Once I get it set up in my garage, the first order of business is to fix the dovetails on my 795's.

That thing looks an awful lot like my supermax mill! Let me know how the vfd works out, I have been considering one. My dad put one on his index mill, I like how quiet it is, but he hasn't installed any kind of tach to measure spindle speed. I would like to know how you handle it

Smoak,

If I understand correctly, there is a parameter you set in programming the VFD that is essentially your existing drive ratio. Once you determine that value, the readout on the VFD will be your tool rpm. I plan on ordering mine when I get home.

Excellence abounds! A quick trip to Radio Shack for some LM339N comparators, some desoldering/soldering, and the Digital Readout is working in both directions. Next up is fixing the x-axis powerfeed.

Tally to date $250.00 (initial purchase) + $5.00 (Radio Shack) = $255.00 so far.

Nothing looked swelled or burnt on the power feedboard. The wiring looked in tact also. The fuse was bad but a new one didn't get here going. I am going to take a gamble and replace the two IC's on the board and see if that was the problem. After 38 years I wouldn't blame them if they quit.

Power Feed Motor is doa. Smelled nice and burnt when I took it apart. There was oil past the gearbox seal and into the armature housing. I replaced the op amps on the controller board just because they are so cheap and I felt like taking a chance to no avail.  :'( I guess I will be hand cranking for the time being. I can take off the motor and controller board and and do a more directed and thorough trouble shoot at my leisure.

I did order a Hitachi 2hp Sensorless Vector Variable Frequency Drive to convert the 220v single phase to 220v three phase needed for the motor. The drive was cheaper than getting a single phase motor that would fit and it gives me several nice features. First is the variable speed by turning a knob instead of changing step pulleys. Second it has a built in braking that will be useful for power tapping holes. I over sized the VFD for robustness knowing that I can set the overload trip points lower to protect the 1hp motor.  By the end of the week I should have the spindle spinning then I will finally be able to fix the cant to the dovetails on my 795's.

After that I will make adjustable butt pieces for the 795 stocks to go along with the adjustable cheek risers I made previously. By turning the adjustment screws with a coin you can raise or lower the cheek riser and it was under $10 for all the parts. If anyone is interested I will post a more detailed treatment when I fix the next stock.

Just got my variable frequency drive (ie single phase to three phase converter). If I catch a second wind I might hook it up tonight after boy scouts. :D

Finally, the mill is turning. The motor sounds a little crunchy and I will be ordering some bearings for it. I learned a lesson about motors and rewinds. I am gathering that it is cheaper to rewind a motor for a specific voltage than to return it to its multi-voltage like new state. My motor has been rewound for 440v and it is not able to switch back to 220v. Fortunately, it my VFD can be set to cover for this but I do have a new motor and motor mount plate in my future.

I will post pix when I start making chips and do a detailed posting of the 795 dovetail fix.
