Title: Talk Radio Techniques to Promote Appleseed
Post by: fisherdawg on March 25, 2014, 05:01:02 PM
Ok, your promotional efforts are already paying off.  We only have 409 tickets left for all events in Alaska in 2014. Only 7 left for April 19th!

I listen, occasionally, to AM-650 Local Talk Radio in Anchorage.  Rick Rydell in the a.m. drive time & Mike Pocaro in the p.m drive time both have 'open forum Fridays and are pro 2nd A.  I call and promote the upcoming events.  If you listen to other shows in your area that are likely outlets, here are some talking points to get the message across in 90 seconds.  Be friendly, (a wise trainer once told me to always smile when I'm on the phone for a 'sales' call.  Good advice that!) speak slowly, and you'll do great.
1. Introduce yourself (first name only is the usual protocol) and say hello to the host. Be prepared to allow them to interupt.  It's their show.
2. Say "I'm calling to promote the upcoming Project Appleseed Rifle Marksmanship & American Heritage at [insert range e.g Birchwood Range in Chugiak on date X]"
3. "Folks can get registered and get a lot more information at our website appleseedinfo.org"
4. "The event is put on by the Revolutionary War Veterens Assn.  The RWVA is a 100% volunteer 501(c) (3)."
5. "Our purpose is to reignite the spirit of the American Revolution by telling the true story of April 19th 1775 and teaching traditional American rifle marksmanship."
6. Repeat the website -- appleseedinfo.org
If they give you a little more time, you might mention:
7.  "April 19th, 1775 was the first day of the Revolutionary War -- Paul Revere's Ride, Lexington, Concord, the Shot Heard 'Round the World, you know.  The day America was born."
8. "We teach the absolute best of the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship. New shooters and highly experienced shooters tell us they find this is an awesome event."
If they veer to politics -- just say "the politics of the RWVA as a 501(c)(3) begin and end on April 19th 1775. We're convinced that when Americans here the true story of the sacrifice of the Patriots on April 19th, they will get passionate about being engaged in the civic process in our country.  That's the legacy of the American Revolution -- self government. That's got to be good, right?":
If they want a full interview.  Super! I volunteer for that. Or there are additional hints under Media Interactions of the forum.

Anyway, Keep it simple and go for it.  As often as possible!
Thanks ;D

I know there are prolly to many to comprehensively list, but do ya think we could get some of the phone numbers for some of the shows here in Alaska listed in this thread for easy reference. Last week Pocaro was discussing an article on the internet of April 19th that was gussied up to sound like it just happened (listed names we all recognize; Gage, ,Davis, Parker, and in their right roles, but no indicator of time, and head banner was a photo of cops in Boston when they were searching for junior tsarnaev) and (sad to say) many people thought they really were confiscating guns in Mass. right now. I wanted to call in and use that as an 7th step opp., but didn't know the number and was to busy at the moment to sleuth it down (the hot iron was left un struck).

Here's a list I complied last year of main, not on-air, phone numbers for all the Radio Stations in Alaska I could track down.  We sent them a pre-recorded PSA, but I don't think we got any airplay or response.  Frustrating. Could call to get on-air numbers in the various markets, though.
