Another great weekend was had at Hobbs Island Shooting range in South Huntsville. Saturday started with overcast skies and eager-to-start shooters. On the line for this Father’s Day weekend, we had two father-son groups and the son and daughter of an instructor. We started the day with the morning safety brief and a First Strike told by EddieB, and then we went to the line for the hits-count, Redcoat target. During the instruction that followed, a light rain began. At lunch, Willociraptor shared the Second Strike. We saw remarkable improvement in a short time, especially from our youth shooters. Ava, Owen, and Barret, you guys rocked!

As a fun addition to the holiday weekend, the Shoot Boss brought special prizes for those that did best on certain strings of fire. The first, for the best squares group, was claimed by Justin. Fine job, sir!

Later in the afternoon, we had an uninvited guest – tropical storm, Claudette.  The wind joined the increased rain and blew the pop-ups away from the line. Our persistent shooters elected to take down the pop-ups and persist in the drizzle. After the wind increased and continued to blow down our targets, we took a break to hear Major Tom give a rousing Third Strike in the rain.  With deteriorating conditions, our shoot boss made the call that it was time to recover our sopping gear and call it a day.  We may have been wet, but everyone left happy and eager for Sunday!

After an early end to Saturday, shooters arrived early to the range, ready to begin. After a morning review, we returned to the line for some practice of what we reviewed and continued with the instruction. Once more, we saw tremendous results across the line. At lunch, instructors told some Dangerous Old Men/Women stories and shared some Known Distance shooting instruction before returning to the line for some AQTs. The second prize for the best standing group was given to our youngest shooter, Barrett. Huzzah! In between AQTs, we shot a Star Target and awarded the third and final prize to Ava for having 4 out of 5 shots on the paper. Excellent job, Ava!

After another AQT, shooters and instructors had the opportunity to shoot an 80-year-old M1 Garand. One of our youngest shooters, Owen, had a blast firing the Rifleman’s rifle. Well done, sir! We closed the day with an inspiring Call to Action from Maximum Ordinate.

This Father’s Day weekend, though faced with a few bumps in the road, was a great event! All shooters had positive attitudes and were persistent through rain, wind, and Sunday’s heat. Thank you to all who attended and chose to spend your holiday weekend hearing the message of liberty and honing your marksmanship skills. We hope to see you on the line again soon!

Thank you so much to Don and Matt, who are always wonderful hosts at Hobbs Island Shooting Range.  We appreciate your support!
