Using wax coated 22LR ammo

Question Mark Mike

So this Friday I tried a couple boxes of Armscor 22LR ammo in my Ruger Mark II  and found that they were waxed coat at the range. Thinking that the wax made no difference, I shot through both boxes and had a few failures to feed. The rounds barely moved forward in the magazine, and I wonder if the wax coating had something to do with that. Fortunately, racking the slide back was enough to chamber those three stoppages.

But I have to wonder if that type of ammo is not ideal for timed strings of fire, like those at an appleseed course. Does that wax coating cause malfunctions? Thanks!

Wax  does foul magazines.
10-22s are particularly vulnerable. Black mags in the sun, and blowing dirt all add to the problem.

We learned this the hard way during an RBC at Ramseur in March 2017!!!  After trying as many different types of .22 ammo, we've finally settled on CCI 956.  We haven't had a misfeed or any problems with this ammo.

I have shot cases of CCI standard, wax coated, with no problems. I did have a few bricks that were overwaxed and would not chamber. They would not even fall out of the little plastic tray of a 50 rd box. CCI replaced them.
I have never even cleaned a Ruger mag yet.

CCI standard is wax coated? I did not know that. Then again, I've rarely shot any CCI 22LR ammo in a  while.

CCI is my go to ammo.  Blazer is cheaper but Standard Velicity is slightly more accurate, Minimags are clean always go bang and cycle most semi-autos without problem but are more expensive.

Armscor is really dirty and I had a terrible reliability problems with it at a Boy Scout event.  It had a lot of misfires.  I'm not a fan of most Remington and Winchester ammo either.  I suggest finding what your gun likes and buying a case.  It is much cheaper that way and you usually get all ammo from the same lot this way and get more consistent performance.
Last evening, it occurred to me that when a defender of Liberty is called home, their load lands upon the shoulders of the defenders left behind. Just as the Founders did their duty for Liberty, every subsequent generation must continue their work lest Liberty perish. As there is no way for the remaining adults to take on the work of those that die, we must pass the ideals and duties on to the children. -PHenery
