 AAR Mt.Vernon, KY. Nov  5-6  2010

We had the inaugural shoot at the Iwrin farm, and what a great weekend with family and friends it turned out to be. We had lots of young patriotic Americans on the line learning about our heritage and marksmanship. Saturday began with a cool crisp morning and a little sleet and drizzle in the cold KY. air. But that would not keep these patriots away everyone kept a great attitude and striving to become better acquainted with their rifles and their new found heritage. For lunch we were offered sandwiches, chips cookies and chatting with new friends. Lunch also brought us into the Irwin's home for our history lesson which Kentuckyjam did in her costume and gave the story first person. Then back out to the cold and firing the rifles. At the end of the day we ended up with 1 new Rifleman Reid, congratulations and on a bolt action too.

Sunday brought some snow and ice in places and the same teachable attitudes back on the line. A quick review and we were hammering out Riflemen and Riflewomen on the anvil of the AQT. The second AQT brought another Rifleman repeat before lunch Steve who also took the orange hat. Huzzah!! We had the same great lunch and hospitality and some more history inside where we could warm up a little.  Then it was back to the line and we had some great improvement across the board. Everyone was really trying it was showing in their scores. Victoria, Donna, Heather and Jonathan were really getting close. Then Leah and Olivia busted through for some Winterseed Rifleman patches. Huzzah!!

I know we could have gotten a few more but with darkness coming in and the weather getting colder again we had to finish the day with a redcoat. WOW we had some great numbers on the Redcoat targets too, everyone had improved so much over the weekend.  Then we talked kentuckyjam into just one more AQT and even though we did not get another Rifleman out of it. Everyone did show the Rifleman spirit by persisting, I was impressed!

It was an honor and truly a joy to be a part of this shoot.  I cannot wait to make the trip back to the hills and hollers around Renfro Valley again for the next shoot.

Special Thanks goes out to ShootsLikeaGirl and DrDug for allowing us to hold this great event at their home. Plus for all the work they did in preparing for the shoot. I will get the pics posted in a few.

Many thanks to the Irwins for hosting and getting so many patriots on the line!  O0  Thank you to all the families that came out to learn marksmanship and heritage together.  Thanks to Lawrence for traveling all the way in from North Carolina.  Your instruction and story telling made me want to be a student again.  And thanks to Mudcat and Milk&Cookies for coming in from Indiana to head into the sticks.  You make so many trips for Ky shoots and we appreciate it.

This was the coldest shoot I've been to so far, but the range was just beautiful.  I got one shot from the camera before the batteries died.  :'(  I look forward to getting back to Mt. Vernon...once it warms up.  ;D

Huzzah!!!

Thanks for the pics. It was good to see the Irwin clan again. Hello Victoria; keep at them targets! I'm sure Mom can remind you how to go about dry firing if you are a little fuzzy. Actually that might not be a bad idea for school curriculum ( I hear you know the teacher) ;)

I can't wait to get out there with my little one to see y'all. I hope that you are back on the schedule again soon.

Many thanks to Mudcat, Mild&Cookies, Kentuckyjam, Brdholman (right?), Lawrence, and the Irwins for my first Appleseed (of many I hope) and a great weekend. The structure was excellent. This was no random plinking session (Not that I expected it to be. Just sayin'!). You guys and gals ran a tight ship and it sure looked like everyone learned a lot.

My favorite part of the weekend was probably seeing families shoot together. There is something special about a mom and a dad and a youngster or several all side by side shooting and learning.

I hope to see some or all of you at another Appleseed in the not-to-distant future.

Thanks again!
