So next Saturday 05/8/2010 my lovely wife, some of her family, and I are headed out to tranquility wildlife area for a day at the range.  ^:)^

http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/portals/9/pdf/pub036.pdf

Oh, how I need some trigger time.  :~

It is an unsupervised, free, state run range with 25 and 100 yard rifle / pistol ranges. If anyone wants to join us feel free to do so. Since it is a bit of a drive for me expect me to get there before noon and not leave till late afternoon. I will be packing a lunch and spending the day at the range. You can find me under the red RWVA hat. I will bring along some Appleseed AQTs for those that want to try their hand, and then there are always some 1" squares. I might even print up a batch of my favorite 1" circles, true 4 moa without those cheater corners ;)

If you can't make it thats ok, find a range near you get your buddies together and spend some quality time on the firing line.

Where is that located...and how far is it from Newark? Since you will be out and about already anyway...you should take your lovely wife out for a nice dinner at Millers Essenplatz after your range session ;) Social hour starts at 5, but dinner isn't served till 6:30 so I'm sure you could make it  O0

Hey...can't blame a guy for trying right?  :wb:

Have a GREAT day on the range!!! :---

Hi Dry Fire

Found out about the Appleseed Project a couple months ago while listening to WHIO radio. Got excited ^:)^. Owned a rifle and handgun 30+ yrs ago but ended up selling. Saturday I purchased a used Ruger 10/22 w/scope and can't wait to use it. Because of crazy work hours won't be able to do a Saturday shoot until on vacation in August. So was very glad to see your post about this Saturday. I still need to purchase a strap, cleaning kit and ear protectors.

Was very glad to find out there is someplace free to shoot. I would love to try to make it down there on Saturday. I live about 30 miles north of Cincinnati.

Would I need ear protectors then? If so where is best place to find. Something else I would need for shoot would be a mat, any advice--oh, and rain gear.
Hope this wasn't too much information or too many questions.

You'll want to have hearing protection. Even if you're only shooting 22s someone might setup next to you with a cannon  :---  I'd suggest getting a pair of earmuff for everyone and a pack of the disposable foam plugs. If it hot and it's all small caliber the plugs are nice. In you situations you might want both in. Wal-Mart usually has both in stock, or any gun store, or Home Depot / Lowes.

I'm not sure what the line of that range looks like. A good option for a quick mat are the 6x8 "astro turf" type rugs that you can usually find the same places listed above. You can chop one in half for 2 mats.

GoldFish

Wal-Mart is a good place for hearing protection if you want to buy it from a store.  They sell both ear plugs (in bulk for a great deal) and ear muffs.
If you want to buy from an online store, MidWayUSA ( midwayusa.com ) has muffs ON SALE for a decent price.  They also have actual shooting mats on sale for $24.99.  These are the same mats that many of my fellow Appleseeders and I use.

DeborahG,
Glad you are interested, just to let you know you can check the following for state run ranges across Ohio. The closest to you is probably Spring Valley Wildlife area, it is $5 a day or I think $24 a year.

Ohio List
http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Home/wild_resourcessubhomepage/shooting_infolandingpage/shooting_ranges_default/tabid/17601/Default.aspx

I like to go out to tranquility since it is unsupervised and I am permitted to shoot from the prone (laying down) position on the 25 yard range. At Spring Valley you can only shoot from prone at 100 yds and with a .22 that is a bit further than I want to walk to check targets. You are welcome to come out and join us at Tranquility this Sat. I will probably not roll in till around 10am or so (the in-laws like to sleep in on Sat.) You will most certianly want to get a set of muffs or plugs, either can be had from wal-mart, lowes, or home depot. As always with Appleseed we preach and practice the idea of run what you brung. So if you want an informal idea of Appleseed, bring out your Ruger and some .22 ammo and I can at least make sure the scope is set right and get you on the road to the basics of Appleseed. Of course for all the info and experience you have to get to an event ;)

Speaking of which check out the dates for Miamisburg, there is one every month. Miamisburg is also a .22 only range so your ruger would be perfect, plus the fact that our max # is 20 means you usually get some really good one on one instruction with the instructors. Hope to see ya on Sat. and of course anyone else who wants to come out and spend a day at the range  :~

I will be at Spring Valley range see if any of this dry fire exercise is being fruitful.  I'm still practicing Posterboy!!!

Jeep,
If you are going to be around that area, let me know.  5/8 9am till I get bored, tired or run out of ammo.

Meanstreaker,
I've removed the scope from the AR15 and have put back on the BUIS and Aimpoint.  Still might use the scope at the next appleseed though.  I can't frackin see those tiny a** targets at 25m!

jeep45238

No grantees that I'll be at either location, but it sure would be nice to send some lead downrange again (though I doubt my 10/22 will be back in commission by then).

Faitmaker

What'd you do to your 10/22?  I'll have the Marlin 795 and the AR15 out... probably do a little pistol work.  Came up with a load for my .40 that I'm extremely happy with.

jeep45238

It lost the extractor and extractor plunger during a course of fire - it either caused, or was caused by, a case failure.

Guess this is a reason to get out the Marlin 51 and get that dialed in, maybe bring along the Winchester Model 12 for trap, and do some pistol work.

Para,
I apologize sir, but alas the father in law has been hounding me for a day at tranquility for a while and this is the only date that fit my schedule. He complains we never go out shooting anymore since I am always at an Appleseed on my off weekends. (Is that really a bad thing? I certianly don't think so. O0 ) That is why I ened up picking the day that I did. I would have been Appleseeding that weekend in PA but the wife said that wasn't allowed to due to mother's day  &) .

Hope to see someone there, if not I guess I will finally get plenty of much needed trigger time for myself.  ^:)^

Hey Everyone   ;D

Thanks for all the info. I'm gonna try to get there Sat. Sometimes I don't get home from work til 6:00a.m. and to sleep at 8:00a.m. so that kind of blows my day. (Also need to meet some people for dinner at 6:00. I have to try to cram a life in on weekends) I'll need to check my funds to see if I can afford everything I need.

I did find an indoor/outdoor range while checking the wal-mart, it's site, it's the miamivalleyshootinggrounds.com in vandalia. Site says, "Our outdoor ranges are distanced at 10m, 25yd, 50yd, and 90yds with backstops capable of handling all handgun and rifle calibers. Our Indoor 50ft Range supports ammunition of all handgun calibers below the 41 magnum performance level."   Indoor time is $11/hr, outdoor is $11 for the whole day. Anyone ever been there? They also have instructions etc.

If I can't get there Sat. please keep me informed if any of you are going to be around this area later. Sure would appreciate it. Oh should I buy extra mags for the Appleseed in Aug?

Thanks so much and looking forward to meeting everyone
Deborah

DryFire

DeborahG,
I know the feeling of getting off of work in the morning, I spent my 1st year and half at my present job working third shift not getting home till 8 am or so. I haven't visited the range you mentioned so I can't offer any feedback on that.

As far as extra magazines for the AS event, you can certianly get by with just two magazines, but it is sometimes nice to be able to prepare more than 2 if you know what the upcoming courses of fire will call for.

Hey Dryfire,

Faitmaker and I were at Spring Valley every Saturday for several weeks leading up to the recent New Philly shoot -- the range officers had no problem whatsoever with us shooting prone on the 25 yrd and 50 yrd ranges.

I would love to check out Tranquility sometime, sounds very nice.

Agreed, but at times I think it is how you approach the ranger.  Either way, I have always been able to shoot prone at 25 yards.  No rule against it.  You just have to ask.

DryFire

Hmmmm.... Now you guys got me thinking. The reason I stated that it wasn't permitted was because I had called (after I got invovled in AS) and inquired about shooting from prone and sitting on the vaious ranges and was told that it was only allowed at 100 yds. I guess I will have to make a dedicated trip up there and see.  O0 I always liked the facilities up there, and the range master is usually a nice guy. It helps being a supervised range since it keeps those who wish to do less than safe things away anyways. Thanks for the info guys.

Hey Guys

Since I haven't been to any ranges how does it work? Do you need to call ahead and reserve a spot or just show up; supply your own targets, place your own, do they do it for you? Obviously clueless. ???

Thanks
DeborahG

DryFire

DeborahG,
For a range like Spring valley where there is a fee you have to stop at wal-mart (or anywhere that sells a hunting/fishing license) and get a one day or year long range pass. Then just head out to the range no reservations necessary. Bring your own eye and ear protection, targets, some cardboard for behind the target, ammo, and your are pretty good to go. Last time I was at spring valley they had that orange snow/construction fencing across the target line, and they provided clothes pins so you could pin up your targets to the fence. Tranquility on the other hand has nothing at the target line from which to hang targets so you have to bring something to hang the targets from, may that be home made or purchased. Some people just use a large cardboard box and staple the target to that, and others build their own portable stands to take with them. I am in the latter category on that one ;) I know you said you had owned a firearm in the past and are just getting back into it, might I suggest the forum over at ohioans for concealed carry as another great place to ask questions and get advice.  http://ohioccwforums.org/index.php there is also the Buckeye Firearms Asociation as well here http://forums.buckeyefirearms.org/index.php

Deborah,

You'll need an ODNR range pass if going to a supervised range - I don't believe that you need anything besides shooting materials at unsupervised ranges.

The range passes are $5 for a day, or $24 through the end of Feb. 2011, good at any ODNR range.  No need to call ahead, but you will need to show up and supply/place your own targets.  You can get these passes at any place that sells hunting and fishing licenses.  Don't be suprised if they look confused, it's a request they don't usually hear  :)

Spring Valley supplies backing and the pins to clip to the fence.  You'll need to supply targets.  They have tape on the line by the brooms (you'll know what I'm talking about when you get there).  The Walmarts that I've been to don't bat an eye when I asked for my range pass.

Remember to read the rules and if you don't understand something, just ask.  Spring Valley rangers are Larry (the older one) and Terry.  Both good people although Larry can be ornery.

New rifles are always a little shy, I'm sure it will be fine after a few hundred rounds especially if you give it a talking to :-D
