Rossi RS22 experience

Hey guys,

I had the pleasure of attending an Appleseed event last month, and want to return back to get my rifleman patch. Last Appleseed shoot, I used my 5.56 AR15, but want to use a 22 semi this time - this I still need to acquire. I've noticed the Rossi RS22 is a good bit cheaper than the oft-recommended ruger 10/22, and also gets good reviews. It also comes with built in sling studs which I consider a big plus for Appleseed. Have any people here had experience with them? Anybody used one or seen it on the line at Appleseed, with any notable reliability or accuracy issues?

From what I've seen, the biggest advantage the ruger would have is aftermarket support, but since the most id be modifying this rifle would be adding a sling and scope, I don't see that being a factor for me.

Thanks in advance.

Chico

I am very happy with my Rossi RS-22. It likes Norma TAC-22 and Aguila ammo. I put an Athlon scope on the top. Makes for a top notch Appleseed rifle. May not be as popular as the Ruger 10-22, but just as accurate . . . Maybe better.

One word of advice:  practice mag changes. Pushing the release button forward while pulling the magazine out takes a little practice. Always a good idea to practice

Also, the Rossi can use Mossberg Plinkster mags as both rifles are the same.

You can buy and shoot the Rossi with confidence

The Ruger 10-22 has become the defacto universal rifle for a number of reasons.  The manual of arms is familiar to most experienced shooters and easy to learn. Though there are many excellent rifles available, commonality is an advantage. One important advantage is the Ruger magazines.  They are easy to find about anywhere and are reasonably priced. Most important they are easy to load and reliable. Going thru 400-500 rounds during an Appleseed weekend tests a person's finger endurance and strength. Mag changes are quick and easy, especially with the advantage of an extended mag release.

After years of offering loaners to nearly two dozen new riflemen/women, the 10-22 has been completely reliable. And in the AR format, the Tippmann serves well.

Based on Chico's response I would suggest having no less than 6 magazines.  The cost of the 10/22 has risen a lot in the past year.  If you just want a rifle to shoot Rifleman ask about borrowing a rifle from the Shootboss or an instructor ahead of time.

Had a student pick one up the weekend before a shoot. He put a budget scope on it and showed up. He was in the high 190's all day. He upgraded scope and came to a 2nd event. He went 3 for 3 AQT with a Rifleman score. I was impressed by the little "budget rifle"

So what is Project Appleseed Business?  What would the Ghost of Project Appleseed say to us?

"Business!'" cried the Ghost of Project Appleseed, wringing its hands again.  "Liberty was my business; Heritage, History, Freedom, and Pursuit of Happiness, were, all, my business. The deals of Marksmanship were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!"

I have a Mossberg Plinkster 702, which is the same rifle made by the same Brazilian manufacturer. The Plinkster and RS22 have just slightly different sights and stock.

I also have a Savage 64, Marlin 795, and a couple Ruger 10/22's. Out of all these rifles, if I wanted an economical straight out of the box 22, I would pick the Plinkster or RS22.

My plinkster runs well with all ammo, the trigger is decent, and I am getting 2-1/2 MOA from a bench with Agulia Super Extra HP
I don't always shoot AQT's, but when I do, I prefer iron sights.

I got to try Jim's rifle at the last shoot and I like it.  Based on my Brazilian made Mossberg 801 Half-pint Plinkster the barrels are excellent.  Jim's rifle shot nice tight groups.

Next time I'm at a shoot with Jim we will try my Mossberg 802 bolt action mags.  This would delete the last round hold open which would actually help this rifle if they feed well.

Off topic the 801 is an excellent youth rifle that they stopped importing. It was $132 about 10 years ago.  If you find one in a shop consider picking it up for small youth shooters.

Just to clarify, my original post in this thread was for my Mossberg 702 plinkster. Since then, I bought the Rossi RS22 that Chuck is commenting about shooting. I am more than impressed with the Rossi. They are both made by CBC in Brazil and from what I can tell they are identical except for the stock and sights. That being said, I look online and see that the newer Mossberg 702 is now using the same sights as the Rossi.

During Black Friday, I couldn't resist the pull of the deal that Rural King was running and I scooped up a few.

After taxes, shipping, FFL fees and rebates, each rifle cost me $95.68.

I have some cheap glass laying around, and a couple of sets of Weaver-style rings (I thought I would NEVER use  ;D )

Looking forward to see how these play out!

I picked one up as well.  I'm pleased.  I'm getting 3 MOA with Agilla Super Extra bulk ammo.  Simmons 4x rimfire scope mounted with Weaver 3/8 rings.
