What an oven!! It was nothing, if not hot and humid.

An enthusiastic group of students showed up on Saturday morning for the first event held at Urbandale Gun Club. Mid-70s temperatures quickly rose through the 80s and into the 90s, with humidity to match.

After covering the basics of Steady-Hold Factors, the Six Steps to Firing the Shot, NPOA and a few other items, we got in not only the introduction (Green) AQT, but also completed a timed one as well, before the heat forced us to give up for the afternoon. Working in a few breaks for history helped a bit, but it was still a scorcher.

Sunday had promised some relief to the heat, but the weatherman was, of course, wrong. Who else could be wrong so many times, and still be employed?      :wb:   Oh well...

After a review of safety, as well as the foundational points that we had learned on Saturday, we were off and running, chasing the elusive Rifleman score. By the end of the weekend, even with the weather, we had one new Rifleman, one re-qualification, and an instructor who re-qualified with a bolt-action 223.

The instructor crew received a very nice return on their time invested, as shown by the Redcoat scores for the weekend. Saturday morning had 4 scoring at 100 yards, 1 at 200, 3 at 300, 1 at 400 and 2 joining Daniel Morgan's group of sharpshooters. Unfortunately, no one was able to put it all together and clear the entire target. But, isn't that what Appleseed is all about? Sharing the information that can help so many to improve from when they arrived?

Well, this team showed how much they had learned. On Sunday, scores improved to 6 at 100, 6 at 200, 4 at 300, 3 at 400, 3 joined Mr. Morgan, and 3 cleared the whole thing. What an improvement.

In order to try to get some relief from the heat, and a break in the routine, we split into two teams, and took some shots at a 100-yard target. Each shooter had the opportunity to take three shots, and when it was over, one team had done very well, earning the seldom-seen Appleseed sticker. However, the second team shot a perfect score, every round in the five area, earning the coveted Appleseed cell-phone holder (sometimes called a coozie, which also holds a can of cold beverage very nicely).

A special thanks goes out to John, who closed down his pistol range for the entire weekend so that we could hold our event. Thanks too, to CrazyDuckHunter and GMJoe, who transported the target stands and other materials so that we could provide a first-class venue. They also arrived early and ensured that the range was ready, even whacking a few weeds and picking up and moving a lot of stray material that would have been in the way.

Lastly, thanks to all of the shooters who stuck it out through the heat and humidity so that they could improve on their marksmanship skills and learn a little history. And thanks to Charlie, who exhibited an amazing level of attention to both the instruction and history through the entire weekend. Remember the formula for calculating distance (from the KD discussion) and give it a try sometime. You might be amazed.

For those of you that qualified or cleared the Redcoat, congrats!! For the rest of the team, come on back (and bring a friend or family member). From the shot group sizes, I see amazing things in your futures.  :snipersmi

A future Rifleman, and the most recent recipient of the William Diamond patch. Keep up the hard work, it will pay off.

Did TexasT mention that it was hot, hazy and humid? Everyone drank plenty of water and we all made it through the weekend in good shape.

A big thanks to the owners of Urbandale Gun Club, John & Candice for hosting us on their range. The root beer float at the end of the day on Saturday was a great treat! Thank you and we hope that you will host another event in the future.

A great group of people to spend an awesome weekend with. I took the opportunity to shoot on Sunday morning with the group and I had a great time doing so. I cannot remember the last time that I shot a AQT with a group like this. Being able to re-qualify using a center fire bolt action was very challenging but a lot of fun. I thank the shoot boss and the other IIT's for covering the line while I did so.

The paycheck at the end of the weekend was definitely the red coat score improvement. Just incredible.

Let's do this again and soon!!
