For an idea why the military shoot program is so important. Read this. Hits count, but noiw even the Army is starting to recognize part of the issue is terminal balistic performance. This is why Appleseed with its message of marksmanship is even more important. Read the following and ask yourself, "Where have I heard that before".

Artillery lends dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl.

I was, am, never a fan of short barreled rifles or handguns or shot guns, I like to be able to reach out there,, then come back in, I like the weight and I got used to it, .30cal has always been the way to go, period.. I was never empressed with the 223, other than punching holes in paper, and woodchucks, coyotes, and what not... But I also have the sence to use the right tool for the job at hand..,, my 2 cents,,,,,sgtrock

The .223 is plenty for killing deer sized game in addition to 2 legged targets.  A very significant issue regarding terminal performance is fps and bullet penetration & fragmentaion/expansion.  Our current NATO spec USMC, ARMY, etc issue round relies on fragmentation and not expansion to work.  A short barreled rifle is giving up FPS right out of the gate.  Allow that bullet to go a couple of hundred yards and the difference is even more striking.  Once the fps drops significantly, there is no longer a dramatic yaw after penetration and subsequently no significant fragmentation.   IF the bullet penetrates, it will just make a small diameter hole.
While the last remaining CMP Garands are safe as there is not enough left and there is zero chance of the US issuing a .30-06 internal clip fed rifle, the CMP pulled the M14s back from the State Rifle clubs a couple of years ago and shipped them back to the Army.
The easy fix was to create the DM program and issue M14s with their 7.62 caliber round which is still being used in the M60, M240B, etc.
The fix for the 5.56 was to be found in a different bullet.  The current issue round is a 62gr FMJ whos performance is dismal at extended ranges.   Special Forces teams have been issued a round based on a 77g match bullet (Mk 262 Mod 1) and the results have been positive.   The performance is far better at 600+M.   The terminal performance of the bullet equals better accuracy in addition to being a better threat stopper.

Do you know what the twist on M4.
My Colt has 1:7 and I like the 75gr match ammo.
Just wondering what the Army M4 bbl twist is.

Gentlemen,
This isn't a bubble buster.
If I ever figure out how to exercise these Moderator Super Powers, I'll be transferring this to the "Road to Riflemen section.

Although this has something to do with the military, I would like to preserve this area for current operations when they happen and reference material.

I think it has possibilities for discussion and encourage you to do so, but that isn't the intent of this area.
Thanks for your consideration.
