Came across the Bushnell Scopechief today at the Ladyseed in Elon, NC. There are no MOA indicators anywhere on the scope just little lines. We adjusted for windage and it corrected windage but raised elevation by three inches. Then we readjusted for elevation which came down but it threw windage off by an inch and a half.

Anyone have any suggestions?

That is typical of that scope. It is a very inexpensive scope and the reason the lines aren't marked is they aren't consistent either. Was it one of the ones with friction adjustments or did it actually have clicks?

That is also the reason I only make 1 correction at a time with an unknown scope. You don't get precise adjustments every time in inexpensive optics.

Scope is probably canted in the rings.

Need to check the verticle reticle line with a proper scope alignment tool that sets the 90 degree axis to a flat area on the receiver. Can be done roughly with a bubble level....

Have to agree with Cam here.  Any time you make a single adjustment, such as adjusting elevation, and you also get a windage adjustment, it is a REAL strong indicator that the scope is not square to the rifle.

There are many methods that one can employ to get the scope relatively square, but without feeler gauges and a inch-pound torque wrench, it is likely that the scope will rotate when tightening down the scope rings themselves.  Just taking the rifle to a gunsmith isn't even the answer, as many gunsmiths will simply eyeball the reticle.

"If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself."

A canted scope makes the rifle difficult to zero, as the adjustments are no longer (assuming they were to begin with) precise, *and* you also have to account for the lateral movement (windage) when adjusting.

This problem gets magnified when trying to dial in elevation for shooting at distance.

3 minutes of elevation caused 1.5 minutes of windage change, that's one hell of a cant.  You could probably even see that without a level. Just guessing that's about a 22.5 degree cant.

You shouldn't dial in elevation/windage changes for distance with a cheap scope. You will be disappointed in the results.

Depending on which vintage/flavor of scopechief it's a $20 scope.

Zero the rifle and leave it be, works fine for a hunting rig or shooting 25m AQT's.

YMMV

Scope platform mount directly to rail, no rings. Friction, no clicks. From pictures I can find is mid 1970ish scope. Totally hinky scope I am guessing. We suggested owner purchase different scope  :)
