Rules for improving your shooting.

1. Don't waste time at the range working on things you can practice at home.

       a. Practice positions at home, include transitions for best effect.
       b. Practice dryfire at home, include simulated mag changes, npoa acquisition, etc.
       c. Practice failure drills at home. Know what a panic mag is and how to use it.
       d. Learn what visualization is and use it.

2. Have a plan for your range time and follow it.

3. Keep both a data book and a performance journal.
    a. The data book should contain your sight settings, location, ammo data, basic weather,
shot plots and shot calls. This information can be important to keep track of shot
        counts, barrel wear, etc.
    b. Your performance journal should include a written plan of your shooting goals, your
training process, and your outcomes. Actually your performance journal can be used
as a tool to help in achieving a variety of goals including professional and personal.
But we are talking "Skill Sets of shooting."

4. Have an overall plan for achieving your goals. Research what others have done to
prepare for and achieve their goals. The internet is your friend in this regard. PM me
for more specific goal related resources.

5. Train hard. Successful people train hard and then perform easy.

Hey, Mike

What is a "panic mag"?  What, how, why, and when do you use it?

Harry

Harry,

It is actually a "Keep from panicking mag."

It is a third mag prepped (particularly for RF stages). That may have a few rounds or be full. The idea is that if you have mag problems, failures to feed etc, run out of ammo, etc you can switch to the panic mag and avoid panicking.

We should have the same kind of planning and reflection for our teaching methodology.
"It is amazing to watch the intricate dance of the Indiana instructors playing off each other's strengths. No ego involved. Just doing what needs to be done by the person best suited to do it to give the shooters what they need." - Miki
