17 hits on a head sized target at 230 meters in 25 seconds with an iron sighted bolt action rifle.

Notice that he is using his middle finger to actuate the trigger.

I'm suddenly feeling very humbled and inspired.

Where does it spec the target and distance?
Several of us have operated Grizzled-one's Izmash BI-7 that way but I find 22 at 230 meters just a bit strechy.
The BI-7 is pretty easy to do that with. Started as a Biathlon rifle and is very smooth. "Straight Pull" bolt with a cam lockup. You can flick it open and closed without having to get a grip.

You can do pretty well with a SMLE too once you learn to operate the bolt and choice of finger for trigger actuation is just a matter of training that finger.

He's holding the bolt knob continuously, and it has a short throw so it's only a wrist-flick to work it. Much like the British technique with the old Enfield. Very slick!

Neat video.  Note how he barely moves--must have NPOA.

tdow, can you read the description?

According to Google language translation, this is Norwegian and says:
QuoteSkytekurs by Setnesmoen military camp. John Olav Ågotnes was one of his instructors. Here he would try his hand on 17 shots in 25 sec. Certainly faan he met at all!

Granted, the translation is somewhat lacking, but at least it's an idea of what's said.

Blessings,

I got some of the information from a fellow in Norway who posted the link on a different forum.  He posted several other links, including the rules for the event, all in Norwegian.  I believe the video I linked to was from the finals of the rapid fire event.

Anyone have a link to a video of the rapid technique for the SMLE?
Gun control is mind control.

Unless you have some padding on your shoulder, I don't know if I would do that with an smle. With no grip on the stock pulling it into the shoulder, there is going to be some serious bruising going on. The actions on the smle aren't as easy/smooth as a small caliber rifle like a .22 either. You have to really drive that cartrige into the chamber.

I saw a guy shoot a score on an AQT with a .17 bolt action.

I have a goal, and that is to do it with my No4 Mk2. Still need to get up to the range and start working on that though.

That's amazing!  Just shows you that using NPOA will make you a great shot.
Holding the bolt the entire time and squeezing the trigger with his middle finger are interesting techniques.

What kind of caliber does everybody think he is using that allows such a short bolt cycle distance?  tdow, do you know?

The Enfields (SMLE No. 1 Mk III and No. 4 Mk 1 & 2) lend themselves very well to this. You have to hold the rifle in your shoulder with the forward support hand, contrary to Appleseed doctrine. The trigger hand holds the bolt and not the stock pistol grip. You do have to push hard on closing the bolt since it is a cock-on-closing design, but that's one reason you pull it in tight with the forward hand. The bolts, especially on well-used rifles, are very slick, and the throw is not as long as you'd think.
Pull it into your shoulder tight with your support hand, get a firm grip on the bolt handle with thumb and forefinger, keep your face (jaw, not cheek) firmly on the low stock comb and eye on the sights, and start cranking, pulling the trigger with your middle finger. Oh yeah, lean way into it too. Works very well.

I can't help but notice that he's not using his sling...  Still, I need to give that a try.
