April17-18, 2010 Fountain, CO

This was an awesome shoot!

The first shooter met us at the gate at 7:20 AM Saturday. The last man out was about 6-6:30PM. The day started with fog, visibility about 100-200 yards. By 8AM there was misty rain which increased to a steady light rain, sometimes more. The rain only lasted about 9 hours and since it was almost 40 degrees F. most of the 34 shooters just eased into it, and stayed the day.

At 4PM I asked for a show of (wet) hands: How many people want to go home? No one responded.

We kept shooting till after 5:30 PM.  Shooters, as young as 13, and older shooters, gotta be a Senior +, new and experienced shooters, made no difference. They stayed, and stayed, and stayed. They shot prone, in puddles on their shooting mats; sitting, in wind so hard that it blew wet sand off the berms and jammed up rifle actions; standing, with proper slings and natural point of aim, better than most military men. They learned to shoot well.

Shelter? We don't need no stinking shelter...

Sunday started cold with fog, it looked like a repeat of Saturday. Then got hot and sunny. By the end of the day we were sun and wind burned. I awarded 5 Rifleman Patches and 1 Young Patriot's Badge. Five people stepped up and volunteered to start training to be an instructor.... the youngest was 13.

God, I love this Appleseed Project! Hancock, Revere and Adams would have been proud if they could have seen these people...

See you at the next one!
