Hi: I can't seem to find this info anywhere...What size scope mounts/rings do I need for the Marlin 795 .22cal rifle? I know the receiver is grooved for a scope mount, but nowhere do they state the size...Thanks a lot...

it is a standard 3/8" dovetail. you will of course need 1" rings for a 1" scope etc.

before you begin closely inspect the rail to make sure it is undercut as sometimes they get out with out being cut.
PLEASE DON'T STROKE THE EGO.

Would you recommend  a one piece mount or two rings for the 795? Thanks,

Steve

I've been writing a guide to mounting scopes, it is in the trial board:

http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=22817.0

It covers ring/mount hight and placement for eye relief.
While it is not yet complete (still comparing testing suggestions) it is a very streight forward method to determine placement.

I moved the thread to where you can see it.
They have men amongst them who know very well what they are about, having been employed as Rangers against the Indians and Canadians and this country being much covered with wood, and hilly, is very advantageous for their method of fighting. . . . ".  Lord Percy

Sounds like New Englanders to me.

I have set up three 795s with scopes with no problems after initial trouble shooting on my personal 795.  I used the rather inexpensive (+/- $10.00) .22/Air Gun rings you can get at WalMart and Dick's.  They are made to clamp directly to the dovetail grooves on the receiver.  For whatever reason the scopes tend to "walk" in the receiver grooves.  This is easy to cure with some loctite ( I actually use cheap fingernail polish).  After you determine the correct position of the rings just loosen them up enough to put some loctite or finger nail polish in the groove where the rings clamp on.  I took the added step to use a small punch to stake or dimple the groove directly behind the claws on both rings.  I don't know that this is necessary but adds a little insurance against the mounts moving.  After several thousand rounds the rings are still exactly where they were mounted.  I am sure there are other methods but this has worked for me on the ones I have set up with no failures to date.

... what counts ... is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our bursts nor the smoke we make.  ... it is the hits that count.

Thanks for all of the great advice...Sure wish the eyes were 30 years younger!

I recommend getting rings that have a vertical allen screw in addition to the horizontal ones that hold it in the dovetail.  I've had the best of luck with them.  I use something like this. http://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/AirForce_1_Rings_Medium_9_5_13_5mm_Dovetail/507  but I hear the one piece rings are the fo' shizzle.  http://www.pyramydair.com/a/Accessories/Mounts_bases_rings_levels_and_scope_stops/1-piece_mounts/3_8_and_11mm_dovetails/1_rings/54
Ignorance may be bliss, but it's not a virtue.

One piece mounts by UTG are what I have on two rifles. These have the vertical screw in them to help with the walking issues some people experience. I would recommend that you check out a forum called rimfirecentral.com. There are a long discussion posts about mounting scopes on the Marlin 795 / 60 rifles.
