Guess I owe this thread an update dealing with my non-dominant (left) attempts (see previous post - #29 & #5  http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=18329.msg148694#msg148694).

I gave this an attempt back in Janurary, just before most of us got hit with one of the "big ice"  events of this winter.  Didn't realize how quickly a person can get out of shape!!!  I struggled to get into a good prone position.  Disclaimer:  I had just gone through a knee surgery, and had not been doing much of anything.

Second thing I discovered - I can't see the front sight with this small aperture now.  So, me asks me, what happened?  I'm suspecting that the back exercise I mentioned in reply #22  (  http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=18329.msg154160#msg154160 ) might be the reason.  Will need to test this one for sure!

Third discovery - It's totally foreign, like I've never shot a rifle before!  I didn't expect this to be so difficult.  When I tried this deer hunting with a lever action, I did better with my non-dom, and it wasn't difficult at all, but I was seated in a ladder stand for that situation.  For this, I had to really concentrate on SHF and the 6 steps.  BTW, before I shot non-dom, I shot 3 targets dominant as a benchmark.  It was so bad due to eyesight AND being out of shape, that it was not a good benchmark from my way of thinking, therefore I've not bothered to make a comparison between the two.

Today's status:  I'm back to getting into position without problem, I've been doing my back exercises, so I hope to do this test again soon.  In the meantime, I put a scope back on (actually had to do 2 scopes - an unintentional lesson on scopes and their reliability!) and I'm back in the rifleman groove.  Learning my history :wb: and a 233 project have kept me pretty busy, but I hope to get back to this test/exercise soon.

My fix for my AR (M4 clone) was a little pricey, but worth it. I added an Aimpoint CompM4 red dot, same as the current and latest USGI CCO (Close Combat Optic). Now I can wear my glasses and shot well with zero magnification.

See my problem was real bad. Glasses on, one target, two front sights. Glasses off, one front sight, two targets.

With the CCO, one target, one dot, glasses on.
They have men amongst them who know very well what they are about, having been employed as Rangers against the Indians and Canadians and this country being much covered with wood, and hilly, is very advantageous for their method of fighting. . . . ".  Lord Percy

Sounds like New Englanders to me.

:o  Whoa, that's some serious stuff.  I'm glad that you found a solution, and I'd guess I'd pay the price too, if that's what it takes.  Worked at Miamisburg this weekend, and Gordon let me take a turn with his rifle. I think the back exercises are working, as I was able to see the front sight very clearly.  I'm going to get the Tech Sights back on the 10/22 in short order to be sure.

Good to see you back, Nickle.

This has been a great thread! I've been lucky to be able to shoot an aperture or open sight until I had a minor eye injury this past fall. Although the doctor said it was healed it left me with seeing a pyramid inside the rear aperture at about 2 o'clock. In light it's small but when it gets dim or overcast it is big enough to touch the top of the front sight.

I plan to go lefty but the aperture is egg shaped and the front sight is tilted to the orientation of the egg. I'm not going to give up on it, just going to do the best with what I've got. FWIW the open rear sight is okay.

A couple things. The adjustable iris is a good one as is the aperture with a smaller opening. One thing I saw years back was a guy had bored out the aperture on his issue M1 rear ap and threaded it to take a small threaded aperture of various sizes. The apertures were made from hex head cap screws, bored out to the bottom of the head where the hex bottomed out. He then made a set of them in different sizes about 8 in total IIRC.  The cap screws were less than 1/4-20, but big enough to get a nice hooded aperture that you could easily change for various light conditions. An o-ring on the threaded portion near the hood kept them from loosening and in place. Probably would require someone with a milling machine to do it well.. You could also file a notch in the outer edge of the hood to index your ap in the rear sight, would alleviate zero problems with different aps.

Williams also made an ap with a brass ring around the outer edge of the hood supposedly to gather more light. Never tried one but it might be time to start.

I think the dangerous old men were so because the front sight was about 4' away from their eye. And the bilberry. Did you ever see older guys have problems shooting civil war era muzzleloaders? That is why. You can focus on a sight further out more easily. Those with short barreled whatevers take note. You may not see the front sight on your carbine but on your M1 it might be another story. At least for a little while.

Keep the ideas coming, we're all getting older.

I put an ear plug on the bridge of my nose between the bridge of my glasses and the bridge of my nose , it place's the focul point of the glass's in the right place  upped my score alot ,,, Ok so I  try to find the cheapest easyest fix I can  works for me, try it it don't cost much.

Rifle used  as issued M-1 Garand ( ok so it has cardboard shimes under the trigger group what the heck it will shoot 1.7 moa  with good milsurp ammo as long as the nut behind the butt does his part).

either way, I say  O0 O0 O0

ps - Wade, I assume that you are a master of IAO, based on that mobile, elevated firing line you have.

I got a pair of Bob Jones shooting specific glasses for my astigmatism this year for Service Rifle competition,,,they work much better than a standard glass prescription for me.  I can see the front sight very clearly and the target a bitt fuzzy on my tech sights, NM CLE upper and my M1A NM.  For an astigantism, I think it was the best solution for me.  It would at least be worth calling him on the phone to discuss it, as he has a lot of experiance dealing with precision shooters.  For an astigmatism the glasses work far better than the diopter insert.
