We had a great weekend at the Wolf Creek Sportsman's Club near Curtis, Ohio. Six shooters came to learn pistol marksmanship and listen to some of the early history of our Great Nation. The weather was a nice bonus; we enjoyed beautiful June days with moderate temperatures and a pleasant breeze.

The experience levels of the shooters ranged from very experienced to new beginners.  Deb C. (slowbutsure) cleared her first Red Coat Saturday morning and went on to clear three of the four shot during the weekend.

Steady hold factors including stance and grip were taught, along with the six steps of firing a shot and natural point of aim. With each layer of instruction the new shooters became more confident and the groups tightened.

Austin F. (Headhunter) earned his Pistoleer™ patch Saturday with his first PQT (Pistol Qualification Test) scoring a 230.  He re-qualified on Sunday with another score of 230.

Sunday morning we had a quick refresher course on all the information presented Saturday, and then moved into some steady hold factor drills. Next we posted talking targets and shot ten rounds into them. We evaluated the results and then using what the targets told us, we shot another ten rounds into them; nice improvements were seen. Then it was time for a couple of PQT targets.

After lunch on Sunday we had a fun shoot with a "Dueling Tree" reactive steel target. The shooting line was moved back to a little over thirty feet (the recommended safe distance) and two shooters tried to get their six inch steel targets to swing to the other shooter's side of the post. Twenty rounds were loaded, each shooter began with three targets, which changed as the competition began and hits were made.  Once all six targets were on one side we had a winner of that round. Then the next two shooters competed until everyone had a turn. The winners from the first rounds tested their skills against each other until we were down to the final round. Congratulations to the dueling tree champion, Doc Willi.

Sunday afternoon Deb C. (slowbutsure) earned her rank of Pistoleer™ by shooting a score of 226.  Mark was shooting well all weekend but was just short of the 210 points required; I'm sure he'll get his patch at the next shoot held there in August.

We had an awesome instructor crew of Doc Willi, Meadow and Third Degree who did an outstanding job presenting the information and offering plenty of advice and encouragement to everyone.

Special thanks go to Meadow for arranging the event and taking care of all the details, both big and little, which made it a pleasure to attend. A marvelous lunch was provided for everyone both days; it was worth the drive just for the food!

Third Degree

We had a great group of students that brought a spirit of learning to the line.

The beginner pistol shooters made steady progress and the training progressed. I believe they all will be return customers.

Congratulations to the patched Pistoleer™s (Deb and Austin)! And excellent job of clearing the Red Tombstones (Deb and Austin).

Mark, keep up the good work. You are almost there!

Meadow is my choice for event and menu planning. Excellence on both counts.

I look forward to returning for the August pistol clinic.
