Corrective Lenses and safety glasses

I just entered the world of corrective lenses. There is no way that I can do contacts so it is glasses only.
I am looking for recommendations for some safety glasses that slip over my prescription glasses.
Here are the reasons:
I shoot C&R type Rifles mostly and the old ammo that goes with them, I would really like to have more protection than what my prescription glasses offer.
I have moderate Astigmatism and my left eye fights my right eye (according to the eye DR) so when I close my left eye I get a really good sight picture but I blink with every shot. (Typically I shoot with both eyes open). I would like to have a set of shooting glasses that I can tape the left side so that my vision out of the left side is blocked but I can keep both eyes open and don't blink. I don't really want to do that with what I had to pay for prescription glasses.
So are there any shooters out there that wear prescription glasses and have experience with slip over safety glasses?

It takes a large set of safety glasses to fit over eyeglasses. You may be able to find a clip-on safety shield (like tinted clip-on sunglasses lenses). Try one of the larger industrial supply stores.

My eye doctor sells a brand called cocoons unsure of spelling I have seen them only in dark shades but they may be available in clear they wrap completly around your perscription glasses. I have a pair and like them but can't wear them to shoot because they are scratched up due to my negligence however I am considering a new pair just for that purpose. You might be able to find them online or find a local place I go to Pearl Vision and they have several pairs in the store that you can try over your glasses. Good luck.

I personally would just buy a pair of prescription safety glasses.  They really aren't that expensive, just ugly.

The "best" solution is to get a pair of shooting glasses made by one of the outfits that specialize in glasses for shooters.  I use Decot            www.sportglasses.com but there are others.  They will take your prescription and make glasses that are specific to whatever shooting discipline you are shooting.  They also have an occluder to block the vision in the off eye enabling you to keep both eyes open.  I have been using them for years and am very satisfied.  Call them and let them explain the advantages to "shooting glasses".

Contact Starfox or DoubleLL (husband & wife in north Texas), they have shooting glasses with prescription inserts and different tints depending on light conditions.  I do not think they are inexpensive but it is another option. 8)

Special Prescripton shooting glasses are not in the budget right now.

Depending on the 'bells and whistles' desired/needed- go with ANSI Rated lenses (below).  I've  tried Safety Glasses' over my regular glasses when shooting.  For pistol the SGs aren't too much a problem, for rifle & outdoors- forget it- using lineless bifocals prob doesn't help either.

I recently upgraded to the ESS Ice Naro line of prescription shooting glasses ($63.00).  These are ballistically-proven, stylish glasses that incorporate prescription lens inserts behind the ballistic shield.  The shields are available in many colors, and the basic package comes with smoke, clear, and amber.  The wire-frame prescription frame inserts are an additional $28.00, which does not include the cost of having the lenses made by your eye doctor (this depends on your scrip, but for me was $72.00).
I have an astigmatism in both eyes, but with the corrective lenses in my Naros, I can see both the front sight, and the targets (so far up to 600 yds) clearly!  I also just used them for the last 8 days in Rolla, ND, at the RBC and the Appleseed.  These are very comfortable glasses to be wearing for 12+ hours a day.  They are not the cheap option, but I feel they were worth every penny I spent! 8)

p.s.: I bought them here:  http://gunnersalley.zoovy.com/product/ESSNARO/ESS-Naro-Shooting-Glasses.html

I wear the Revision Sawfly with the Rx inserts. I'd recommend getting the anti fog cloths also.

Because I got the prescription inserts at the same time that I got the rest of the kit, I was able to use my eye insurance and flex plan for them.

Cyborg Bill

Guess I'm lucky.  I am able to work just fine with regular shooting glasses.  My astigmatism is minimal and I HAVE to use a scope (presbyopia is a stone byotch) so I just use the focus on the scope.  Works great.  Don't know what I'd do if I had to wear my specs to shoot.

+1 on the sawfly. I just got my Rx insert and its great. I tool have mild astigmatism in the left but the shooting Rx my doc did is no problem as the insert is not angled too much as in a wraparound but simply very close to the eyes.

Another Sawfly user here. They were issued, along with corrective lens inserts.

And, I do believe I'm going to have to drop off some Appleseed info off at the head office. It's just a couple of miles from where I work.

I've got some by ESS. I got them here: http://www.opticsplanet.net/ess-rx.html
They also sell WileyX.
Note that if you have astigmatism, some goggles that are curved to fit closely may give you some distortion as your prescription is written for a flatter lens shape.

I have a pair of Bolle Vigilantes.  They have a prescription insert that can be taken out if you want to let someone use them without looking through the prescription.  They also have changeable lenses to let you swap colors as conditions call for.

This is basically the entire reason I switched to contacts.

On topic: I have heard good reviews about the Sawflys, they are just pricy. If you are trying to save some money, I have seen fit overs in clear at REI.

Edit: I believe they were in the bicycle section.

My Dad has to wear prescription glasses while shooting, and he has been using Cocoons, which are fit overs. The cool part is they wrap around and cover the entirety of the eye, with little side windows that still let u maintain peripheral vision. He loves them and has had no problems with them.

I wear Contacts personally with ESS or Oakley when I'm firing. I also have a set of Prescription Oakley sunglasses (DoD impact/ballistically certified) and a Prescription insert for my ESS safety glasses. I'm blind as a bat and they still look good. Either or could survive a direct hit from at least a .22LR. I unfortunately couldn't tell you the cost for them as they're issued to me from deployments since I needed them due to mission requirements.

This topic has a lot of great start points for the Civilian Markets, and from what I've seen out here in the West, prices on the originally DoD contracted items that have made it to these markets have fallen over the last few years.  Where this is headed is if there is a way to kind of 'codify' the various makes & Mfg.s for the Newbies.  Naturally the danger here is in naming brands &c., but I'm thinking in terms of glasses wearing shooting Newbie getting a Rx refill and trying for some ballistic protection.

Great feedback everyone!

If you know someone with access to the military online version of the base exchange, the Sawfly Revision basic military set can be had for less than seventy dollars with no tax or shipping.  I had my son get me a set for my birthday.

If this was posted above and I missed it, sorry.

While I've not tried this myself I've read of a couple of ways to help reduce/eliminate fogging on your glasses.

One is to wipe/wash the lenses off with saliva/spit and keep wiping till the smears are gone.

The second is to smear, then wipe off, soapy water on the lenses.

Its the residue that's left over that helps keep them from fogging up.

Take a bar of Ivory soap and rub on the lenses then polish off.  Old competitive shooters trick.

An old competitive off roader's trick is to use the same bar of 'IVORY' to rub back and forth on the fitting, fuel tank, fuel line, etc., to seal the fuel leak until you make it back to the highway..............   Ivory soap bar always in my off road 'essentials' kit.

Champion Shooters Supply sells corrective lenses that clip onto your standard frames and flip up or down as needed -- and they're inexpensive.  I've been using them for several years now with good success.
