I saw a passing reference to MilSeeds in the Appleseed TIPS FAQ. Since I'm the Base Marksmanship Coordinator for the Maryland Air National Guard Wing, I'm intrigued. Does Appleseed still support this program? What does it take to organize one? Any info is appreciated!

I've been encouraging Wing members to participate in Appleseeds, but anything we can do to increase proficiency would be amazing. It's pretty pathetic, but I haven't qualified on a military firearm since 2010...and I'm not unusual. Maybe explains why my 2.0 reached Rifleman before me  ;D

BA,

Short answer: Yes, few and far between.

Longer answer:

Just like any other Appleseed event, if you build it - we will come.  All we need is a safe place to shoot - unit brings people, rifles, and ammo - we'll provide the instruction.

It's been a few years to be sure; the last one I did was, IIRC, 2015 - a Navy unit about to go on deployment.

Lemme know if you would like to set something up, and we'll get it moving.  If you need help selling it to the unit CO, we could probably help there, too.

Catch-10-22

BA,
I was shoot boss at a private event at Annapolis for some Maryland National Guard guys that were deploying back in October (AAR here: https://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=59294.0) and had a Marine unit come to an event together a few years back. Because it is tough to do an event on base, use issue firearms, or for participants to bring their own firearms at times, we can use one of our host ranges and provide all the loaners required. So you really have a few different options - manage the on-base approach, set up a private event, or bring out a few inspired folks to an Appleseed as a group and let them spread the good word!

Military range time, generally speaking, can be hard to come by sometimes, depending on the demand signal to get soldiers/sailors/airmen/marines proficient.  Some military units rent range time from private ranges because of the overwhelming demand signal (BA would know better his exact situation as the Base Marksmanship Coordinator).  Push comes to shove, I know a few instructors here that have white or blue ID cards.

That sounds incredibly hopeful! If it's possible, I would like to plan a 1-day event for my Wing. I think I can commit 12-15 participants. Due to the range requirements, it will be .22 only. We can supply ammo, but our rifles are all old 40X bolt-action rifles, so loaners would be much appreciated.

I was able to book a 25m range at Gunpowder Military Reservation for 3 April, 17 April, and 12 May. Can we make one of those days work?

Edited to update range status

Bump - can't find the current post on this; is this event still happening (thought it was 12 May)?

Gah! Wish I could make this. The event Catch referred to in October was for my guys and we had a great time. BA, I hope this event goes well for you also. One day, we need to link up as it seems many of our interests and circles cross.
