Homemade cheek-pads?

I'm looking for a cheap home-made cheek-pad idea for an LTR; something maybe a little better looking than duct tape.

Anybody come up with ideas out there?

I buy the foam pipe insulation in 4' lengths, cut pieces of to either raise the comb or increase the pull and tie them on with boot laces, noose loop at the grip end, wind around and around and tie off at the rear swivel. Its just temp for AS weekend to find what works, doesn't mark or harm the rifles so people don't fight me over it. Cheap. I'll add some pics later.

You might try Gaff tape to hold on whatever padding you use. It looks better than duck tape, the adhesive comes off so you don't leave sticky stuff on your stock, and it has a slightly rough surface so your cheek is less likely to slip when you sweat. You can get it at theater and sound system places.

Try Vet-Wrap or Coflex, both are cohesive bandage materials that stick to themselves & conform to odd shapes. Both are easily removable & won't mark up or leave sticky crap on you stock. Available at feed store or pet supply and cheap.

Second that motion, I use vet-wrap. It comes in a rainbow of colors. Soft on the face, easily replaced, leaves no adhesive residue, cheap enough to leave on a shooters rifle and let them take it home afterwords. A $1.00 pool noodle for foam, and three packs of vet-wrap at $2.29 each will do a dozen rifles easy.

Tractor supply carries vet-wrap if you don't live near the great outdoors.

What's wrong with duct tape? Somebody always has some at the range and you can buy it anywhere. Wildman swears by it.

I think the problem comes in if you ever try to remove it later.

Yeah, sorry.

I took the question as what can we as instructors and Shoot bosses do as temporary fixes for our "guests" rifles. They are getting right pernickety out there now.... Don't ruin the patina!

Sure on my own rifles for me, its get out the belt sander, glue, wood, and have at it...

I agree with "Dangerous Old Woman" Gaff tape is good stuff.  We use it in our theater.  It is just as strong as duct tape, designed to so you can tear it with your hands, doesn't leave residue, it will stick to anything, and it look good.  I always have some with me when I am at range the stuff is great. http://www.buytape.com/ has it but it is pretty pricey, you might want to shop around.

Vet wrap is cheap, reusable, moveable, easy to add/subtract to get the height right, does not get slick with sweat on the hot days, does not get hot in the sun, softer than tape too.

Not the only solution, maybe not the best solution, just the one I prefer currently.

Here's how I made mine. An army sleep pad cut to fit over the comb of the stock. Secured the large piece to stock. Then I cut a smaller piece maybe 2x6. In the prone position I had a helper place the smaller piece over the existing larger piece. The smaller piece creates a ridge or reference point for my jaw.  This helps insure a more consistent cheek weld. I did use OD 100 mile an hour tape. I don't care what it looks like hitting the target is more important. My guess is a number of things would clean up any mess if I choose to remove it at some point. Goo Gone, linseed oil, turpentine.

Indeed.  And easier head shots.

I have a lot of old broken or split beer coozies.  Not sure why.  Here is a crude cross-section of what I use for bulk:

Duct tape outside & around to affix, and then some kind of adhesive-backed material could dress it up.  I like the mole-skin and pipe insulation ideas.  I happen to have a bunch of black SpireR SoundPad foam (personal computer sound insulating foam), which is fairly thin, so I use that.

The guys in Florida suggested an ACE bandage.  I tried one on top of some foam packing wrap and it has worked wonderfully.

I ran across a guy with a plastic stock who had reworked the entire thing with Bondo (auto body filler).  If you want something more permanent than ACE bandage, but not as permanent as that, I think you could wrap the stock in Saran wrap, and then build up a platform with Bondo on the top and two sides.  You should be able to do this in such a way that the cheek pad will slip on and off but be tight enough for use.  If it doesn't turn out tight enough, you should be able to secure it with one or two recessed webbing straps.

Here's another option.

Though not homemade in my home, it's homemade in his home for your rifle.

http://karstenskydexcheekrest.com/

I own one and I am very pleased with the product.

Paid about 60.00 FRN for it.

I have seen them in person mounted on scoped M1A's that I have shot.

Easy to smith onto your rifle too.

Karsten is a good guy to do business with and does a quick delivery.

It's a very rugged accessory insafar as an adjustable cheek rest.

I recommend them highly, especially for you scoped M1A shooters.

Hope this helps.

Our AR -10's have command arms colapsible stocks with plastic (made in Israel) adjustable cheek face plates.
Now being that they are Kydex plastic, the face slips especially when it is warm. What to do I wondered?
Then I got an inspiration, got in my truck and headed straight for the big box hardware store ( Lowes)
and purchased a can of liquid rubber. I removed the cheek pieces, sanded them down well, and proceeded
to apply a generous even coat every four hours (three coats total) Left them to dry for 48 hours and installed them
back on the collapsible stocks.

How did it turn out? Like when you hit the brakes on your car and the rubber brings you too a screeching halt.
No more face slip. Solid turkey neck cheek weld is what we all want. For 8.00 bucks a great solution for us anyway. O0

This is the stuff you can coat a screw driver shaft so  you don't get an electrical short if you happen working with live electricty. @)

Coating duct tape with this stuff I could see working as well. Whatever you imagination can conceive.
