifle.  Maybe on a crew-served or vehicle-mounted weapon system.

Dude

Expensive as all get out, heavy, probably not as user-friendly as they make it seem. I don't even know if it's even an enhancement, if it doesn't apply to 99.9% of the shooters who couldn't swing the price. Reminds me of the super-putter that Rodney Dangerfield had in Caddyshack.

Sounds like military and police-the ones with deeppockets. At least for the time being.

My brain only weighs 3 lbs and it doesn't need batteries.  Plus it's useful for other things as well.
