Maximize your Appleseed energy to make this program grow, and help fill the empty spots

Summerlike weather was in store for us at Project Appleseed's inaugural shoot at Alder Brook Sportsman's Association. Six shooters, including three very attentive and well-behaved young men, mustered for a fabulous weekend of marksmanship and history.  After the safety brief, we got down to shooting the redcoat target, and on to what must have seemed like a firehose of instruction:
-Slings
-positions
-6 steps of firing the shot
-NPOA
-trigger manipulation
-Inches Minutes and clicks
-Safe Transitions

During lunch, and interspersed throughout the afternoon (needed those breaks from the heat!) we heard the stirring history of the first Patriot's Day - April 19th, 1775, told in Three Strikes of the Match.  Who can forget the inspiring accomplishments of Paul Revere, Samuel Prescott, or Isaac Davis!

After lunch, we got to shoot AQTs, and the evening redcoat before the benediction and adjourning for the evening.  The sun and heat had worn us all down!

After practicing our prone positions in what must have been a sound night's sleep,  5 returning shooters, plus a 6th who made the day trip all the way from southern Massachusetts (!) shot the morning redcoat, more AQTs, a Ball and Dummy Drill, then heard stories of Dangerous Old Men (Samuel Whittemore is my personal favorite, who is yours?).

We broke down after lunch and our known Distance Lecture to apply what we learned at 100, 200, and 300 yards.  After seeing what our bullet drops are at 100, we applied corrections and got solid center hits on our D-targets.  We tried doing this at the other ranges, using information about our cartridges to apply the proper holdover, and, lo and behold, got hits on paper at 200 and 300 yards - yes this stuff really works!

Thank you to 300Berg / Brent, our newest Red Hat instructor and club liaison, who 1) built some awesome target stands with the Project Appleseed logo prominently displayed, and 2) brought his Brown Bess musket for all to see on Sunday - lending another piece of history to the event.  Also to NHAlan, who helped us out tremendously and earned a promotion to IIT1. Huzzah!

The three youth who attended were a joy to instruct, safe at all times and virtual "sponges" soaking up both the marksmanship and history portions.  You are the future!

Our shooter from Massachusetts made the trip worthwhile by scoring rifleman - with  a bolt gun!

A big shoutout to Alder Brook Sportsman's, who not only agreed to "try out" Project Appleseed, but who shut down the entire range all weekend for our exclusive benefit.  Excellent hosts, excellent facilities - thank you!

Project Appleseed hopes this is just the first of many more shoots at this fine club in the North Country.
