Project Appleseed

This was a relatively small shoot with only 6 people. But it was still a good shoot.

Weather was nice with temps around 60 and sunny. Sunday morning was pretty cold though at about 24 degrees. Yeah, I know, it's much colder up north, but 24 was cold to me. Dang boots felt like they had ice cubes in them on Sunday morning.

Saturday morning started out with not one of the 3 preregistered people showing up. Yeah, they were of the 'freebie' type. So there we are standing around thinking dang, now what, we don't have any shooters. About 8:45 or so two vehicles pulled up and out piled 5 kids with their parents. The parents didn't shoot but the kids, Alex, Chris, John, TJ, and Emmanuel did. Then a walkon, Don, showed up too a bit later. So the shoot was on. Dang sure glad we didn't drive all that way for nothing.

We didn't give any Patches this weekend but we had one of the shooters, TJ, get a 202. But what a 202. He got 88 on the 4th stage!! The only reason he didn't get the patch was because he wasn't able to get off 2 shots on the 2nd stage. Rifle problems, you know how that goes.So the young man can definitely shoot.

Don, an older gentleman, probably could have shot well above 210 but had a prior commitment and had to leave early on Sunday. The man can shoot. We did a 'card the sights' drill and he got off three rounds that you could cover with a quarter. And without even seeing the target. You could say he is now a true believer in NPOA.

Saturday's instructor dinner was superb. Instead of going out somewhere we had dinner at Jesse's house. Jesse and his father in law, Yannif, made dinner for us. Yannif used to be a chef, not just a cook, at a high end establishment. And Jesse, he's not a cook. He's a chef too. We had some type of potato soup for appetizer. The main course was roast, ribs, sauerkraut, carrots, and brussel sprouts. And chocolate cake too. Yum. Words can't describe how good it was. And I'm not just trying to be nice here, it really was great.

Even better was the company and conversation around the dinner table. Jesse and his wife, Stephanie, Yannif and his wife Lynn, Chuck, and Frank all had a good time.

We had a new IIT show up for his first shoot. Frank signed up to be an IIT at our last Midland shoot. He was a great help and I sure am glad he stepped up. Thanks Frank, I'm sure I'll see you on the trail again soon.

Even the small shoots can be good. Glad Chuck stopped all that cold from making it down to us. Keep it up Brothers.

I was there at this shoot and was glad that I could get the few boys there that attended.It was short notice or it may have been different.I found the training to be exceptional and the instructors a pleasure to work with.These 5 boys learned more in two days then they have ever learned.The following weekend they shot a club shoot at steel from 40 to 100 yards.All of them placed.Our youngest shooter Colton ( was 3rd over all.So they did learn! And it showed. Being the Shooting Sports Committee Chair for the local BSA I was impressed enough and hope to include Apple Seed in our summer camp program this next summer.I hope to see some of you there ,Mike

Hey Mike, I'm glad to hear that the boys learned something. The boys were all really good kids too. Alex seemed to like the history too. I remember him hopping up and down after a story going "Yeah, Revolutionary War!!" I sure hope to see you and the boys out on the trail again. And tell the other Mike howdy for me. And thanks for what you and the other Mike do with the Boy Scouts. I believe that is another important thing to teach our younger generation. That and Appleseed.

Thanks Scuzzy,Mike and I and alot of others work hard at the scout thing.There is not much out there for them to learn values that will benefit them.Shooting was a reward for the boys when they did well.But like ducks to water they wanted more.I intend to do just that.Hopefully jess can get another shoot going soon,I am sure I can make that a full class with a little time notice.The ranch program summer camp may well end up being a shoot program.If all the pieces fall right. So far they are with many jumping on board for it.NRA basic rifle course ,Appleseed,hunters safety and a competition on friday.Sounds like 1000 rounds easily and lots of grinning faces.
