Marlin 60 as LTR?

Hi all,

I've got a Marlin 60 with added sling-swivels and a sling. I tried to use it at an Appleseed with a rigged-up sling, but with poor results, so I ended using my SKS instead (costing a pretty penny in ammo).

I'm going to another Appleseed soon, and I want to know how the use of a tube magazine can be handled during courses of fire that require a mag-change.

In light of this dilemma, I am strongly considering selling the Marlin and buying a 10/22 (or similar) that uses detachable magazines. I also want to sell my rifle to family, family that might want to attend an Appleseed. Should I encourage them to buy this rifle - because it is a good gun in general - or should I sell it to someone who I have not personally encouraged to go to Appleseed?

Thanks in advance :)

Nickle

The Instructors at an Appleseed know how to accomodate that tube fed .22.

Now, my thinking is to keep the Marlin 60, and buy a 10/22 (or comparable Marlin) as well, and use one for a loaner to family and friends.
They have men amongst them who know very well what they are about, having been employed as Rangers against the Indians and Canadians and this country being much covered with wood, and hilly, is very advantageous for their method of fighting. . . . ".  Lord Percy

My Marlin 60 is my new LTR.  I put a set of tech sights on it.  As for sling. I used an Uncle Mike's Machine Screw Type Sling  http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=181431.  I drilled a hole under neath the tube mag for the post of the sling screw.  Then I drilled a large hole on the inside of the stock for the machine screw bolt to sit in.  I put epoxy around the bolt to hold it inplace and to reinforce it since there is now very little wood.  Then I screwed the machine screw type sling stud in and ground it off with an angle grinder flush with the wood. I used epoxy on the threads to anchor it in place, but I also peened the center of the screw in the bolt just to make sure it wouldn't go anywhere.

I have been using McDonald's straws as speedloaders for tube fed mags.  Tape one end and angle the other.  Load up with 5 or six rounds and with a little practice, you can load a tube feed at the loading port.

The straw idea is fantastic! Thanks Duane. :)

I've got the Uncle Mike's swivels in mine as well, though not as fancily as you have. So far they hold steady, though.

That will be one cent for each straw you use.  I patented the idea.  ;D

Mcdonalds straw as a speed loader for tubefeds? :o  this adds lots to the concept of a "happy meal"  :)
Thanx Duane.

I have a couple of Marlin 60s which I carry for loaners, as well as my 10/22s. Yesterday I whipped up some "speed loaders" for the Marlins. I bought some arrow shafts, Mossy Oak 2512, XX78 ultralites and cut them into approximately 15 inch lengths with a metal cutting chop saw. Then I cut about a half-inch off the base of a 308 casing with a hacksaw. A piece of leather was wrapped around the case to protect it from the vise. It isn't too difficult to cut if you rotate the case when the hacksaw cuts through the brass. Otherwise the hacksaw blade will freeze up in the brass as you try to saw. After cleaning up all the cuts with a file on the outside and a chainsaw blade on the inside, the arrow shaft will fit perfectly in the body of the casing and the neck of the case will fit perfectly in the tube of the Marlin. It seems to be the ideal way to prep the tube of a tube-fed rifle. I constructed six of them and plan to carry them with me to ASs to loan out to speed up the tube-feds on the line.

I made up a dozen of these but couldn't get the (very cheap) tape to stick well.  So I made some wooden plugs by tapering a 5/16" dowell with a drill-powered sanding disk then cutting the tapered sections off with a hack saw and securing them in the end of the straw with a dab of hot glue.

Naturally, the first AS I brought them too had no tube-fed rifles (a first!), but I did have one happy user this last weekend.  They work very well for 22 long rifle ammo, but I couldn't get them to work with 22 mag ammo.  Bummer.

Many thanks to you, DuaneRN, for promoting the straw-reloaders.  They make life much easier for Marlin 60 users and the Line Bosses where they're shooting.

Of course at my last AS I didn't bring any.

On the M60's use a "T" nut instead of the countersunk nut provided with teh machine screw swivels.
It lets you leave the wood at full thickness.

Get them at the hardware store for 10 cents a piece.

DuaneRN

Thanks Sam.  Should've thought of that.

The straw speed loaders worked well at the Ramseur AS this past weekend.  The first day I got one guy to try it, but the taped down end had too much taper and the last bullet got stuck.  The next day, I pinched the two tapered end together and they worked flawlessly.  One first time shooter had little difficulty using them.  Then only prob she had, was when she stuck them in her pocket and sat down with them.  They sped up my end of the line.  I did find some Hardee's straws that will hold 11 rounds and will use these at my next AS.

I really like Marlin .22s and I'm proabably like everybody else I have several M 60s, I got tired of the tube feed thing in a hurry for an LTR and went to E gunparts.com to look around as I know that most of the Marlin internals interchange so I bought the side plates for a magazine fed Marlin a mag release and the bottom metal yanked the tube and fit the assembly into the rifle, way cool now and since I prefer a little heavier rifle I added a steel rod where the old tube went, epoxied it in and drilled and tapped it for a sling swivel stud, grand total about 50 FRNs now with TEC Sights stepping up to the plate again I will add some of them for a great LTR without the stupid Ruger bolt release issue, the ridiculous mag release thing and of course the never quite reliable rotary magizine. Marlin rifles fit me a little better and I am more partial to them , so if you want to do the conversion it is not to difficult to do and you get to save some bucks to spend on ammo or gas to go Appleseeding.

Can you post the links to the E gun parts stuff you bought? and maybe some pics as well of the completed item?

One thing Ive learned with the marlin is that recoil buffer is very important even if it is still in one piece its properties change with age and use. Had one get brittle on my 795 and was having a ton of minor issues. At the advice of a smith I did a take down and replaced it. Suddenly it was shooting better than new. Added one to my parts bin for that yearly take down I will be doing on this rifle from now on.

If converting to box mag feed....the complete action (70PSS; 995SS - last shot bolt hold-open) is $49.95 http://www.e-gunparts.com/product.asp?chrProductSKU=720020

A box mag stock with trigger guard completes the conversion (appears to be entire trigger group) http://www.e-gunparts.com/DisplayAd.asp?chrProductSKU=981320&chrSuperSKU=&MC=

I chose this route to avoid modifications to my eldest son's Marlin #600 that is modestly collectible, an added advantage is that the complete action is about equal in cost to the few parts needed to convert; less trouble too! ;)

For the 795 LTR....I thought I'd swap in a used #60 barrel to extend the sight radius and see how that works out. http://www.e-gunparts.com/DisplayAd.asp?chrProductSKU=453740&chrSuperSKU=&MC=

Still waiting on the parts though, and I'll need more mags.  8)

The Appleseed Method: If it's Appleseed, and it works for you - STEAL IT! O0

The problem I've found for "long barreled assault Marlins' (my modified 795) is that although the barrel cross pin setback from the receiver face is about perfect on the used Glenfield 60 barrel I used from GPC, the front sight screw hole is 2 to 2½° too far left to be very useful. Time to fill the old hole and cut the new one.  %)
