Project Appleseed

Hi: I wanted to introduce myself as a new Kansas member of RWVA...(Got my membership card in the mail on Friday!) I am a retired US Army veteran of 24 years in the Army Nurse Corps and a veteran of Operation Just Cause (Panama) and Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm...Currently, I am employed part time as a registered nurse in an eye surgery center here in Garden City, currently the Dust Bowl of Kansas...I am not new to shooting, but haven't done much since getting out of the Army...Got to be rusty...I am planning on attending the Appleseed in Eureka 8-9 October...If things go well, I hope to also involve my spouse and grandson in the fun...
I have lots of questions about the event...Currently I have a 20+ year old 10/22 and am planning on purchasing a Marlin 795 for my wife and grandson...I am used to shooting iron sights in the military, but I notice that some folks use scopes...Is there a preference of one over the other? Can a person qualify for the rifleman Patch using a scope? I plan on sighting-in my rifles over the next few weeks, assuming the heat comes down below boiling!

Col Z, welcome aboard and grab a bucket. 
There are a lot of reviews and discussion on 795's here on the forum... just type in "795" in the search bar.  Also, someone just posted a link to a video by 'nutnfancy' reviewing the + - of the 795 (you should be able to find it on the "unread post" page if you haven't already seen it (I believe it's titled 'shoutout to Appleseed' or something like that). 
I own two 795's, both with scopes (I have progressive bifocals and the wife has TRIFOCALS).  If you don't scope them, make sure you at least install Tech-Sights as soon as possible; the ramp sights from factory suck.   You'll also need to buy a sling and at least one extra magazine for each  (rifle, scope, sling, and extra magazines will still cost you less than a 10/22 new in box).

If your vision allows you to focus on the front sight, open sights work fine. If you need some help bringing that blurry front sight into focus try a scope or shooting with reading glasses (generally lower power than you would normally use).

What you need is a sight system that is adjustable and repeatable. That makes scopes and tech sights popular for Appleseed.

You can qualify with either iron sights or scope. I have a 10/22 with Tech Sights and a Remington 597 with scope....just depends on what works for you. As the guys posted above, Tech Sights are a TREMENDOUS improvement over OEM iron sights, which generally suck. Most of my centerfire rifles have scopes on them too...

I'd go with the 795, a couple of extra mags and either scope it or go with Tech Sights. With that $25 rebate they have going, it's a pretty good buy.

Just got back from the local gun guy...Did a heck of a trade of an old, no name, beat to heck .22 revolver toward the Marlin 795...With the $25 rebate, I will grease in under $50...Happy as a clam at high tide...Rifle will be in on Thursday...Now my next decision is sights...I am familiar with the Tech Sights, but I must admit that a good red dot appeals to me...With the better red dots, the recticle/dot can be really fine and precise...A good friend shoots a red dot and does great...Don't know how it would work for Appleseed, but, given the eyesight issue, it might be a plausible alternative...Time for a nap and some thought...Opinions welcome...Man, this is fun already and I haven't fired a shot!

I haven't had much experience using a red dot on a rifle, but I'm sure someone else would give us their opinion? I would THINK it'd be OK with a red dot, as long as it's easily adjustable for windage/elevation...

The answer will depend on the configuration and size of the Red Dot's Reticule.

The course of fire will include shooting at 1 inch squares at 25 meters. Which is 4 moa.

Many of the inexpensive Red dots have dots which are 4 moa or larger, which will block out  our targets. Make sure to pick one with a 1 or 2 moa dot/reticule dot or a cross hair.

That's what I was wondering about....the size of the dot. The one I tried must have been a 4MOA dot...covered the 400 yd target.

For the scope you mentioned, would you recommend a one piece mount or two rings?
