Which Rifle for first AS?

I have two Rifles.
A Mossberg Plinkster with Techsights and an AR with an Olympic 20" HBAR upper and a nice Trigger. A2 type setup.  Also have a .22 conversion Bolt for the AR

I naturally feel more comfortable on the AR.
It is entirely possible that I am just doing it wrong :)

My plan was to bring the AR as a 'backup' as it seems that the Plinkster is more conducive to the Techniques.
Is that true?

Foppish Dandy

I'm no expert on the two rifles particularly, but it sounds like you've got a pretty solid set-up on the Mossberg. I'd probably go with that and bring the AR as a backup in case you absolutely hate shooting the other.

I'm also thinking that by shooting the rifle you're a bit less comfortable with, you're probably less likely to fall into any bad shooting habits you may have developed prior to the event.

My two-cents... whatever that's worth. :)

I will side with "Dandy" on this one.  My wife had no trouble shooting Rifleman with her Mossberg 702 Plinkster.  It should serve you fine.  Be sure to get sling swivels on it (an easy add on, if you haven't).  Accuracy will probably be more consistent with the Mossy than with a convertor and a single MOA additional error can spoil a great target for a new shooter.  It may have been done, but I have not witnessed anyone shooting rifleman with a drop in conversion.  If your Appleseed oportunity includes centerfire, be sure to bring that AR out.

As this is your first Appleseed, and much of what you will be taught will be new to you, I would suggest the Mossberg Plinkster. It has been my experience as well as that of other instructors that drop in conversions are 'iffy' at best.
This being the case, and as you are developing a foundation, I would strongly recommend sticking with the more reliably accurate Plinkster. You will have enough to figure out as it is, w/o compounding the issue with not knowing reliably whether you, or your rifle are the cause of dis-appointing performance.
If you have not yet purchased the conversion, I would further recommend that you hold off and either use the money you would spend on it for ammo and practice, practice, practice. Once you have shot rifleman you will be in a better position to evaluate performance of various platforms.
You might also consider saving your money for a 'dedicated upper'. These are designed for the 22LR and have the proper bbl dimensions and rate of twist for the 22.
Have fun, relax, listen and learn.
Best of luck!

Correct me if I misread your first post, but it sounds like the AR is a .223/5.56 upper with .22LR conversion bolt option, not a dedicated .22LR upper. If that's the case, just know that that three-thousandths of an inch make a HUGE difference when it comes to the accuracy of the rifle. Human hair is less than that, and if you think about having a gap the size of a human hair between the bullet and the barrel as it travels down the bore I think you'll see why it matters. I strongly recommend either getting a dedicated upper if the AR is a more comfortable platform, or using the Mossberg. As GE pointed out, the rifling twist is wrong as well.

I still say go with the Mossberg... However, if you do feel the need to shoot the AR, why bother with the .22 conversion? Just shoot the .223... bit more expensive but it'll be more accurate than shooting with the .22 conversion.

To clarify
My AR is a 5.56 and I also have a conversion bolt for it.
I just for the conversion so I could get more trigger time.
Also can shoot it at indoor ranges.

My AS (Smyrna) does allow Centerfire but I haven't heard if there are long ranges there.
But yes....will bring both.

Thanks

Just My My 2 cents start with the Mossberg, for Saturday until You shoot rifleman, then switch.

Use the AR to shoot Your second event or Next AQT after Your Rifleman score. Then after Your second event Having scored rifleman at Two events You can take an Orange Hat, and Pay Your Debt Forward.

The bolt 802 or Semi 702 Plinkster?

My vote is Plinkster either way.  Get a sling on it and enjoy that rifle.  I posted my high score with the 801 half pint plinkster (bolt) with homemade stock extensions.
Last evening, it occurred to me that when a defender of Liberty is called home, their load lands upon the shoulders of the defenders left behind. Just as the Founders did their duty for Liberty, every subsequent generation must continue their work lest Liberty perish. As there is no way for the remaining adults to take on the work of those that die, we must pass the ideals and duties on to the children. -PHenery

I have the 702 Plinkster.
tech Sights, GI Sling and 5 mags.
The trigger isn't terrible....
But the CMC Trigger on mr AR is excellent.

The weight of my AR is kind of a "Bandaid" to bad structure (my suspicion anyway).  It is easier to hold it still.
I also find the nose to the charging handle index easier to hit consistently.

I do want to master a traditional rifle hold.
Will keep working on the plinkster

it honestly sounds like if you go with a open mind and listen to and absorb what is being taught it will fix most of your complaints with the mossberg.  the trigger isn't a huge deal at all once you learn proper trigger control and as far as the same sight picture with your nose to the charging handle on the ar....if you follow the steps and get proper turkey neck and cheek weld you will be good to go.  take them both and shoot them both. just learn the fundamentals and you will do fine
