what about a LTR in 22MAG?

I have been seriously contemplating the past 3 days about ordering a 10/22 in .22 WMR.  Anyone have any thoughts on this little mean round?

how well does it shoot?  worth the extra $? etc...

I thought the whole concept of the LTR is that it provide an economical alternative.

For me, 22MAG isn't all that economical. If I've got the choice of buying ammo, 22MAG and 5.56 for the AR, I think I'd pony up the extra and buy the 5.56.

CDNN at one point had the exact CZ452 Varmint that I've been looking for, except it was chambered in 17HMR instead of 22LR. I passed, thinking "I won't go out and buy 17HMR ammo like I would 22LR".

I think I was right  ::)

On the other hand, having a LTR in 22MAG isn't something that's silly. You'll have to push HARD to get me to say the purchase of ANY rifle is silly.

And, since this is still amirika, "BECAUSE I WANT ONE" is a completely valid reason and answer!

I just went thru the same thought process. First of all, Ruger is currently not making 10/22 magnums...so you would have to find a used one. Because they didn't make a lot of these and not many people purchased them your looking at spending somewhere between $600 to $800 (gun broker.com) if you can even find one. On top of that there, the receiver has integral scope ring mounts formed on the top of the receiver, so that mounting Tec-Sights would not be impossible but would probably be a lot of custom work. Last of all the ammo is much more expensive, kind of defeating the cheap ammo concept of LTR's. On the other hand, I do like the 22 magnum round. It's pretty flat shooting and with a simple barrel change you can shoot 17 HMR, which is a very flat shooting round. Unfortunatey, most of these drop in barrels do not have a front sight dovetail, so you pretty much have to use a scope. Hope that helps.

Just traded off a Mossberg Chuckster, 640 K.  It was not
an accurate rifle, and ammo is about $10 a box.   Picked up
a Ruger 77/22 Hornet last year that chews up a 2" bull with
1"X ring with ten rounds at 100 yds.   Cost about the same, maybe even less using Hornady 35gr V Max, LilGun powder.   Haven't
measured velocity, but somewhere at 2800+.   Range is extended
even beyond the 17s that I have never used, so know nothing
except what is written.   Unless semi auto is a must, than the
many options out there won't work for you.   I'm sure there are
some sub MOAs out there that use the 22 WRM, but I have not
found one.   I am comfortable with running a bolt that works
at double the distance with a lower priced ammo if reloaded.
The rimfire 10/22 is a great ammo and money saver for practice,
and even the WRM is much more inexpensive than most battle
rifle calibers.   Just can't see the expense for the small gain over
the 22LR. ;D

This rifle was my first rifle ever.  I still have it.  And it still makes me look better than I really am.

When I was shooting it more regularly, I was getting single ragged hole 5-shot groups at 50 yards.

I'm really looking forward to my little girls showing enough maturity to be able to enjoy it as much as I have.  If they can prove themselves with Dad's old bolty, they will each get a 10/22 of their own to pass down.

That's great!   It proves that each rifle has it's own person-
ality.   Probably should have tried every brand of ammo I could
find, but didn't.   Hope your kids have longer arms than mine as
that rifle mfg in 62 had to be over 14" LOP.   Had a Weaver V-22
on it and was not satisfied after 75 yards.   It surely did put down
jack rabbits with one shot, whereas it many times a follow up
was needed when 22LR was used. ;D

the .22Mag bas ballistics that are upwards close to 2000 fps.  That is a little high I think.  Trying to remember, but really a little .22mag having almost double a handgun speed is quite amazing.  If I could actually GET a 10/22 that is.  So, I guess nevermind for now.. perhaps i will run into one someday.  I work with a guy that LOVES his old .22mag he has had since he was about 12 years old.  I have almost convinced this guy to some to Evansvile with me and camp with my cousin and I!!  Hopefully he will, my 24 ft. travel trailer would be FULL...of guns and guys ready for shooting and fun!  Sounds like a weekend of NO sleep and lots of trouble..  darn it..  ;D  I always plead innocent though

Two parts to this:

22 Win Mag is superlitive in and of it self. It performs way outside the parameters you would expect when you use it in a rifle. In my personal universe, it is a great SHTF choice.

Now, as far as the Ruger goes, and any semi auto platform it is used in for that matter, there are multiple issues of extraction. The old AMT comes to mind- there is good reason they went out of busines.

So, great round. Problematic in Semi Auto. I own one (9/22WM) and I enjoy the heck out of it. It shoots just fine. I just don't dare take it out much as it now has that intrinsic high value as it is made from UNOBTAINIUM.

But considar me biased as I am goofy about many things, and in particular the 22winmag. I am sorry Rugar quit making them. It was a really nice all around quiet and powerful system.

Take a marlin 25MN and put a scout scope on it and you have a mag fed (7+1) tack driver that has more muzzle energy at 50 Feet than a 22LR has at the muzzle. It does have that split bridge, though. I have had one for years and I now wonder what I might be able to do with it on the AQT  ::) . I mean, now that you got me thinking about it. Oh, wait..... No forward sling swivel on mine. Oh well. Maybe next year.

SO- LTR is one thing, this animal is a different thing altogether. Ammo ain't cheap, but still a bargin compared to 308 at the moment. If you have the extra bucks, beware the extaction problems if you go down that road of Semi Auto.

I'll bring my 22WM toys around if you all pm. Or maybe even if you don't PM me  8)

In closing, I would only ask this: is it possible to own too many Garands??????. Considaring that you would spend the eqivilant on one of the Rugar beauties I am thinking maybe not.

Take a moment and remember the kind of man you chose to be when you got yourself out of that last scrape. Maybe you prayed that you would be different if he delivered you. Maybe you found hope here you thought unreachable. Do not concern yourself with anything 'els THAT. Make the mission first.

Oohrah

Na, believe you can never own too much or too many
firearms ;D

I have a Marlin 922M. 22 Mag semi auto with a 7 round clip that works just fine.

Reportedly the Ruger 10/22 Mag and the Remington 597 Mag have jamming problems, but the 922M is built on the same frame as the Marlin Camp 9 and Camp 45 and this more robust frame solves the problems.

My home is on a 150 yd by 200 yd plot of farm ground. The 22 mag is just enough to do the job, but not over kill like the Ruger Mini 14 in .223.

The real utilitarian rifle is the Marlin 1894C in 38 spec/357 mag. That dispenses with critters in short order.

ax238

I just sold a 1894C due to severe jamming issues.  I worked with it and just finally sold it 3 weeks ago after putting money and time into the thing..  beautiful thing, it just didn't function consistently for me to trust it with a 12pointer.

If you just absolutely have to have a .22 Mag, consider the Remington 597:

But, as has been said, Ruger quit carrying them for a reason, and I doubt it was low sales.
They have men amongst them who know very well what they are about, having been employed as Rangers against the Indians and Canadians and this country being much covered with wood, and hilly, is very advantageous for their method of fighting. . . . ".  Lord Percy

Sounds like New Englanders to me.
