For what the FAL is its a fantastic rifle, the fact of the matter is this, it was originally designed to fire an intermediate cartrage, I forget exactly the specific round but it was suppose to be between a 5.56 and 308, it unfortunately, or fortunately however you want to look at was set to come out at the same time as NATO decided that they would standardize their weapons to 9mm, 5.56x45, and 7.62x51. So with that said, FN pulled back and redesigned a few things to accommodate the larger 308 round and what you end up with is a rifle that is stretched to the utmost limits of its parts. And I have to say for a battle rifle they are extremely accurate.

Now if I was going to get a semi auto 308 and price was of no concern to me I would buy a MK 14, or a M39 basicly the same rifle but with subtle differences none the less.

I like my LMT + ACOG setup a lot.  It holds about .75 MOA with good ammo, a bipod, and me driving it.
While it is heavy, it balances and shoots as nicely as my Garand.  That said, the only way to go wrong between the LMT and the Larue is to buy an M1A
You can never be too rich, too good looking, or too well armed.

GabeC

I may be partial, but I will cast my vote for the LR308. I have owned several and found each to be reliable and very accurate.

My Current Setup:
LR308 AP4
CAA G27 Pistol Grip
Jerry Miculek Muzzle Brake (LOUD! But really does what it is supposed to perfectly)
YHM Gas Block w top rail & bottom bayonet adapter
PNS Anti Walkout Pins
Larue SPR-E Mount with Offset Rail
Docter Mini Red Dot on Larue Offset Mount
Burris 3x12x50mm EuroDiamond Scope with Ballistic Plex reticule
Timney 3lb Single Stage Skeletonized Trigger

Using both factory mags and PMAGS I haven't had any problems. And unlike some other .308s, it isn't finicky about ammo.

A moral compass provides a basis for making decisions; an action is good or bad, right or wrong when viewed in the light of the individual's moral bearing. If no moral compass exists for the individual, then decisions and actions are made on the basis of purely subjective thoughts. This leads to "If it makes me happy, or makes me feel good, or if it's something I simply want to do, then it is right and good."

Thank you, I was about to post that the 6.8 is a fairly new invention. People have been on a quest to find something that is an intermediate rou d between the 308 and the 5.56 for some time now. It will be interesting to see where many of the rounds end up in the future.

Sly -- I seem to remember a night after a Myakka AS where you were rather vocal on the ins and outs of southern Florida feral hog hunting.   I don't seem to recall any references to the use of 223's when it came to big, ticked-off, hybrid feral hogs.   However, I do seem to remember discussions about projectiles in the 30 caliber range that weighed over 150 grains.  Am I mistaken?   ::)   See ya.

I was wondering the same thing - for efficiency, versatility, and knock-down power 7.62 is my preference.

I have nothing against an AR15 - I own a highly accurate Fulton Armory A2 match-conditioned service rifle (it shoots better than I can hold  :wb:) and a very effective Rock River M4 for CQB/3-Gun, but would rather shoot one of my M14s instead of an AR10.  :---

In the near future I going to be able to afford an AR-10 variant in .308 Winchester. What do you like and why? At the top of my list right now are:

LMT 308 Modular Weapon System
LaRue Tactical OBR

Don't worry too much about the budget and feel free to suggest anything in or close to the category so long as it is really worth the money.

I realize this could be a heated topic and hope we all keep it civilized. :) I really am looking for information to make a decision on.

I personally have experienced a lot of Malf's with this particular round,It's expensive,I go to the 30-06.
.308 in a Garand,is great if someone else foots the bill. The ones on the AR style platform seem to Jam a lot(IMHO)
I like the7.62x54,PSL,Mostly needs to be cheap available and powerful enough to be effective out to 1000yrds.
The malf's were when I was just learning and I think the guy next to me was too he reloaded and got an squib,I too have since done this with my .223.
Contrary to my forum name, I am not a real strong advocate of the .223,We (AMERICA)have not won a war since it inception.
Ol'Fudd you are correct Sir,I would not hunt a hog down here with a .223 all though I have,On hogs I have this to say, growin' up a hog was 160-200lbs.Now, 320lbsers are avg. size and they are now very deadly beasts.

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard, the 5.56 round has nothing to do with winning or loosing wars, the politicians that tie our hands on the other hand do. And two we have done pretty well with firepower superiority since we adopted the 5.56. Granted I'm sure plenty of people have heard me say it's a fantastic round for killing things, but horribly bad for letting them know they are dead.

It's all good, don't quite understand though why you dont like 308 because some guy reloaded a bunch of it and had issues I don't think should reflect on the rou d but your friends reloading skills. I don't think the military would use a round that jams and misfires all the time. Hock up the cash to buy some factory made ammunition and then tell me you don't like it after you hit targets at 1600 meters.

I don't necessarily think any thing ill of the .308 round,
the only negatives are availability and price.
The Ar platforms in my limited experience have been finicky.
I am priced right out of this one, as I said earlier as long as someone else foots the bill.

I don't understand about advalablility or price, you can find 308 everywhere, and it's about 65 cents a round. Any NATO round (9mm, 5.56, and 308) can be found anywhere. Also to answer your question both, I even had a 50 BMG in my arsenal, but didn't have the opportunity to use it other than the range.

Sly -- just teasin you 'cause you're fun to tease.  Certainly no malice meant.  Now, for you folks who reload 308 (and other calibers  too) I want to share a Nosler website where you can buy "over-runs" and blemished projectiles at around half price for some good stuff.  Stuff comes and goes, so when you see what you want/need, jump on it.

The site is www.shootersproshop.com.  I figure that by using nosler over-runs/blems, I can reload 308 using their competition projectiles for a total cost at about $0.25 per round.  They also sometimes offer their hunting projectiles at deep discounts too.

Now I've gotten some experience in loading 308s, I've had NO malf's for any reason for the last couple of years.  The biggest hurtle I had to learn is that with gas guns, headspacing (setback) of the shoulder was my biggest variable for reliability.  Once I got this figured out, no malf's.  Hope all this helps.

See ya.

Heh, NEMO (New Evolution Military Ordinance) recently released what is basicly an AR-10 platform chambered in .300 Win Mag.  The thing's built like a tank and supposedly shoots pretty nice.  It's a nice rifle, but not the most pratical; in a semi-auto platform, a .300 Win Mag's accuracy is going to diminish long before the catridge's potential does.

Here's the pic of ItsanSKS with it at the NRACon in St. Louis earlier this year.

It would be interesting if Larue comes out with an OBR chambered in 300 win mag. For a long range gas blow back that's the only one I would get.

I handled the new Armalite AR-10 National Match at vendors row at Camp Perry yesterday.. I haven't warmed up to the AR-10's as of yet but I gotta say I'm VERY impressed. A4 configuration, all the bells and whistles one would expect on a service match rifle, and a hefty 11.5 lbs.. Developed with AMU, so I'm thinking this one has potential...

I also drilled and tapped the handguard to install a YHM 3" rail so I could use my Atlas bipod. Typically it has an MS3 sling on it, but was trying out the Bushmaster single point that locks on the castle nut. Pretty nice sling for the money.
