Moved from IAAR's for hotairbill:

An Appleseed  event was held at the Roswell Gun Club and was enthusiastically attended by nine shooters and seven highly skilled and trained instructors and staff.  OLAdcock was DSB for the event and it was hotairbill's third stab at being an SBIT.  The event was blessed with an incredibly talented, out-of-state, visiting instructor, backtrack9, from Texas.  The rest of the crew consisted of RJMouse, ArchieL, Marine1775, and another visiting IIT, from Florida, KawGirl, who entertained all of us with her rendition of the National Anthem, played on her fife, both days.

We had nine enthusiastic and attentive students ranging in age from 13 years to 72 years old.  One of whom, Michael, was revisiting the Appleseed experience, after scoring Rifleman at the Whittington Center, this past summer.  He was succesful, as he shot a 221, after receiving additional expert instruction from the Roswell crew. He was, however, the only Rifleman of the weekend.  We had two dedicated shooters knocking on the door of Rifleman several times shooting above 200, but not quite breaking that illusive 210 mark. They will be back!

As usual, the fall weather in Roswell was challenging, with Saturday being very windy and a bit cold.  Sunday was still breezy and only a little warmer.  I have had the pleasure of instructing at the Roswell Gun Club while it snowed.  So we carried on and counted our blessings.  The only other challenge at this facility is sharing the outhouses with the spiders, as they are a bit territorial.  However, the cold slowed them down enough that no close encounters were noted.

Saturday all nine shooters, showed great improvement on the redcoat excercises, starting in the morning, 3 shooters hit the 100 yard redcoat, 1 hit the 200 yard redcoat, 1 hit the 300 yard redcoat and no hits on the 400 yard and 1 hit the Morgan square.  The afternoon redcoat target, however, was a significant improvement.  5 hit the 100 yard redcoat, 1 hit the 200 yard redcoat, 2 hit the 300 yard redcoat, 1 hit the 400 yard redcoat and 4 hit the Murphy shingle. Only one student got the bayonet! This improvement was directly attributable to the high quality of instruction tendered by the the instructors and the "teachable attitude" that the students continually demonstrated during the two days of instruction.

Sunday started with the change in daylight savings time which affected the arrival time of two of the staff ( yup, they were late).  But, it allowed us to start setting the range in daylight! One Saturday shooter could not return as they had church commitments.  However, backtrack9's uncle Charlie was invited to participate, after he observed all day Saturday, and he brought out his early 1900s, Winchester 52 and proceeded to have a taste of running a bolt gun during Sunday's AAQTs.  He gave it a try for a couple hours and graciously bowed out with a vow to return and be better prepared, both physically and firearm-wise.  At mid day, three shooters and backtrack9 had to leave early due to lengthy trips home and work commitments on Monday.  The final five shooters continued to march enduring the grind of repeated Sunday afternoon AAQTs.  As Michael had fired a Rifleman score in the morning and had to leave early, the final five, in spite of their best efforts, were not successful in achieving their own Rifleman badge.  Yet they persevered and did not give up, firing until the bitter end.  They all stated that they had a great time and vowed to return for another session to achieve the Rifleman score.  And as a post script, yes, hotairbill, fulfilled his four year quest to earn a green hat, with the ultimate goal of bringing the Appleseed project back to Alamogordo N.M.  Look out Alamogordo!!!

Congratulations Alamogordo New Mexico and hotair Bill on achieving the Appleseed pay grade of Shoot Boss.
It sounds like the Roswell event was a lot of fun. Having Appleseed events in Alamogordo, New Mexico again should be a boon for Appleseed.
Here's wishing all, happy, safe, fun Appleseeding trails, :F

Really enjoyed your AAR!
Roswell has a special place in my heart, having lived there from 8th through 10th grades while my dad was stationed at the Air Base.
Did a lot of hunting there, got my first motorcycle while there....and on and on.
Maybe I'll have a chance to come help out at an event some time in the future.

Congratulations, Bill!

Sounds like you guys had a blast...maybe I can play next year, too.

Thank you to all you all.  Short term goal achieved with support of many.  You know who you are.  Next, we get the project going in Alamogordo, NM.

If anyone. can polnt me towards information and forms that will allow a presentation to the local range, I would be in your debt.  The new head range officer wants some facts and figures, insurance, releases, and other politically correct information, to help make up his mind.  Thanks in advance.  Bill B
