16 Liberty loving patriots came out on a lovely weekend on Veterans Day to better their marksmanship and to learn of their shared American history and heritage. Ranging in age from 10 to 81 and experience levels from beginner to very experienced we had a quite successful two days of learning, camaraderie, and remembrance of those brave folks of so long ago that secured the right for us to have such an event.

The initial Hits Count target vividly showed that there was "room for improvement" so the fire hose of instruction was unleashed and the sweet smell of gunpowder filled the air. By noon on the first day most people were beginning to shoot decent groups and we had sorted out several rifle issues and had made adaptations for a couple shooters who were struggling with our conventional shooting positions. At intervals during the day we were treated to moving renditions of the Three Strikes by Louie Louie, Sarea_51, and CodyClemonade. Huzzah! By the end of the first day there were dramatic improvements across the board and everyone went home a bit sore and tired, but happy.

On Sunday all shooters from Saturday returned and we even had one addition. All the points of instruction were reviewed and the Redcoat target revealed that Saturday's lessons were not forgotten. The morning flew by before we had a well earned lunch and the chance to hear about some remarkable men and women who fought to secure our independence and freedom. By the end of the day two new Riflemen were discovered and two previous Riflemen re-qualified. Every instructor was richly paid as we saw great and notable gains in every single shooter.

Finally, many thanks to our excellent team who worked together like a well oiled machine and made a great weekend possible. When the rewards and commendations were done at the end there was one last significant addition as we promoted JC/DC to full Instructor and retired his Orange Hat. Mary, Sarea_51's mom, a delightful, personable, and smart woman, stepped up and took a Blue Hat to help bail the ship of Liberty. Well done and congratulations!

There will be photos and videos posted soon and your commentary is most welcomed. Please feel free to share your photos as well.

Rambo Granny posted a great video summing up the weekend.  Follow her link.  I had to download the MP4 file to view.  The file is small so it was quick.

Thanks Janet!!

Hi everyone,

I had a very good time at the training. I learned allot now I need to get better.  To that end I have a question.

Do you have any recommendations on how to dry fire with laser using a 22LR?

I have a Laser HIT dry fire system but they do not sell a .22 caliber laser cartridge. I have not been able to find via searching the internet. I did find one that inserts into the barrel then is activated by sound (I assume the click of the firing pin) but I also read that dry firing a rimfire rifle damages the firing pin.

Worst case...  I can practice with my AR-15 for which I have laser cartridge but that does not help me get setup and comfortable with the 22lr.

Thank you,

David

David,

Glad you enjoyed the event.

I have to say that while I have never used a laser to practice I assumed that there would be something available. I did a quick search on google and on the board here and only found a reference to the one you mentioned which is activated by sound.

That said, assuming you have a modern Ruger 10/22, there is no issue with dry firing and damaging the firing pin.

The Ruger FAQ states: All Ruger® rifles can be dry fired without damage, and dry firing can be useful to familiarize the owner with the firearm. However, be sure any firearm is completely unloaded before dry firing!

https://ruger.com/dataProcess/customerService/

The manual for your Ruger 10/22 will state the same.

Finally, there are some very knowledgeable folks on the board who might not have seen your question since it was in the After Action Report area.

You might want to navigate to the Gear and Reviews section of the Forum and repost your question there.

I'm sorry I'm so late to reply. I do not personally own a Ruger rifle. But I know most modern rimfires can be dry-fired safely, but it's something I still don't do.  I use Snap Caps or wall anchors from Home Depot to protect the chambers when doing dry fire practice.

And Merry Christmas!

I own 6 Ruger 10/22 rifles and it is absolutely okay to dry fire these rifles. With any other make of rimfire firearm I would use a snap cap unless the manual specifically says that dry firing is permitted.
