Wow, one person checks in from Colorado?  This is very sad  :'(  Wade's just a visitor here so he doesn't really count as a Coloradoan but if he's here much longer it will  ;D

Yes, I live in Colorado but I'm having a hard time claiming it.  I've tried to get Appleseeds going here but I get some really stupid reasons why we can't hold an Appleseed at this range or that.  ???  It's all very frustrating.  I was even able to get one setup in California but not Colorado.  There's something wrong with this.  !@#)

If it wasn't for Franktown Kid we'd still not have had an Appleseed here.  Thanks to him and his willingness to let us use his farm, we'd be worse off that South Carolina.  Now at least we've got a few folks that are Appleseed minded.

Only having lived here for a little over 3 years, I have to ask, WHAT'S WRONG WITH COLORADO?  I wear my Appleseed t-shirt at least once a week, and nobody asks me about it.  I try to talk to everybody I know who owns a gun and only one guy and his 2 daughters have ever come to an Appleseed (but he was a friend of mine when we both lived in Utah so they aren't from here either).  I'm beginning to think I live in waste land of doofus couch potatoes.

What are we going to do here folks?  How are we going to plant seeds in Colorado?  ALL HANDS ON DECK!! We've got bailing to do.

I've seen lots of interest on some of the other forums and local to CO only, but at the same time, it seems like no one ever does anything about it.

I would have participated in the one the Franktown Kid hosted, but it was just too far from home for me at the time.

I agree, something needs to happen, but I'm not sure what.  Maybe some flyers at some of the local gun shows or something.  I'd be more than willing to help out as much as I can.

Is there anything saying that we can't do it at a public range like in the Pawnee Grasslands somewhere, or maybe some of the shooting spots outside of Lyons?
Title: Re: CO check in who's here
Post by: RifleWoman on December 26, 2008, 07:24:10 PM
Well the Pawnee Grasslands is federal land and you'd have to have a permit to do a organized event.  Plus it's not regulated and we'd have to compete with all the guys who go there.

I've tried the Weld County range and a few others down this way. No luck.  I've put stuff in Jensen Arms, Gun Sport in Boulder, and The Front Range Gun Club (the indoor range in Loveland).  I guess there is a small chance of getting one in Greeley this year, but I've not heard anything back on that.  It would be nice to have one on this side of Denver.

I had to drive all the way from Longmont to Worland, WY to attend my first Appleseed.    :P

I guess we keep plugging along.  I know that Franktown Kid is going to have more shoots this year, but only one event location for a place like CO is embarrassing.  :-[

It's not a problem to shoot on priviate land if we can get permission from the owners and not upset the neigbors, so if you know of any places maybe you can get something set up.

Two men  have stepped forward so far to get Free Marksmanship coaching (mini's are normaly like that, free),anymore? pm me.

I don't know Riflewoman I had to drive 1690 miles to my first Appleseed shoot "Devilla TX 11/07" a week long Riflemans Boot Camp, Perhaps CO is just a little slow starting out I think it Will get going this year 2009 I have a Good feeling about the 2 that have step forward so far.

Yeah sometimes I wonder about this state....heheheh. But there are a few of us hiding in the sage and scrub oak who think Appleseed is a good idea. There is a very large and varied shooter/competitor population here, what with IPSC/USPSA, 3-Gun, highpower rifle, silhouette, and all the big game hunters. I think the problem is that word has not spread here yet.  I shot IPSC and highpower rifle for years and never heard the name mentioned until 2 weeks back on the internet.

Boulder Rifle club has 200 yards.
Aurora Rifle club has 200 yards.
Colorado Rifle club has 1000 yards with beautiful fully enclosed pits east of Denver.
Buffalo Creek gun club has 600 yards up in the mountains.
Ben Lomond Gun Club out east near Ramah has I think 300 yards.
Frontier Gun Club in Falcon has 300 yards and is building a new range location which will eventually have 1000 yds with pits.
Pueblo West Sportsman's Association has no less than five separate rifle ranges from 100 yds to 420 yards.
All of these are on or near the Front Range where most of our population is.

I have shot at all of the above except Boulder, and am a member of the latter two. Sounds like Appleseed needs to be presented there on their meeting nights. Gotta find out when they are, haven't been to either one in a while. I'm new to Appleseed, maybe one of you CO folks could help me figure out a good sales pitch? Seems to me we could have at least one range in the Denver area and at least one in the Colorado Springs/Pueblo area active.

Welcome to Appleseed.  Were hoping to have some Appleseeds in Canon City, CO this year.  Well, I'm very sure we will, I'm just waiting for the dates to get them on the schedule.  If you know of any places down your way, it would be great to get more Appleseeds going in the state.

I just joined as well.  I am from Colorado Springs.  I was going to sign up for the april appleseed in Raton, NM at the whittington center.

Where was it done in Canon City?

I also belong to the Ben Lomond Range out in Ramah.  Anyone approached them about doing a shoot there?  Not sure how many folks they could handle, maybe many in their berm area, if these are 25 yard shoots.  There is camping out there too on the property.  They have done boyscout shoots in the past and have hunter sight in where there are many folks.

Thanks
Robert

The one in Canon City is on a private farm.  It looks like there will be one there for April 19th.  Franktown Kids place.  He's a member of Ben Lomond also and is working on getting the rest of the Appleseed events there.  Hopefully that will work out.

Castle Rock here. Was also going to look at going down to Raton for the shoot there, but Canon City is closer. I don't see any info on the official schedule, though. Can anyone point me to a link? Heard good things about the Ben Lomond club, and better about the Colorado Rifle Club. Not a member of either, though.

Canon City isn't on the schedule yet, but should be really soon.  Franktown_kid is out of town for awhile so when he gets back we'll get that information up.  He's also working on Ben Lomand.  Should be going good down that way.  need more on the north end of Denver though.  ;)

Okay Colorado, it's on like Donkey Kong.  No more snoozing.  We can't expect to recruit anyone without marketing materials.  I figured it shouldn't be too tough, so I took a stab at a draft version of a CO Flyer.  Note it's DRAFT.  I want your input on content - I'll work out a visually appealing layout after we have content.

Putting on our marketing caps, here are the basic reader's questions I think a flyer should answer:

I hashed out the attached pdf fairly quickly, and it can certainly be improved (instead of just using the graphic, perhaps make reference to RWVA, etc.).  Give me critiques on "What is Project Appleseed?"  How would you briefly describe Appleseed?  Again, after we've got content details nailed down, I'll work on layout and prettiness.

Corrections to the flyer

Kids under 21 shoot FREE.

All current Military (Active, Reserve, Guard) shoot FREE

Keep in mind that 99.9% of the folks reading this flyer will have no clue who "Franktown_Kid" is or how to contact him.

Try "CO@Appleseedinfo.org" for contact emails, that should go to Franktown_Kid.

Email this flyer to puff-tmd here on this forum, he can add it to the shoots Event Information Page.  Or put one he has made on there.

Good work.

The CO Appleseed team looks very promising!  The idea that there are 6-8 folks in the Den area that are willing to work on new locations and promotions, really puts CO leaps ahead of most other states.

We discussed getting 4-5 shoots set up and completed before end of June, and working on an Instructor Course and another 5-6 shoots after that, maybe more!

You all want to make it happen, it can happen easily!

Thanks CT9A and funfaler.  I'll update the age, details of active military, and the contact email (the FranktownKid text was just a placeholder and I was hoping someone would chime in with a Colorado Appleseed email, as you did  O0)

I'll prettify it with graphics and layout this weekend, so there's still time to give me your $0.02 (even if you haven't been to an Appleseed, yet  ;)), just get posting!

I'm in Laramie just north of Fort Collins. I'll be at the Sydney Nebraska Cabelas early Febuary and will post flyers there as those folks are supporters of Appleseed. I know a lot of Coloradans shop there and maybe that would help. I love to go to the Appleseed shoots whenever I buy a new rifle as it's an excellent venue to give 'em a shakedown. ;)

Ya know, Fred's pushin for some winter shoots and Colorado definetly has winter. We could have a snowshoe shoot or if I'm not the only skier we could do a "Biathlon" Appleseed too in the cold.

Has anyone talked to the folks at the shops and larger stores around?  Maybe we could put up some flyers on their walls or leave a stack on their counters.

biathalon - I'm not sure about biathlons, but a buddy and i are going out to some Nat Forest land west of Lyons, CO tomorrow AM.  It's supposed to be in the 60s in the metro area, so the mountains should be comfortable.  How far from you is Lyons?

CT9A - I haven't talked to any shops, but we should look into getting a table at both Tanner and Crossroads.  Let me finish the flyers and we can start talking to shops.  You want to start doing the legwork to see what it takes to get a table at the shows?  Probably be like $50, and we'll need to get a banner and some signs.

Sounds good, I'll start calling around and seeing what info. I can dig up.

East of Lyons or West?  I'm going up tomorrow with my brother and one of his buddies and might be going there (we may go to Pawnee instead, not sure yet).  We'd be going to the area dubbed "the north shooting spot".
Title: Re: CO check in who's here

West of Lyons, and "the north shooting spot" is exactly where we were.  Conditions were great: snow's melted from mostly everywhere and the ground is dry for comfortable prone shooting.  Have fun if you guys head up there; weather's supposed to be good again tomorrow.

The range was BUSY!  When we finally decided to pack up and leave there were almost 30 people there other than our little group.

Well, I got some information on the gun shows.

Tanner - 1 x 8' table = $70.00.  $5 discount if payment is received at least 7 days prior to show date.  This is for an aisle table, wall tables cost more.

Crossroads of the West - 1 x 8' table = $90.00.  $10 discount if payment is received 15 days prior to show date.  This is for an aisle table.

Anyone know the name of the gun shows going on in the 'Springs?  I'll get a hold of them too.  I'm trying to get in touch with the show managers to see if we can get a discount or something.

Sweet.  Let us  know what you find out!

Does anyone in CO have an Appleseed banner or dispaly materials for gunshows?  I've got a Gadsden flag and Betsy Ross flag that we could use.  Anyone else have other Rev War era flags or other materials?  Maybe we can get a couple hires photos of last years CO Appleseed from boulderphoto and we can make a couple large prints?  Perhaps one of the firing line and maybe some of the instruction?

For the Prospectors Gun Show it's $50 for an aisle and $55 for a wall, no discounts for early payment and no discounts for us being with Appleseed.

Sounds like we need to have a fundraiser... Who's up for a bakesale?  What about a carwash?   I'll do it topless  **)

Seriously though, does anyone know if there is national Appleseed money for buying space at shows?  Or does each state have their own budget for recruiting?  Or do the local Appleseeders generally pony up the cash to get a table at local shows?
Title: Re: CO check in who's here & Tanner Gun Show 31 Jan
Post by: Franktown_Kid on January 22, 2009, 01:55:04 PM
Hello all.

Well I'm officially back from a long "vacation". It's good that while I was gone you've been working on this thing.

So who wants to do the Tanner Gun Show the weekend of 31st Jan / 1 Feb? It's in North Denver and it's one of the larger ones - 700 tables.

I called Tanner Gun show this am. They are sold out of tables for the 31st Jan / 1 Feb weekend. I got on the waiting list. They may call me in an hour, or 10 minutes before the show starts, or not at all. It'll be $65 if it happens. I'll figure out the money for the first one. Then we'll see.

Does anyone want in, knowing it may not happen, may be on short notice, and knowing it's on the weekend of the Super Bowl??

The Tanner Gun Show runs from 9-5 Saturday, 9-4 Sunday. Setup is from noon to 8 pm Friday, Takedown right after the show ends Sunday.

The way I've done this before, is to set up shifts so each person also has time to see the show. We need to have two people per shift so the booth is still manned if someone needs to get something to drink, or go to the bathroom, etc. Since we're exhibitors, we get in free. Parking is free at Tanner.

For those who don't know, Tanner is held in the Denver Merchandise Mart, on the left (as you face it from 58th) back side, it's called the Pavillion. You get off I-25 at the 58th street exit and go east. Turn North immediately onto the street in front of the taco place. Drive to the back and park. It was on your right.

Friday for set up -  Noon - 8 pm - actual time will depend on who volunteers and when they can be there - probably 2-3 hours the first time - this factors in some waiting around. I'd like at least one person to help, preferably two. This is a good way to see what's there beforehand and cherry pick the offerings!

Shifts during the show. Two people per shift:

Saturday am - 8:30 am - 1:00 pm          4.5 hrs
Saturday pm  - 12:30 am - 5:00 pm       4.5 hrs

Sunday am - 8:30 am -  1:30 pm           4.5 hrs
Sunday pm - 12:30 am - 6:00 pm          5.5 hrs includes take down, bring work gloves and winter gear. They open the doors to the outside so vehicles can drive in and out, it's night, and it can get pretty cold.

I'd like to get everything figured out regardless of whether we actually can do it, so we'll be ready for the next one. If we can do this one, we'll have a smoother operation for the next one, which'll be closer to the time the Colorado shoots start up.

While two people could work all weekend and do this, I figure we need about 8 folks to make it pleasant enough that someone would do it again. You'd work half a day, and have a half a day to see the show, which is barely enough. Then the other day you can go to church, do chores around the house, and go sight in that rifle you bought.

What say you? If they call back do I tell 'em we'll be there?

Welcome back Franktown Kid!  I'll be in Omaha next weekend, so I'm not much help for the upcoming show.  But let's definitely get a table at the next one (Mar 21-22) - I'll even kick in and split it with you so you don't have to carry the cost by yourself.  I think your division of labor with 4 teams of 2 looks good, and I'll commit myself and a buddy to at least one of the shifts for the Mar show.  Since he and I are close to the Metro area, we can take the first Saturday shift of the Mar show so others who have a longer drive won't have to get up at o'dark-thirty.

I'm in for whatever.  I have a couple of medical issues that will constrict what/how long I can help out, but as long as my body holds together, I'll do what I can.  Financially, I can't commit to much of anything, I'll try though.

Hi everyone. My first post on this forum. ColoradoPete steered me here and I like what I see.

If it hasn't already been done, I am pretty sure I can get a stack of brochures in the two most prominent gun stores in Colorado Springs.

I am also a member of Frontier Sportsman's Club and will gladly pitch the the idea of hosting a shoot to the board if y'all want me to.

Welcome cornstalker!  That'd be great if you could hit the Springs stores.  Don't use any of the draft flyers just yet - I talked to Franktown Kid a couple days ago and the shoots aren't going to be down in Canon City, plus some of the dates are changing.  Kid worked like crazy to get the Patriot's Day shoot on April 18-19 at Ben Lomond Gun Club and I believe he may have have gotten a commitment for May, too.  Plus he's trying to get some other ranges to pick up the other shoots.  Kid will have more info next week and then we can revise the flyers and start canvassing the state.  Stay tuned.  O0

And speaking of other ranges, it would be awesome if Frontier Sportsman's Club would be interested in hosting a shoot.  There's a lot of good info and suggestions around here on how to get clubs/ranges interested in hosting.  Here's a great place to start.  (http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=510)

Again, welcome to the team!

Army Qualification Target.  Scaled targets to represent 100 yd, 200 yd, 300 yd, and 400 yd when paper is placed at 25m. Stages are fired from standing, sitting, and prone.  Here's a good post explaining shooting and scoring an AQT (http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=5332).

You can get them from Fred (http://www.fredsm14stocks.com/catalog/acc.asp). O0

Im out of the springs, and was able to make it to the shoot that Franktown-kid hosted (I was the idiot who broke his ankle two days before the shoot  and got to cheat on the standing portion by using crutches :))

A friend and I are putting the roofing on the high poer range at Ben Lomond in a few weeks. So the caretaker and board of directors might be a bit more receptive.

I'll talk to Bill as soon as he gets back from Arizona about it.
