Marlin 795 Ammo Question

Picked up my new Marlin 795 rifle yesterday...Beautiful...
Now I have a question...(I know this type of question is "iffy", but here goes)...Could some of you who shoot 795's share with me what ammo brand seems to shoot best for you in the 795? I know every rifle is different, but I also know that some rifles just will not shoot certain brands of ammo...I need to purchase some bricks of 22 ammo to start getting the 795 sighted in, but I don't want to buy junk that will give me trouble from the start...Thanks for the advice...

I too have a new Marlin 795.  I attended my first Appleseed July 23 and 24, 2011.

I began by shooting the Federal Champion Value Pack I had purchased for the event.  It's a 36 grain, 1260 fps, hollow core, copper jacketed round.  I suffered numerous "Stove Pipes".

The Instructor suggested I use some of their Federal Champion Target Auto Match ammo.  This ammo was a 40 grain, 1200 fps, solid core, lead projectile.  It shot perfectly in my 795.

Good luck!

Most .22's preform well with a healthy diet of CCI. I have found success with the Winchester 555 round boxes or the 333 round boxes. I would stay away from the Walmart Value pack. You are correct though, experimenting is the only way to truly find out. I would suggest going to your next appleseed and borrow a couple different brands, I am sure no one would mind letting you try out 10 rounds and go and see what works best for you rather than buying 100 rounds to find out the first round jams.

Best of Luck

+1 CCI Mini Mag

Indiana does a lot of Winterseeds in freezing or wet weather and CCI mini Mag had the best track record throughout the yet.  Its accurate and has the punch to eject clean.  Fiocchi 40 gr. high velocity also does really well for slightly less money.

You'll have just as many differing answers on this question as you will on 'what is the best rifle to set up a LTR?"

My experience (I own 2 795's) having used Winchester bulk (555 and 333), Federal bulk, Remington bulk, and CCI products is:
I gave/threw away two boxes of Winchester because of FTF's and stovepipe issues with MY Marlins.

I stopped using Remingtons because of shot group issues with MY Marlins and about a 1 in 70 FTF rate.

With Federal bulk I had about a 1 in 100 FTF rate and I had inconsistant shot groupings; maybe due to inconsistency in load, maybe due to me.

With CCI MiniMag I have very few FTF's (maybe 1 in 500) and my shot groups are consistent.  CCI is THE brand that I run through my Marlins now, even though the cost of the MiniMags is almost double the cost of the Bulk ammos.

The only good answer to your question is: "Take several boxes of different brands to the range and test them on your rifles yourself.  Everyone will have different results with different brands because environmental factors (heat, cold, etc) come into play.  Once you find a brand that you're comfortable with (low FTF rate, jam rate, and consistant groupings) spend  more money on that brand than the others."
Your version of "ineffective" does not necessarily reflect the truth....
Having been "ineffectively" taught to the Rifleman Standard and having been "ineffectively" taught to teach others to the Rifleman Standard, I believe I prefer the "ineffective" over the other choice.

Ihave had good results with 40grn"Blazer" .

It seems to work well in a variety of self loading RF ,including handguns.

An added advantage of "Blazer" is the price --$20 for 500rds or about $130-$140 per case .

As to original question , works great in our 795's

That's one of those tough questions.

While I don't have a 795 I can tell you it seems as if owners of the 10/22 see different results in what their rifle 'likes.'

It appears to me that even different batches of the same manufacturer have issues. I never liked Federal too much in my 10/22 until I got some old stuff from a friend. It was 80's manufacture. Best stuff I'd ever seen.

When I first got my 10/22 nothing seemed to work very well. I remember thinking 'dangit, I got a factory reject.' After 1000 rounds or so it broke in. Stiff springs and such I believe. Now it likes a whole lot of different brands.  :)

Thanks for all of the good, common sense advice...Going to buy a few miscellaneous boxes and try them out...

My 795 out of the box was a nightmare, caught 1/10 empties in the closing bolt, misfeeds from full mags, ect..
I really was regretting not springing for the 10/22. I though it was ammo, tried a bunch of .22 stock I had, & only one was slightly better than the lot. Thinking my old ammo stock was to blame, picked up fresh ammo, and the same results. Researching on RimfireCentral.com, I tweaked the 'Ejector horn' to match an example posted in the Marlin forum, then smoothed the feed ramp casting line a bit. Runs like a champ now on FED550s, shells always fly clear & 0 misfeeds.
Good Luck.

My 795 has never failed with CCI Mini Mag 40 grain. It will shoot a 238 when I do my part with that ammo. Federal red bulk has the same track record, though not as accurate.

40 gr Mini Mags have never let me down from below zero to ninety plus degrees and I have not cleaned this rifle in many many seeds. Restless calls CCI 40 grain Mini Mags "Rifle Candy". I would have to agree after several thousand rounds, when a shooter's ammo fails, I hand them CCI.

I've never seen a .22 that didn't like CCI Mini-Mags . . .

I have 2 - 795s.  Thousands of rounds through each.  I've tried a bunch of ammo, and the best bang for the buck (pun intended) is the 525 round Federal Blue box for me.  I recently brought home over 2600 rounds of the stuff  - should last the rest of the year :)  It also runs great in my 2 - 10/22s as well,

I always keep a selection of .22 in an ammo can I bring with me.  I keep Federal red and blue box, Remington Golden bullets, American Eagle, Winchester, CCI Tactical and of course if all else fails, my stash of Mini-Mags.

+1 for CCI mini-mags.
My 795 LTR loaner also shoots Aguila yellow-box 40gr lead and Remington golden bulk 36 gr JHP well enough for a few folks to earn the patch in the past few months.   O0

CCI mini mags or Federal Automatch for mine.

AmericaStandsStrong

Mine will eat anything I put in it, other then Remington...

CCI's are very accurate in my 795. Then again my gun is picky on  the type of ammo. I admit I am a slave to my gun, it has to be perfectly clean and have the exact ammo it wants. Winchesters bulk though is spits and even turns backwards sometimes. Definitely go with CCI.
