Well, the shop sold the first 10/22 takedown I handled.

today, at lunch, I played hooky and swung by for some window shopping and...

takedown # 2 was on the rack

320.63 out the door, will try and test it at the Appleseed this weekend

Happy Patriots' Day to all

The one I handled seemed pretty solid but I found it hard to justify the extra $130 just because it broke into two pieces. I'd rather use that money to purchase tech sights, sling swivels, a USGI sling, and some ammo.

But..... let us know how it worked. I may just end up with one after all!

Handled one at a gunshow this evening. Guy was asking $300... It's neat if you've got the extra dough, but I think I'll hold off to get that Ruger Scout rifle.... BeSwift

Ladies and Gents,
Suspect (though have not formally asked) that Ruger will  make Take Down 10-22 part of Instructor Purchase Program (unless in too short supply, in which case we'll wait a year) for RHIs (with copy of credentials) @ appx 1/3 off MSRP.  Know the regular 10-22s list around $300 and "our" price is just under $200...

I just purchased one yesterday.

It will end up doing duty as a loaner LTR of last resort, though I mostly bought this for myself as a "motorcycle" rifle.  The take-down element to it sold itself to me.  Feels 10 times as solid as the Henry AR-7 or Marlin Papoose method of building a takedown rifle.

Currently sporting a Millet Red Dot I had lying around, but it will eventually get either TechSights or Lyman Aperture sights.

Slinging it will be interesting... doesn't come with sling swivels installed and there is no access to the hollow area of the buttstock.  I don't think I want to use a course-thread wood-style sling stud, and if you use machine screw sling studs then you need to get a nut and washer into the recess of the stock.  I hear that the butt plate is glued in with a soft glue that can be cut through with a razorblade, granting access to the stock interior.

And the final product of the rifle, slung up under tension, should be interesting.  I don't think I want to loan it out a bunch just so it doesn't get the barrel socket at the receiver all stretched.

Reddot

Slinging it is no problem; I set one up for my brother a couple of weeks ago. I used the Uncle Mike set for the standard 10-22; had to relieve some of the material within the barrel band so it would hold tight for the front and just drilled a pilot hole in the plastic stock about 2 inches in front of the butt plate for the rear.  After that, just screwed the stud in so it lined up to take a 1-1/4" swivel. Put the swivels on and added the GI sling.  He Shot a 197 on his very first AQT with it.

My first real rifle purchase and shot Rifleman on the second day. Yes, I took it down between days.

I sighted it in at home before I added the following item so I could add a sling. I had not yet added a connecting point on the butt.
ProMag PM185 Ruger 10/22 and Carbine Tactical Barrel Band http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003BAAJVG/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00

The only time I had to sight it in again was after I removed the scope, added LocTite and replaced the scope.

Congratulations on earning your patch.

I saw a TD on the line a couple weeks ago.  Basically the shooter bought it and then brought it to an Appleseed. No swivels, factory sights. We rigged him up best we could but he struggled with it.  I am pretty sure the next shoot he comes to it will have sights/scope and a proper sling set up.   If I didn't already have 5 10/22s I would buy one.

I love my Takedown. Judging by the interest/questions I've gotten at a few appleseeds, others are interested in them too. They are so handy when tossed into the bag, to haul around, and easy to know the rifle is safe :-) Mine is not exactly stock as I modified a revolution stocks for it:

since then I added Bravo Mil sights and cut down the factory stock and painted it up so my 10 year old daughter can use it at her first appleseed this weekend:

She will not use the scope (better eyes than the ole man, needs to learn on irons).

For those that don't know, Ruger has just come out with a special Olympic US Shooting team edition available through Talo which I think is kinda cool:

Prairie Eagle

Well, the wife wanted her own rifle after going to her first Appleseed, so I made a deal with her that she's gotta keep going to shoot the score with it. She looked around and latched onto the USA Shooting special edition.

So a few days later another takedown in the family:

These takedowns are rather handy to haul around, fits in my bin with my other gear for a shoot. Only problem I've found so far is they seem to multiply like rabbits  ;D

There was one on the line at the last AS here in Blackfoot ID and I had trouble trying to work the OEM irons in for the lady that was shooting it. I got one a couple of weeks ago and was not impressed with the accuracy and irons.  I put the scope rail and a red dot on it and got it to shoot one hole at 25M with Eley Sport 40 gr ammo only.  I put a Nodak Spud sight set on it yesterday and just sighted it in again at 25M.  As before, it shoots 3 or 4" groups with other ammo and puts 10 of the Eley Sport rounds in one 1/2MOA hole.  I replaced the trigger group with an excellent Black Maxx from Hornet Products and it's easy to mount sling swivels.  I'm very happy with it as long as I feed it Eley Sport.

Good info Hezekiah O0
I was guessing which AS instructor would be the 1st to  add $800 worth of modifications to this neat little rifle . I thought of you and "critical mass " as the most likely candidates .  ;D

$800? Not even close! ;) The Hornet Products trigger group is a real bargain at $130 (with a $30 core rebate that makes it a super trigger at a great net price of $100) and the Nodak Spuds are only another $100. O0

I do have to admit to being really surprised at the significant ammo preference shown by the rifle.  I'll have to spend some more time testing my other 10/22s as I've always considered "vanilla" bulk ammo sufficient for 4MOA in most and have seen a real difference between choices.

Check out the difference in grouping for these four 5-shot strings with my Ruger takedown.  Before we get sidetracked with "talking targets" all four strings were shot with the rifle solidly sandbagged.

Sandbagged?

Don't the bags get in the way of your sling? @)

keep us posted on your ammo studies and modifications with regard to MOA ^5

I am curiuos as to the best groups fired w/o sandbag rests and if point of impact changes with field  positions ?
