Not sure if anyone has posted about this yet, but I came across an article today that mentioned the Appleseed Project and contained a hyperlink to our site.  The article concerns an issue that is not new but has recently surfaced in other articles.  The issue relates to the South Korean government's desire to sell about 100,000 surplus M1 Garand and Carbine rifles into the United States market.  The Obama administration has been blocking this effort for some time now, citing in other articles I have read the increased risk of "gun accidents."

I am sharing this with everyone because the article I read today is also linked at infowars.com, which is a site that gets a heavy amount of Internet traffic.  Here are the links:

May I motion that we never, ever reference infowars.com, please?  It is under no circumstances a legitimate source of information.

ETA:  The author of that article is apparently David Kopel, found here:  http://volokh.com/author/davek/  although most of it is cribbed from the Korea Times.  I don't think Mr. Kopel is strongly affiliated with infowars.com but I could be wrong.

An ad hominem attack against a prominent website that simply linked to the article?  Okay... ::)

I have no problem with the article, nor its author.  I provided the original source above which is well worth reading.

I also think that we want to stay well clear of Alex Jones, for reasons that should be obvious.  If you want to know my reasoning, feel free to take it to PM.  I'm not trying to cause a fuss here.

I saw that article while searching for when all the M1 were going to be repatriated. :'( >:(

Opinion of Infowars varies. RWVA got a large boost in page viewers when is was talked about on AJ's show. Did those viewer numbers do us any good? I don't know, but it didn't seem to hurt.
Do we feel too legitimate for AJ now that we are on Fox? Many would argue the legitimacy of them.

Many times at an Appleseed, while talking of the broad sheet, I will mention the twisting of facts to have them portray a particular point of view.
I encourage everyone to watch and read from all sources. The truth is normally somewhere in between.

Just a quick follow-up concerning the author of the article, David Kopel.  It appears David Kopel was the counsel of record for the Independence Institute and filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court in Hellerhttp://davekopel.org/Briefs/07-290bsacreprintIntlLawEnforcementEduc&Trainers.pdf

Not a bad endorsement for Appleseed.

I like his characterization of Appleseed
Quotecivic responsibility organizations such as the Appleseed Project .

We are now a "civic responsibility organization", beats the snot out of what the NYT had to say.

Rocket Man,
You needn't feel too worried about us being tagged with Alex Jones.  We aren't likely to be on his show again, and I've already received enough flak from folks here over the appearance.

Hmm...that's unfortunate.  I first heard about the Appleseed Project on AJ's show a couple years ago ... it's what brought me to Appleseed.  Almost a year passed before I went to my first Appleseed because there weren't any local shoots in my area, but it stuck there in the back of my mind.  Who knows, it may have been you that I heard, Sam.

The kind of people who frequent infowars and listen to Alex Jones are usually very receptive to our message.  I know of some instructors who got involved in the program this way.  I say keep it up.

As far as whether it is a "legitimate source of information," I don't really consider any major media outlets to be legitimate sources of information, but I will take all the exposure we can get from them!  I don't see it hurting the program any more than it would hurt the program for us to get exposure from any other highly opinionated and controversial talk show host, such as Rush Limbaugh.

Sure, some people might associate us with the medium, and think that all Appleseeders believe that 9/11 was a conspiracy like Alex Jones does, or that Obama is a terrorist trying to destroy our country like Rush Limbaugh does, but many more will be interested in what they hear and come to a shoot.

But rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law,' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the right of an individual."

I came across this article a few days ago.

Read the main story, then the comments.  The last comment as of yesterday pretty well summed it all up, but pay attention to the citations given throughout regard the final disposal of these fine rifles.

The reason has been given (again) that our government is afraid the rifles might fall into the wrong hands.
