Well, it may have taken me twelve hours, but I finally finished the prototype for my custom rifle sling. Pictures are coming in the next post.

I think I've worked out a lot of the kinks and measurements... the next one will be even better. I'm curious to get everyone's feedback on this. I know it's difficult to give a lot of opinions without actually testing the unit, but I'm anxious to hear feedback on how the community thinks I can improve on the design.

Right now, the hardware is not what I will be using in my final unit. It's simply what I had on hand until the better shaped pieces come in the mail.

Images are in the posts below... Let me know your thoughts!

Sorry for the delay... Images keep timing out. Unfortunately I don't have any with me using the sling as I don't have anyone here to take the photo.

How do you adjust it going between sitting & prone, or shirt vs heavy coat?
Also why the mounting stud in the pistol grip? Wouldn't you get a lot more support in standing with a hasty (or hasty hasty) runing the strap over your chest, to the butt stock.

Definitely! ... once I get all the final kinks worked out and figure out my costs. I'll put your name on the list for the first production run. :) Depending on what supplier I end up using, they'll probably run from $30-$40.

It's not super-visible in the pictures, especially because I have it adjusted as short as it will go... However, on the cuff-assembly there's a strap adjustment up towards the clip. The diameter of the cuff is dynamic based on the tension of the assembly which is adjusted by adjusting the length of the strap. Additionally, the main sling-body is fully adjustable at the nylon end.

The sling stud is in the pistol grip because that's where it was when I picked up the rifle. I haven't purchased new studs yet for this particular rifle and I don't want a hole in the bottom of my rifle that will let water and dirt in. Planning on capping it off by cutting a Ruger logo out of a sheet of heavy aluminum (or whatever I happen to have) and insetting it in the wood. Until then, I've got a sling stud in the pistol grip.

Those were my first thoughts. Sam, looks great and I like that  braided para cord. I too like to tinker but usually grinding on the rifles! :) Slung up tight, is that braid going to be spongy? Is it going to stretch/settle loosening up over time? Keep us informed on how it goes....O.L.

Explained the adjustments in my above post. With the way I'm doing the weave, there's little to no stretch in the paracord. It may stretch a bit with use over time, but I slung it up pretty tight and didn't notice any sponginess or give in the weave.

As a side note, I've been tinkering a bit myself... Building my own custom 10/22 target rifle from scratch. Well, at least as close to scratch as I can get without machining the parts myself.

Hey Everyone,

After taking the learnings from building my first prototype and finally getting my better materials in the mail, I've created by V2 sling prototype. Here are the pictures!

I'm also thinking of having a bit of a contest to name the product... prolly give a free sling to the winner. We'll see...

What kind of braid is that? Doesn't look like anything I recognize.

Good job... Now off to think of names!

A moral compass provides a basis for making decisions; an action is good or bad, right or wrong when viewed in the light of the individual's moral bearing. If no moral compass exists for the individual, then decisions and actions are made on the basis of purely subjective thoughts. This leads to "If it makes me happy, or makes me feel good, or if it's something I simply want to do, then it is right and good."

Not totally sure what the correct name is... I think it's a Wide Solomon's Bar/Weave.

Call it the "DMS"  Designated Marksman Sling.... gotta have a 3 letter designation.  They are the most successful.  ie. USA, IBM, NEC, ect.  Agencies all want the 3 letter; FBI, CIA, etc.  And of course who would forget our very own LTR, IIT, blah, blah, blah.  Oh. and let me know how I can get one when you are ready.

What about the Paracord Marksman Sling?  ;D How would that 3-letter designation work for you? I like the idea though... I'll keep it in mind!

I definitely will... just figuring out the last few supply details and saving up to buy some initial wholesale stock. I'll have a website up shortly!

Paracord Marksman Sling doesn't abbreviate to something we want associated with rifles, no?

How about 550 Marksman's Sling, or 5MS for short? Throw a number in to mix it up. Figured out a approximate price yet? I might be interested to have one to play with.

Ooh... I'm liking that idea... 5MS (550 Marksman's Sling) for the full rig and 5CS (550 Carry Sling) for the sling only (no attachments for the cuff).

Right now, it's looking like the price breakdown will be as follows:

Full Rig (Metal Hardware) - $49.99
Full Rig (Plastic Hardware) - $39.99
Sling Only (No Attachments for Arm Cuff) - $29.99
Replacement Cuff Assembly (Metal Hardware) - $24.99
Replacement Cuff Assembly (Plastic Hardware) - $19.99

You'll have the option for custom colors for the straps and the two colors of paracord.
Additionally, if you choose the metal hardware, you'll have the option of choosing custom color for the hardware. The unit will come with Uncle Mike's (or similar) style swivels. If you already have a special set of swivels you'd like to use, ship them out to me and I'll knock $5 off the price.

I'm trying to keep prices as low as possible, but I don't think it'll be going any lower than that. Gotta be able to make a little bit of money to pay for all that rimfire ammo I need :)

I'm also going to be offering free shipping for Appleseeders in the contiguous United States. :) Gotta give a nod to my peoples!

As a note, I'll be testing out the sling at an Appleseed shoot this weekend... Will let everyone know the results, but after I get some good field testing in, I'll be ready to start making final production versions.

Well, I was hoping to shoot my rifleman score this weekend with my sling. Alas, I did not succeed. However, I did manage a very respectable 195, 201 and 202. I'll consider this a fairly successful test of the sling.

I have a few adjustments to make so the final production version will be a bit more comfortable. However, I think I'm in a really good place with the sling.

Will let you know when I'm ready to start taking orders! :)
