The plain wood stock on my old Ruger 10/22 puts my eye too low for proper use of my scope. (Or possibly a future upgraded scope.) I'm using pipe insulation and duct tape as a cheek riser... lame!

I'd like an adjustable cheek pad such as I've seen on the Archangel Ruger 10/22 Precision Stock. Does the funky mag well on the AAP1022 cause issues with standard 10 round magazines? I've got plenty of 10 rounders and want to keep using them.

Also, if there's a better stock I'm missing please point it out. Honestly, I think the AAP1022 is a bit ugly... I'm just attracted to the dial adjustable cheek pad.

Thanks in advance for info.

The Boyd's at-one stock might be just what I was looking for! A bit more expensive but sure looks pretty. I'm a n00b so I've never had the chance to use a thumb hole stock. Is there any disadvantage to going thumbhole for Appleseed purposes?

I got the version without the thumb hole.
Some people like them, some people dont. I dont.

I run an Archangel on my AS gun it works really well. I added a small block of wood below the trigger gard to move my hand down and keep my trigger finger from dragging the stock.
I have come here to chew gum and teach riflemen the art of shooting one hole groups and I'm all out of bubblegum.

Or just use Buttler Creek Steel 10rounders.

Welcome to the trail Tinfoilhat!

I've been at this a long time and I still have foam and vet wrap on my rifles. (there are multiple loaner rifles and custom stocks I've made for my children) You can build the stock up with finishing nails and wood filler to get the comb perfectly where you need it.  The are also various cheek pieces that can be used.

A lot of the thumb holes are not located well.  I have seen a few that were but don't remember wich brand.

Once you have the comb height where you need it for that scope it won't need changed again unless you change the optic so adjustability is of limited use.

Ask to try others stocks while at the range and get what fits and works well.  Don't just throw money at it without trying things out first.  This sucks up a lot of time and money. (and ammo)

Make sure you don't need a proprietary mag to go with the new stock.  The Ruger 10 round mags are affordable, available and they WORK.

I'm not saying "don't spend money on your rifle". I am saying "spend money on things you know will improve your rifle's fit and spend TIME on learning the SKILLS.

Hope to see you on the trail.

I have decided to order a Boyd's at-one stock. I'm not gonna' lie, part of my decision was that they're pretty. I'd sorta' like a thumbhole just because I've never used one. But nobody is telling me they're super awesome so I'll stick with "regular".

The stock was my first decision. I've decided to do a full "build". I had mechanical issues galore in two different Appleseeds and I think I was asking too much of a beat up old farmgun. (The gun could just barely do the job and I'm not skilled enough for just barely. I want to remove as many uncertainties as possible.)

So, here's the next question. I must choose the right barrel option when I order the stock. I've got a regular barrel. I can re-use it. It's 20+ years old and not particularly accurate. I assume upgrading to a thicker barrel (maybe flouted) would make me a little more accurate.

What would y'all recommend for a new barrel? I've seen a million brands, lengths, twist rates, etc... It's all Greek to me. Lets say the barrel budget is under $200 and $150 would be better. I'll order the barrel and stock at the same time.

Prize goes to the first person who can recommend a barrel that's in stock right now, and available for online order.

Also, I figure this is me dropping a couple hundred bucks to gain an MOA-ish of accuracy? Is that unreasonable expectations?

I have a kidd fluted heavy barrel, 18". I love it. Using cci  blazer it will one hole them at 25m.
Little bit on the higher side, but a good one.
I highly recommend trigger work. Either brimstone, volquartsen parts, Kidd, etc. a good trigger is well worth it.
Then again, I dropped a lot of cash into my build. But it sure is sweet!
By the way, what color did you end with? I did blue, with my stainless rifle

I also have a Kidd trigger in my personal 22, but I can also highly recommend the Ruger BX-Triggerl Has to be the best 10-22 trigger for the money. Pretty consistent 4lb pull and you can find them under $60 in more normal times (right now they're $80 and out of stock  :(. You can order with Optics Planet with an estimated 7-14 day shipping). Will definitely get you to distinguished scores if you do your part and it's stock Ruger, so drops right in. Also leaves you with a spare trigger assembly for your "demo" rifle if you are instructing.

i have a Magpul x-22 stock and Ruger bx trigger in mine. i really like the Magpul for the amount of LOP and comb adjustment there is available.

The Green Mountain heavy tapered barrel is a tack driver and usually affordable but haven't looked for one in a while.  With a tighter chambered barrel usually comes live ammo extracting issues, example you don't get all your shots off in stage 2-3.

I strongly recommend setting up a dummy stack and sling and practicing your positions and getting and moving your NPOA.  Success on the AQT is good shots off in about 10 seconds in the transition stages and getting as close as possible to a clean first and fourth stage.

TinfoilHat,
The Archangel stock for the 10/22 is ideal for Appleseed, especially if with multiple users.  Mine is loaner that has at least eleven new rifleman using it over the last few years.  To make it as versatile as possible, the scope is mounted with UTG QD rings on a Dlask pic rail that allows quick adjustment of the scope position.  Also to keep weight down, an aluminum barrel from Whistlepig GunBarrels is used.  Weight is about seven pounds, but much lighter than steel bull barrel with laminate stock.  With this adjustability, this rifle has fit 10 yr old, petite ladies, and six footers.  Auto bolt release  and under trigger mag release makes the learning experience a little less complicated for new shooters.
Some fitting of the stock was required. Initially, the mags wouldn't drop free and required some filing of the mag area of the stock. The receiver fit is very tight--no bedding required.  Some minor fitting also needed on most of the Boyd's stocks I've used.
For an inexpensive comb height adjustment, Titan Universal CheekRest Kit works great.  Works on most Ruger stocks.  I'm using on Ruger PCC with horse wrap and it works fine with a spacer or two.
Hope this gives you some more options.
